Buam Daycare Center sits at the end of a street in a quiet residential area of Buam-dong. The project that started off as a competition had us contemplate on; “What makes a good daycare center?” The answers to the question was found through a thorough analysis of the site and while tackling the problems of the site.

The site, which measures just 360㎡, is located at the foot of Bukak mountain. It is triangular shaped site with each side adjoining a different street at different elevations- B1, 1st floor level and 3rd floor level. With such dramatic changes in elevation, and strict legal regulations, it was not easy to meet all the requirements. Lot and landscape coverage ratio each had to be 30% of the land area, playground area had to meet 47% of the land area. There were tight regulations on height, sunlight, parking space, and pedestrian walkways as well. To meet all the demands, a basement floor was designed to the maximum capacity. A triangular shaped sunken courtyard allows natural light and air flow to the basement floor. The rooftop floor as a playground by means of a playful-incline. The area underneath is an attic where children can play indoors. From basement floors to the rooftop, every inch of the space has intention to function as storage or playground.

Ill-treatment of children at daycare centers have been hot social issues recently. Installing CCTVs and enhancing surveillance cannot be a solution to the recurring problems. Children have to be nurtured with love and affection, rather than with deliberate surveillance. We designed the daycare as a warm and comfortable space that sparks spontaneous encounter and communication among the users of the space.

At the entrance of the daycare, there are “Windows of Communication” which engages communication through sight. It forms a space where children can fully express their feelings when they separate or meet their parents before and after class. The space stimulates imagination through changes in nature, time, and line of vision. Changes within the space(The Imagination House) inspires children to create their own games and to truly own the space. Childlike-ness often interpreted as bubbly windows and rainbow colors by grown ups, were avoided.

Through architectural language architect intended this daycare space to become an “Exciting and interesting place of enjoyment” instead of a space of “Separation and a place of detachment from parents.”

부암어린이집

부암어린이집은 부암동 조용한 주택가의 막다른 골목 끝에 위치한 숨겨진 어린이집이다. 설계공모로 진행된 이 프로젝트는 ‘어떤 어린이집을 만들까’에 대한 끊임없는 고민을 하게 만들었으며, 환경을 분석하고 대지가 가지고 있는 몇 가지 제약사항을 해결하는 데에서 설계의 실마리를 찾을 수 있었다.

대지는 북악산이 시작하는 산자락에 위치한 삼각형 모양의 작은 땅(360㎡)이다. 삼각형의 각 변은 지하 1층, 지상 1층, 지상 3층 높이에서 3개의 길(도로)과 만난다. 건축·조경면적이 각각 대지면적의 30%이고, 법적 놀이터 면적은 대지면적의 47%였다. 보행로와 주차공간을 확보하고 정북 일조권 제한과 층수 제한까지 적용하면, 일반적인 방법으로는 도저히 요구 면적을 채울 수 없는 땅이었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 지하층을 최대한 활용하고, 삼각 선큰(선큰마당)을 통해 지하에 자연채광과 환기가 가능하도록 설계했다. 옥상공간에는 자연스러운 경사를 주어 미끄럼대와 놀이언덕 등을 만들고, 그 밑으로 다락을 만들어 놀이공간을 조성했다. 지하부터 옥상까지 비록 작은 공간이라도 버리는 공간없이 최대한 활용하여 수납과 놀이공간으로 계획했다.

어린이집의 사회적 문제가 계속해서 관심사가 되고 있다. CCTV를 의무적으로 설치하는 방식은 본질적인 해결책이 아니다. 아이들은 감시로 이루어지는 타의적 안전보다 자발적 사랑과 보살핌 아래 있어야 한다. 우리가 제안하는 건축적 요소들은 구성원 간 자연스러운 만남과 소통을 유발하고, 따뜻하고 편안한 공간으로 인식하도록 만들었다. 부모와 떨어질 때의 아쉬움과 여운, 다시 만날 때까지의 기다림과 기대감 등의 감정을 충분히 나눌 수 있도록 공간을 마련하고, 서로의 시선(소통의 창)을 고려했다. 작은 공간의 변화(상상의 집)에도 아이들은 숨고, 점유하고, 새로운 놀이를 개발한다. 어른들의 눈높이에 의해 정의내려진 어린이스러움(동그라미 창, 무지개 색 등)보다는 자연과 시간, 시선의 변화에 따라 상상력을 자극하는 곳으로 조성했다. 건축가는 이곳이 아이들에게 부모와 떨어져서 잠시 맡겨지는 곳이 아니라 즐겁고, 흥미로운, 가고 싶은 집이 되기를 희망하며 이러한 건축적 제안을 했다.
