The site area in Seongsu-dong is characterized by its unique red brick color palette. Deciding whether a project should stand out from its surroundings or blend in is an important step of every project. This is more so for a remodeling project that needs to consider how much of the local color palette or existing building colors it should retain. Initially, the client did not like the old brick color and requested to have the entire house painted over in blue. However, the architect argued that the red brick color represented a local culture of the area and persuaded the client to see that the existing brick color of the building had beauty and value as it is. The core issue then became how to create a new expression of the building that blended in with the neighborhood and existing atmosphere.

To design the exterior walls freely in the brick architecture, structural stability had to be ensured. Unrelated to the safety of the building as a whole, the bricks of the exterior walls were at risk of collapsing. In order to minimize risk in the gravity type brick structure, we considered a method which gave vertical rhythm to the front elevation while maintaining the width of the existing opening.

This appeared to violate the horizontal nature of the brick, but in fact it was the most adaptable concept. It was the second house into an alley off a street with many passersby, but the new yet familiar look of the building was enough to stop passing people in their footsteps. Inside, too, the starting point of space planning was the structure. The client, who runs a publishing company, had plans to run a bookstore, poster shop, and cafe alongside the publishing office.

Publishing serves as the medium but the programs are slightly different from each other; in order for them to be independent yet open, it would need the space to be divided appropriately. Through a structural safety diagnosis, we obtained an accurate understanding of the existing building, and the architect, structural designers, construction team, and client underwent a long consultation process for the removal and reinforcement plan.

Like the exterior design, the big idea for the interior was to partially keep the atmosphere of the existing building, and we distinguished between the wall with a finish and the wall that is exposed according to the characteristic of the existing wall and the nature of the space to be newly created. The wall where the vintage poster is to be displayed was done so that the rough texture is exposed.

Despite it being the architect’s third remodeling project, the design process for this brick structure remodeling project was more intense and detailed than other, bigger remodeling projects, in that it had to overcome 20 years of insolvency. Arby Bookshop, the result of this process, will be a space where the owner of the publishing company and customers alike will be able to enjoy sophisticated pleasure within familiarity.
