Stay_soar is a multiplex housing around Yangjaecheon Cafe Street. Within a volume a total of 13 units were arranged including 12 residential units and a neighborhood facility on the first floor. This was possible since the area of the typical floor’s common use space was minimized by using a skip floor form. A lot of effort was made to show the skip floor structure to the outside with the outline of the mass and the placement of windows.

The movement of the boundary, where the upper floors wrapped in a white shell and the lower floors with the exposed framework meet, is an essential factor that determines the impression of the building, and this too was the result of moving along the composition of the building. Since the majority of the exterior walls, including the oblique wall, were finished with white stucco, it was important to have countermeasures against contamination.

The construction was completed by employing details that are not generally used, and the prolonged duration of fine dust as well as the rainy season allowed sufficient examination on the actual performance of the finish. The fourth and fifth floor stairs squeeze out of the middle of the white shell and were finished with exposed concrete like the lower floors. The floor of the stairs and hall was finished using a resin bound surfacing system.

A slip-resistant landscaping paver was selected since the staircase was located on the outside. The flow of the circulation is read through the figure of the yellow stairs crossing between the achromatic mass. We tried to create the stair hall into a small living room as well as a yard, where the wind and light permeate into, rather than a passage that must be overcome and sped through. Since security is important as it is a multi-unit dwelling, a lock was separately installed on the front entrance of the building along with the front doors of each household.

Security is naturally being fulfilled through the use of the first floor’s structures without a fence. The balance of openness and security required for the first floor was found as it was finished with wires and a see-through gate. The arrangement of the bathroom, utility room, furniture, electrical outlets, etc. was elaborately refined to be able to house various lifestyles even if the area of each unit is small, and individuality was also obtained by slightly differing the position of windows in each unit.

Unit 402 shows how the skip floor structure was internally realized. As unit 501, which is connected to the attic, has the largest sense of space among others, it is used as the master bedroom cluster of the owner’s household. Units 502, 202 and 203 acquired more widespread openings than other units by installing windows across the corners. The rest of the units with ordinary windows instead have more storage space and larger walls. Tenants will be able to shop for units according to their taste between windows and storage, openness and coziness.

In order for a building to be constructed properly, the professionals involved must do their jobs the right way. As for stay_soar, although we cannot say for certainty whether there job of the architect was done the right way, it is unquestionable that the constructors did a remarkable job. They understood the desires of the floor plan more than the designer. The undetermined details were mostly completed by the constructors, and they even suitably filled in the gaps from time to time. As an architect, it was the most relieving and reassuring process.

양재천 소슬집

소슬집은 양재천 카페거리 인근에 있는 다세대주택이다. 주거 12세대와 1층의 근린생활시설까지 총 13개 유닛이 배치됐다. 스킵플로어 형식을 활용해 기준층의 공용면적을 최소화한 덕에 가능했다. 매스의 윤곽과 창문의 배치를 통해 스킵플로어 구조를 바깥으로 드러내는 데 힘썼다. 백색의 껍질로 감싼 상층부와 골조가 드러난 저층부가 만나는 경계의 움직임은 건물의 인상을 결정짓는 중요한 요소인데, 이 역시 스킵플로어라는 건물 구성을 따라 움직인 결과물이다. 경사진 벽을 포함한 외벽 대부분이 백색 스터코로 마감되었기 때문에 오염에 대한 대책이 중요했다. 흔히 사용하지 않는 디테일까지 동원해 시공을 마쳤고, 미세먼지와 장마가 연달아 이어진 공사기간 덕에 마감의 실제 성능에 대한 충분한 점검이 가능했다.

4층과 5층 계단은 백색의 껍질 중간을 비집고 나와 저층부와 같은 노출콘크리트로 마감됐다. 계단과 복도의 바닥은 베이지 색의 콩자갈수지포장이다. 계단실이 외부라 미끄럽지 않은 조경 포장재를 선택했다. 무채색의 매스 사이로 노란 계단이 넘나드는 모습을 통해 동선의 흐름이 읽힌다. 우리는 계단실을 극복하고 얼른 지나야 하는 통로가 아닌 바람과 빛이 스며드는 작은 거실이자 마당으로 만들려 했다. 공동주택인 만큼 보안도 중요하니 세대 현관문과는 별도로 건물 출입구에도 시건장치를 달았다. 담장 없이 1층의 구조물들을 활용하여 자연스럽게 보안이 이뤄지고 있다. 와이어와 투시형 대문으로 마무리해 1층에 필요한 개방과 보안의 균형을 찾았다.

개별 세대의 면적이 작더라도 여러 가지 생활상을 담을 수 있도록 화장실과 다용도실, 가구와 콘센트 등의 배치를 세밀하게 다듬었고 세대마다 조금씩 다른 창문의 위치에 반응하여 개별성도 확보됐다. 402호는 스킵플로어 구조를 내부에서 실현한 경우에 해당한다. 다락과 연결되는 501호는 세대 중 가장 큰 공간감을 가지고 있어 주인세대의 안방 클러스터로 사용된다. 502호와 202호, 203호는 모서리를 가로지르는 창을 뚫어 다른 세대보다 조금 더 시원한 개구부를 가지게 됐다. 보통의 창을 가진 나머지 세대는 대신 더 큰 수납공간과 벽면을 가진다. 창문과 수납, 개방성과 아늑함 사이에서 임차인은 취향 따라 세대를 쇼핑할 것이다.

하나의 건물이 옳게 지어지기 위해서는 관련된 전문가들이 각자의 일을 옳게 처리하면 된다. 소슬집의 경우 건축가가 옳게 굴었는지 우리로서는 판단할 수 없지만, 시공자가 올발랐던 것만은 분명하다. 도면이 원하는 바를 설계자보다 깊게 이해했다. 미정이었던 상세는 대부분 시공자에 의해 완성됐고 때로는 빈 부분을 적절히 채워주기도 했다. 건축가로서 더 없이 안심되고 든든한 과정이었다.
