Surrounded by the world’s most high-tech fruit packing warehouses, Washington Fruit & Produce Co. headquarters is conceived as an oasis amidst a sea of concrete and low-lying brush landscape. Tucked behind landforms and site walls, this courtyard-focused office complex provides a refuge from the noise and activity of the industrial processing yards nearby.

The project is located on flat, river-bed industrial land bordered by a major freeway. The fruit processing facilities that dominate the area are concrete tilt-up boxes, surrounded by acres of pavement, trucks and refrigeration equipment. Company leaders desired a new/headquarters that would serve as a refuge from the industrial agribusiness landscape. They asked for warmer materials, little to no concrete, non-boxlike forms, protection from the freeway, and minimal visible equipment or devices. Light and acoustics were high priorities.

Taking its design cue from an aging barn that the client had identified as a favorite, the concept seeks to capture the essence of an utilitarian agricultural aesthetic. A simple exposed structure that employs a limited material palette and natural patina, the design merges rural vernacular with an equally spare contemporary aesthetic.

The L-shaped building is nested into the landscape through the use of board-formed concrete site walls and earthen berms that wrap the perimeter to form a central, landscaped courtyard. Soil excavated for foundation work was repurposed for the perimeter berms, eliminating the need to remove it or add more.

Crossing the courtyard via a boardwalk, the visitor is embraced by a fully-glazed facade, punctuated by a series of wood columns that march across the building in regular intervals. The boardwalk aligns with an off-set building entry.

The building recalls its agricultural roots by pulling the 5m scissored glu-lam structural columns to the outside, revealing the physics of its construction and enabling the 50m interior volume to be column free. Topped with 20m exposed truss girders, the interior reaches 6m at its peak. The repetitive nature of the structure ensured easy fabrication and assembly, saving costs and resources. The north-facing courtyard facade is glazed along its length, visually extending the interior space into the courtyard. Interior light is balanced via a long clerestory dormer on the south, while the extensive use of large, south-facing overhangs and high efficiency glazing limits summer heat gain. Reclaimed barn wood siding and a weathering steel roof round out the exterior materials.

Spartan, daylight-filled interiors are complemented by a warm, simple palette of natural materials. Interior furnishings terminate well below the ceiling. The open feeling of the structure is reinforced by keeping furnishings low and allowing them to float within the space. Lighting consists of custom-designed uplights, which keep the ceiling plane tidy. A raised flooring system further ensures that the clean aesthetic is preserved and free of cabling. The deep agricultural roots of both the company and location underlie the simple design concept and attention to detail throughout the project.

The sales office is located in the short arm of the L to isolate noise and enhance privacy. Adjacent to the sales office is a separately-enclosed structure featuring a 9m table where farmers with whom the company works gather for communal meals. The exposed structural system connecting the lunch room to the main building creates a small, partially covered courtyard, nodding to a remnant of an aging barn.

자연 속 워싱턴 과일 회사의 신사옥

미국의 야키마 지역은 좋은 토양과 맑은 날씨로 많은 과수원과 과일 포장, 냉동, 가공 시설들이 자리잡은 곳이다. 이러한 야키마에 새롭게 들어선 워싱턴 과일 회사의 신 사옥은 세계 제일의 첨단 장비의 과일 포장 창고와 함께 지어졌다. 지형과 벽 뒤에 숨어있는 이 복합 업무상업 시설은 야키마 일대의 산업시설로부터 오는 소음에서 벗어나 피난처를 제공한다.

사옥은 고속도로와 접해 있는 평평한 강바닥 공업용지에 위치해 있다. 클라이언트 측은 따뜻한 자연의 재료를 사용하고 박스가 아닌 형태와 인접한 고속도로로부터 보호를 요청했다. 또한, 설비와 장치들이 눈에 띄지 않도록 요청했으며, 공간의 섬세한 빛(채광)과 음향도 당부했다. 전체적인 콘셉트는 클라이언트가 가장 좋아하는 낡은 헛간에서 영감을 얻어 디자인됐으며, 실용주의 농업 미학의 본질을 담아낸다. 한정된 재료 구성과 자연의 색이 특징이며, 간결한 구조와, 구조체의 노출은 농촌 주택 양식과 현대의 건축적 디자인을 고르게 혼합한다.

건물은 L자형으로 대지에 배치됐으며, 송판무늬콘크리트와 대지 경계를 둘러싸는 토벽이 풍경 속으로 스며드는 것처럼 보여준다. 경계부 토벽은 기초 공사 단계에서 파낸 흙을 재활용해 만들어 진 것이다. 토벽을 통과하는 통로는 주차장에서 중정과 건물 입구로 가는 접근로다. 판자길을 통해 중정을 통과한 방문객은 전면이 유리인 건물 입면에 둘러싸이게 되고, 입면의 나무 기둥들은 일정한 간격으로 세워져 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. X자의 서로 엇갈려 놓은 5m 높이의 구조용 기둥은 밖으로 노출되어 이 곳이 농업 관련 시설임을 상기시켜주는데, 50m에 달하는 내부 공간을 기둥없이 지탱할 수 있도록 만들어진 것이다. 내부 공간은 가장 높은 곳의 층고가 6m에 이르며, 반복되는 구조는 제작과 시공을 간편하게 만들어, 비용과 자원을 절약해준다. 중정에 접한 북향 입면은 긴 면을 유리로 마감해 시각적으로 내부가 마당을 향해 확장되도록 했다. 실내 조명은 남측에 긴 지붕창을 설치해 균형을 잡았고, 여름 일사 흡수를 제한하기 위해 남향을 향한 돌출 구조와 고효율 유리를 사용했다. 소박하면서 채광이 잘 되는 내부는 따뜻하고 간결한 자연 소재들로 매력을 더했다. 개인 사무실은 남측 벽을 따라 늘어서 있고, 회의실과 창고는 목재로 마감된 별도 공간에 들어서 있다. 구조의 개방감은 가구를 낮게 설치하고 공간을 부유하도록 한 덕에 더욱 도드라진다.

영업부 사무실은 L자 형태의 짧게 튀어나온 부분에 자리해 있어 소음에서 자유롭고, 뛰어난 사생활 보호 환경을 제공해준다. 사무공간 근처에는 독립적 형태의 구조물이 있는데, 회사의 협력 농부들이 모여 함께 식사를 하는 9m 길이의 탁자가 설치되어 있다. 구내 식당과 주건물을 연결한 노출 구조는 가림막이 있는 작은 중정을 형성해주면서, 과거의 오래된 헛간의 모습을 떠올리게 만든다.
