Bloomberg’s new European headquarters is respectful of its location in the heart of the City of London, close to the Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the church of St. Stephen’s Walbrook.
In its form, massing and materials, the new building is uniquely of their place and time – a natural extension of the City that will endure and improve the surrounding public realm. It is a true exemplar of sustainable development, with a BREEAM Outstanding rating – the highest designstage score ever achieved by any major office development.
Occupying a full city block, the 3.2-acre site comprises two buildings united by bridges that span over a pedestrian arcade that reinstates Watling Street, an ancient Roman road that ran through the site. Bloomberg Arcade is now a key route for people moving around the City, with restaurants and cafes at ground level, set back behind an undulating façade under a covered colonnade.
Three public plazas, located at each end of the arcade and in front of the building’s entrance, provide new civic spaces in the heart of the Square Mile. Its striking façade is defined by a structural sandstone frame, with a series of large-scale bronze fins that shade the floor-to-ceiling glazing. The fins give the building a visual hierarchy and rhythm as they vary in scale, pitch and density across each façade according to orientation and solar exposure, while being an integral part of the building’s natural ventilation system.
Art plays a central role in the project, with major site-specific commissions in and around the building. Cristina Iglesias’ water sculpture in three parts, ‘Forgotten Streams’ – a homage to the ancient Walbrook River that once flowed through the site – defines the public spaces at each end of Bloomberg Arcade.
The new Bloomberg building also returns the archaeological remains of the Roman Temple of Mithras to the site of their original discovery, with a new interpretation centre and cultural hub designed to give visitors an immersive experience of the temple and bring the history of the site to life.
The main entrance to Bloomberg is defined by a substantial portecochère, where the building forms two sides of a new formal city square. Arriving at the main entrance, everyone passes through the reception lobby before being drawn into the Vortex – a dramatic double-height space created by three inclined, curving timber shells. From here, high-speed fullyglazed lifts with a unique concealed mechanism – another innovation developed specifically for the building – carry everyone directly to the sixth floor.
Central to Bloomberg’s ethos, the double-height ‘pantry’ on the sixth floor is the heart of the building, reflecting the importance of sharing and collaboration at the company. Everyone passes through this animated space, increasing the likelihood of chance meetings and informal discussions.
A distinctive hypotrochoid stepped ramp, characterized by its smooth continuous three-dimensional loop, flows through the full height of the building, adding to the drama of the space.
Clad in bronze, the ramp is designed and proportioned as a place of meeting and connection, allowing people to hold brief impromptu conversations with colleagues, whilst not impeding the flow of people. The notion of teamwork and collaboration flows into the desking systems and layout of each floor. Bespoke heightadjustable, radial desks are laid out in clusters and pods for up to six people, allowing for privacy, personalisation, wellbeing and collaborative working.
The ceiling is another unique and innovative element developed for the building, inspired by the pressed metal ceilings of New York. Its distinctive polished aluminium panels of ‘petals’ perform multiple roles – ceiling finish, light reflectors, cooling elements and acoustic attenuation – combining various elements of a typical office ceiling into an energy-saving integrated system.

블룸버그(Bloomberg)의 새로운 유럽 본사는 영국 런던 은행, 세인트 폴 대성당 및 세인트 스테판 월 브룩 교회와 가깝고 런던 시티 중심부에 위치하고 있다. 형태, 매스 및 재료 면에서 새 건물은 그들만의 장소와 시간을 독특하게 가지고 있는데, 이것은 주변의 공공 영역을 견디고 개선할 도시의 자연적인 확장이다. 도시 전체를 차지하고 있는 3.2에이커의 부지는 이곳을 관통했던 고대 로마 도로인 와틀링(Watling)가를 다시 복원하는 보행자 아케이드 위에 걸쳐 있는 두 개의 다리로 이루어져 있다.
블룸버그(Bloomberg) 아케이드는 이제 지하에 식당과 카페가 들어서면 도시 곳곳을 이동하는 사람들의 주요 노선이 되었으며, 뒤덮인 콜로네이드 아래에서 물결 모양의 입면 뒤로 물러나 있다. 아케이드의 양쪽 끝과 건물 입구의 세 공공 광장은 마일(Mile) 광장의 중심부에 새로운 시민 공간을 제공한다.
그것의 두드러지는 입면은 구조상 사암 구조로, 일련의 대형 청동 지느러미가 바닥에서 천장까지의 유리를 가린다. 지느러미는 건물의 자연 환기 시스템의 필수적인 요소인 동시에 태양 노출에 따라 각 면에 걸쳐 규모, 높이, 밀도가 다르기 때문에 건물에 시각적 계층과 리듬을 부여한다. 예술 놀이는 건물 안팎의 주요 사이트별 커미션을 중심으로 프로젝트에서 중심 역할을 한다.
한때 대지를 흘렀던 고대 월브룩(Walbrook) 강에 대한 경의로 ‘Forgotten Streams’이라는 세 부분으로 나뉜 크리스티나 이글레시아스(Cristina Iglesias)의 물 조각으로 블룸버그 아케이드의 각 끝에 있는 공공 장소를 정의한다. 새로운 블룸버그 건물은 또한 로마 미트라스 사원(Roman Temple Of Mithras)의 고고학적 유적을 그들의 원래 발견 장소로 돌려주는데, 방문객들에게 이 신전의 몰입적인 경험을 제공하고 그 유적지의 역사를 되살릴 수 있도록 고안된 새로운 해석 센터와 문화 중심지가 있다.
블룸버그의 정문은 그 건물이 새로이 공식적인 도시 광장의 양면을 형성하는 실질적인 포르테-코체르(Porte- Cochere)로 정의된다. 정문에 도착한 사람들은 모두 리셉션 로비를 지나 소용돌이 안으로 빨려 들어간다. 이 공간은 세 개의 기울어져 휘어진 목재 껍질에 의해 제작된 극적인 이중 높이 공간이다.
여기서부터 건물을 위해 특별히 개발된 또 다른 혁신인 독특한 은폐 메커니즘을 가진 고속 유리 엘리베이터는 사람들을 6층으로 바로 운송한다. 블룸버그의 정신에 중추적인 6층의 이중 높이 ‘식료품 저장실’은 건물의 핵심이며, 회사에서 공유 및 공동 작업의 중요성을 반영한 것이다. 모든 사람들이 애니메이션 공간을 통과하기 때문에 우연한 만남과 비공식적 토론의 가능성을 높인다.
특유의 하이포트로코이드 계단 램프가 부드럽고 연속적인 3차원 루프로 특징 지어져 건물 전체 높이를 통해 공간의 드라마를 더한다. 청동색으로 장식된 램프는 회의 및 연결의 장소로 설계되고 균형 잡힌 채로 사람들의 흐름을 방해하지 않으면서 동료와 간단한 즉석 대화를 나눌 수 있게 한다.
팀워크와 협업의 개념은 각 층의 탁상 시스템과 배치로 흘러 들어간다. 맞춤형 높이 조절 가능 방사형 책상은 클러스터 및 포드에 최대 6명의 인원을 배치함으로써 프라이버시, 개인화, 웰빙 및 협업 작업을 가능하게 한다.
천장은 뉴욕의 눌려진 금속 천장에서 영감을 얻었으며 건물을 위해 개발된 또 다른 독특하고 혁신적인 요소이다. ‘꽃잎’으로 특색 지어지는 독특한 알루미늄 패널은 전형적인 사무실 천장의 다양한 요소를 에너지 절약형 통합 시스템으로 결합하여 천장 마감, 조명 반사, 냉각 요소 및 음향 감소 등 다양한 역할을 수행한다.
