ASYMMETRIC DUPLEX HOUSE, CHANGWON

There is no reason why duplex house should have symmetric dual plans except the purpose of cost reduction. Different household, different plans. Moreover, in this case, the client aims at rental income from the other half of the house. The owner’s house needs not to be the same with tenant’s. While the design of rental part was the general solution for anonymous ordinary people, the other part of the owner was designed as a particular solution in detail for the presence of his family: young parents and their 5 year old son.

Another asymmetric condition is the site. The site area is relatively small and its shape is trapejoid with strict regulation by building codes. Restricted condition resulted in sliding each half to fit the plan in to tight building lines. Interior strategy compensating for the spatial stuffiness was sky-lit void space from ceiling to bottom inbetween the 5 skipped floor levels. Perceptual volume of space depends not on the numerical size of gross area, but on the amount of spots with different characters, visional and behavioral relations among them, and also the experiences of subtle pleasures they will release for a long time: intimate terrace on the 2nd floor with hammock surrounded by tall walls, laundry duct connecting the dress room and utility just below it, climbing wall from the kids’ room to the attic, and so on.

창원 닮은 두 집

2가구 주택의 양쪽이 똑같은 평면을 가져야 할 이유는 공사비 절감의 목적 외에는 어디에도 없다. 서로 다른 사람들이 사는 집이라면 서로 다른 평면을 갖는 것이 더 자연스럽다. 게다가 이 집처럼 2가구 주택의 반쪽을 임대하려는 경우라면 더더욱 그러하다. 임차인의 주거가 임대인의 그것과 똑같아야 할 필요는 없을뿐더러 임대 가구의 경우 거주자를 특정할 수 없으므로 익명의 보통 사람들을 위한 일반해로 디자인되는 것이 합당하다. 반면에 건축주 가족이 거주하게 될 반쪽은 젊은 부부와 다섯 살 아들로 이루어진 실존 가족만을 위한 특수해로서 세밀하게 디자인되었다.

두 집이 대칭을 벗어나야 했던 또 다른 조건은 대지에 있었다. 상대적으로 좁은 면적에 건축선 적용을 받는 사다리꼴 형상의 대지라는 악조건은 소요면적을 충족하는 두 직사각형 평면을 미끄러뜨려 건축선 안으로 평면을 자리 잡게 만드는 방향으로 귀결되었다. 좁은 내부공간을 위한 전략은 1층 바닥에서 다락 천장높이까지 이어지는 천창으로 빛을 받는 보이드 공간과 이를 사이에 두고 모두 다섯 개의 높이로 분화된 스킵플로어 형식에서 찾았다. 지각상의 공간감은 연면적 수치의 크고 작음에서 나오는 것이 아니라 서로 다른 성격을 갖는 자리들이 공간 안에 얼마나 많은지, 그곳들 사이에서 일어나는 시각과 행위 양면의 관계들이 얼마나 다양한지, 또한 그 장소들이 오랜 시간을 두고 드러낼 소소하고 즐거운 경험들이 어떠한지에 달려 있다고 생각한다. 높은 벽면으로 둘러싸여 시선이 차단된 해먹이 있는 2층 테라스의 친밀한 공간, 드레스룸에서 바로 아래 다용도실로 빨래를 던져 넣을 수 있는 덕트, 아이방에서 암벽을 타듯 벽을 기어올라 도달하게 되는 다락 등이 그러한 대응이다.
