The site is placed inside a housing complex that was developed as a collective housing area and is located in a direction confronting a large apartment complex where the residents moved in almost at the same time, and the house was built for a family of four; the owner couple and their two children. It was built on a site that is close to a triangle as it becomes narrower towards the north side, with a mixed construction where the first and second floors are built as reinforced concrete structures, and the third floor as a heavy timber structure.

For the procurement of sunlight, the building was obliquely arranged so that two sides of the building could face the south side while securing the southern space as much as possible. The first and second floors, which were made with a reinforced concrete structure, were built in a simple cubic form of 6300*6300*6300. This can be seen as an architectural act that is completely different to the complex principle of the third floor’s heavy timber structure.

Unlike rational architectures made of concrete, which is one of the representative materials of contemporary architecture, architectures of wooden structures, which particularly react due to various factors, can be seen as an irrational architectural act in modern architecture. However, we contemplated the new possibilities of modern architecture within the conflicts of traditional architectural methods and contemporary architectural methods and proceeded to the work of architecturalizing the contrarieties.

When entering the front door along the west wall, the image of the space can be associated with the scent of cedar. On the first floor, there is the living room and kitchen, where there is a large window that is open towards the front yard, and this space gains openness as it pierces to the ceiling of the second floor. The natural light that enters from the large window on the south side weaves the space as one and presents a three-dimensional sense of space to the narrow house. Ascending to the second floor through the staircase that faces the front door, there is the couple’s bedroom, bathroom and dress room centering on the corridor. At the end of the hallway is a void space, and this space is connected to the living room on the first floor since a small bookcase and desk were planned instead of a handrail.

Furthermore, at the same time, it acts as a role of three-dimensionally dividing the space along with the square window in the couple’s bedroom. For the third floor, with the children’s room, bathroom, tatami space and attic, an eco-friendly design was focused on according ti the requirements of the owner, who considers the living environment of the children. The cedar and cypress wood materials used on the third floor, as trees of Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture, were built without using other materials such as nails, adhesives, etc., as all members were not prepared by the factory pre-cut method but with a frame-type construction method, where they are fitted by the hands of a local carpenter in Ibaraki.

In addition, in order to secure storage, which is also a problem of a narrow house, a storage space of around 1.5-pyeong (4.96m²) was arranged in the third-floor attic space, and a storage space was also planned at the lower part of the tatami room to solve the problem. In most cases, the structure, form, width and volume of the space is determined by the furnitures and objets owned by the resident when designing a narrow house. There are also many cases where the positions of openings of the building are determined by the arrangement of the furniture. We wanted to express the space’s diversity and sense of dimension by using a reasonable form of a cube, while embracing these physical constraints. This building, although it is a small-scaled narrow house, can be seen as the first step of seeking new possibilities of house construction, as a building where lucidity and tenacity of concrete coexists with the irregularity and flexibility of wood, in context with the current situation, where sustainability is required.
