We believe the design potential of mid-block buildings far exceeds that which is often afforded them. In the dense urban context of Mexico City, we noticed the sides of buildings that abut one another are left blank with the expectation that they will be blocked or covered by taller, more dense development next door in the near future. Unfortunately, this may not happen for some time or ever, and as such, these blank surfaces are ubiquitous across the city. To demonstrate the depth of opportunity in these facades, we turned our new mid-block project, Profiles, into a defacto corner site, pulling one side away from its neighbor to create a continuous, two-sided facade. This move optimizes the user experience while maximizing the street-level profile of the project.

Profiles is an eight-story office building located on a one-way street. Pulling back from its three-story neighbor to the south ensures the oncoming vehicular traffic will always see a significant portion of the building’s facades. This increased overall visibility of the building also gives occupants greater access to daylight and natural ventilation while creating an accessible patio on the second floor. This open-air area addresses a 20% “open space” local building code requirement and together with the rooftop patio, provide users with ample outdoor amenity space.

The two street-facing facades are united by a perforated carbonsteel with electrostatic paint that follows the curvature of the building mass. The overall pattern of the perforation emanates from a 2D projection from the point on the street where the two sides are most visible. Using a repeated pattern of increasing openings, vertical striations emerge, mimicking tuffs of a curtain. Some of the perforated material is left attached to the panels; these chads change in size to add further depth to the facade by softening the appearance of the steel, and at times, dematerializing the panels themselves. The variable angles of the tabs also create a dynamic effect as lighting conditions change; sometimes creating shadows while at other times, they seem to disappear completely. Overall, the perforation was optimized for ventilation and light, and maintains privacy and visibility for occupants. Our approach demonstrates new opportunities in mid-block design that engage the street while shaping the user experience.

멕시코시티의 조밀한 도시 맥락이 가까운 미래에 더 큰 규모의 밀집 개발로 인해 건물이 막히거나 가려질 것이라는 전망으로 건물의 측면이 비어있었다. 불행히도 개발은 당분간 일어나지 않을 것이고 이러한 빈 표면은 도시 전역에서 흔하게 볼 수 있다. 파사드에서 기회의 깊이를 보여주기 위해 새로운 중간 블록 프로젝트인 ‘프로파일스 빌딩’을 사실상의 구석에 위치하도록 하여 연속되는 두 면의 파사드를 만들고 이웃한 건물에서 하나의 면을 떼어냈다. 이 움직임은 프로젝트의 거리 수준 개요를 극대화하면서 사용자 경험을 최적화한다.

프로파일스 빌딩은 8층 규모의 업무시설로 일방향 통행로에 위치하고 있다. 옆에 있는 3층짜리 건물에서 남쪽으로 물러나면 달려오는 차량 통행 중에 건물 전면의 상당 부분을 늘 볼 수 있다. 또한 건물의 전체적인 가시성이 향상됨에 따라 거주자들은 일광욕과 자연환기를 더 많이 할 수 있으며 2층에 접근 가능한 파티오도 만들수 있었다. 이 야외 구역은 20%의 “개방형 공간” 지역 건축 법규 요건을 충족하며 옥상 테라스와 함께 사용자들에게 충분한 야외 편의 공간을 제공한다.

파사드를 마주하고 있는 2차선 도로는 건물 매스의 굽어짐에 따라 정전기 페인트로 칠해진 구멍 뚫린 탄소강과 결합하고 있다. 천공의 전체적인 패턴은 양면이 가장 잘 보이는 거리의 지점으로부터 시작되는 2D 투사에서 나온다. 반복적으로 늘어나는 개구부의 패턴을 사용하여 수직으로 된 줄무늬가 나타나 커튼의 주름을 흉내낸다. 일부 구멍 뚫린 재료는 판넬에 부착되어 있다. 철강의 외관을 부드럽게 하여 파사드에 깊이를 더하는 다양한 크기의 차드는 때때로 판넬 자체를 비물질화한다. 탭의 다양한 각도는 조명 조건이 변화로 역동적인 효과를 생성하기도 한다. 때로는 그림자를 만들기도 하지만 다른 때는 완전히 사라지는 것처럼 보인다. 전반적으로, 천공은 환기와 빛에 최적화되었고, 거주자의 프라이버시와 가시성을 유지한다. 우리의 접근 방식은 사용자 경험을 형성하면서 거리에 관여하는 중간 블록 설계로 새로운 가능성을 입증한다.
