THE ECHO

MAA, took part with the ‘THE ECHO’ installation in the Istanbul Beyoğlu Light Exhibition as part of the Istanbul Beyoğlu Cultural Road Festival. MAA establishes a unique dialogue with the citizens by making the invisible visible with ‘THE ECHO’ of Historical Matbah Emini Hasan Ağa Fountain (1649), which is abandoned, forgotten and one of the most important witnesses of many encounters and re-meanings in the city. The Echo draw attention to the light, the dark, the night, the concepts such as shadows and form made visible in the light, togetherness, existence, change and transformation, differences and tolerance.

‘THE ECHO’ is designed by recycling waste water pipes. It is also an installation design that supports the reduction of carbon footprint. The gathering of pipes, like drops of water, forms a cluster of lichens surrounding the fountain. The concept of the pipes designing a parabolic form is a symbol of a transition as transparent as water, of a process, even of a moment. At the same time, the symbiotic relationship of ‘THE ECHO’ is not only with the fountain, but also with the city and the natural and artificial dynamics in the city is an answer to the question of ‘how it can define itself with light, while creating the main concept of the design’.

‘THE ECHO’ is not a only design that only makes sense in itself, that is produced of water pipes and that occurs in the result of these pipes. In the streets dynamics, especially the Beyoğlu, which is planned as an installation area, and the Matbah Emini Hasan Ağa Fountain, shows an active attitude every hour of the day, like a living organism. How the symbiotic relationship it establishes with the darkness in the city is understood by the citizen or the audience is not a question that has a single and pure answer. The citizen searches for and finds a realization in the dark or a reflection under the light. The fountain, which wants to make its voice heard again, this time screams so loud that the streets echo with this sound. This reflection and this ‘THE ECHO’ are also an emphasis of the awareness under Galata Tower in its location.

이스탄불 베욜루 문화 거리 축제에서 있었던, 2021년 이스탄불 베욜루 조명 전시회에 ‘디 에코(THE ECHO)’가 설치됐다. MAA는 역사적인 장소인 마트바 에미니 하산 아아 분수(Matbah Emini Hasan Ağa Fountain(1649))에 ‘디 에코’를 통해 보이지 않는 것을 가시적으로 보이게 함으로써 시민과의 소통을 만들어 냈다. 이 분수대는 도시 속에서 잊혀지고 지워진 수많은 만남과 의미들의 중요한 목격자 중의 하나다. 디 에코는 빛, 어둠, 밤, 빛 속에서 보여지는 그림자와 형태의 개념과 공생, 존재, 변화와 변형 그리고 차이와 관용에 주위를 기울인다.

물방울처럼 이끼를 만들어 낸다. 포물선 형태를 띤 파이프를 사용한 콘셉트는 투명한 물의 전환과 과정의 한 순간을 상징한다. 동시에 ‘디 에코’의 공생 관계는 분수에서만 아니라 도시와 도시의 자연적, 인공적인 역동성을 이야기하고 ‘디자인의 주된 콘셉트를 만드는 과정에서 빛으로 스스로를 어떻게 정의할 수 있는가’라는 질문에 대한 답을 찾았다.

‘디 에코’는 이 자체만으로는 의미 있는 디자인이 아니다. 파이프로 만들어지고, 파이프들이 만들어낸 결론으로 의미가 만들어졌다. 건축가는 어두운 도시 속 공생관계를 위해 시민이나 방문객들이 이곳을 어떻게 이해하고 있는지를 살펴보고, 도시의 어둠 속에서의 이 장소를 새롭게 인식할 기회를 만들었다. 자신의 소리를 다시 들려주고 싶었던 분수는 ‘디 에코’를 통해 큰 반향을 만들었다.
