A structure begins by determining how to relate the lot of a building and people. The site is located on a narrow and long slope to Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, and there are old townhouses finished with red bricks, a church, and the official residence of Busan in the vicinity of it. It commands a view of Gwanganri beach and Gwangandaegyo Bridge to the east in the distance and the forest on the south of Hwangnyeongsan Mountain in the near.

Each land has its own unique placeness and power. It is always one of the deep concerns to establish a new relationship by visualizing the characteristics of the place after understanding the nature of the land and considering the relation of it to surroundings. How a new building is placed, what it is made of, and what the role of it is are important to the neighborhood as well as the architects and the building owners.

I wanted the spaces to be used for diverse purposes such as a cafe, offices, and a private studio and hoped to make them independent of each other, yet connected closely. The most core concepts of the new structure “Present” are to meet the needs of users, live together with the neighbors without ruining the view of the residents who have lived in the townhouses, and be harmonized with nature without disturbing the urban context.

The Present can be divided into a commercial space, which will be used for an independent bookstore and a cafe, and a workspace for offices and individual studios. It is to meet the purposes of the complex and its relationship with surrounding buildings at the same time. These two buildings are connected via the underground and the bridge on the second floor.

By dividing it into two buildings and emptying a space between them, I could create an “open space” containing many small gardens and independent terraces. It is an architectural solution that satisfies the needs of the users without disturbing the view of the neighbors, creates abundant spaces, and establishes a new close-range view all at once.
Unlike the simple external appearance, there are many open external spaces, although they seem closed, that make the space richer.
Moreover, the space is extended vertically and horizontally from the first floor to the second floor and from the interior space to Hwangnyeongsan Mountain and Gwanganri beach through the outdoor gardens and the terraces. Although the structure lies on a small lot, the space within the lot is extended infinitely.
