The client who came to us one day wanted to have his personal office on the top floor and a rental space on the downstairs. Although the alley in Dangin-dong looks old, seeing the number of cafes, restaurants, and workshops increasing, they said they imagined the streets of Paris where they had been for a long time. So it was hard to hide the embarrassment at first that the new building should be square, but not too modern, and that they would be able to express the street they imagined only if it felt neo-classical. It's not easy to come up with images of Paris and Dangin-dong together.

 

It may be natural, but they could not transplant the emotions they felt in Paris into Dangin-dong. The modern interpretation, persuaded after a long period of consideration, was to emphasize the regular arrangement of pillars and windows, which are characteristic of old brick house buildings. In this way, concrete pillars were surrounded by the frame of the building at regular intervals and exposed to the surface, thereby simplifying the internal structure to secure a relatively large rental space. Such a structure naturally creates a grid of columns and slabs, and for more neat and tidier look, a regular pattern was constructed by adding walls. Since the complex and irregular alignment of the old neighborhood is the background, the facade of the new building to be built is arranged, the decoration is minimized, and a clear contrast is achieved with simple repetition of windows. In particular, the second and third floors are made of white bricks, which are the same material as the surrounding buildings, but they feel like a lump, and the eyes are naturally looked up. The fourth floor is designed to replace the continuous pattern of the grid in the form of a column, making the building look larger and giving it a special sense of space that only the space has, linked to the terrace.

 

Above all, the characteristic of Lime-Rhyme is its bold use of lime colors. I think it was acceptable because there were colorful walls in the emotions and memories of the clients I felt in the alley in Paris. A fresh newbie appeared in the cracks of old and dull brick buildings in the alley, which had not been newly built for nearly 20 years. Although it is somewhat intense, such energy and vitality also cause a new wind to blow up in Dangin-dong, an old neighborhood. It is fortunate that the old residents of the alley are already welcoming and paying attention to Newbie, contrary to our concerns.

라임라임 

 

어느 날 우리를 찾아온 클라이언트는 최상층에 본인의 개인 사무실을 두고 아래층은 임대공간이 있는 건축물을 마련하길 원했다. 당인동 골목이 비록 낡아 보이지만 여러 카페와 음식점, 공방이 점점 늘어나는 것을 보며 그들이 오랜 시간 지내왔던 파리의 거리를 상상했다고 전했다. 그래서 새로 짓는 건축물은 네모반듯하되 너무 요즘 건축물 같지 않아야 하며 네오클래시컬한 느낌이어야만 그들이 상상했던 거리를 표현할 수 있을 것이라는 주문에 처음엔 사실 당혹감을 감추기 어려웠다. 파리와 당인동 이미지를 함께 떠올리기란 쉽지 않으니까. 

 

당연한 이야기겠지만 무작정 그들이 파리에서 느꼈던 감성 그대로 당인동에 이식할 수 없었다. 나름 오랜 고민 끝에 설득한 현대적인 해석은 옛 벽돌집 건축물의 특징인 규칙적인 기둥과 창의 배열을 좀 더 강조시키는 것이었다. 그렇게 콘크리트 기둥을 일정한 간격으로 건축물 테두리를 따라 둘러 입면으로 노출되게 하여, 내부의 구조를 단순화하여 비교적 넓은 임대공간을 확보했다. 그러한 구조로 자연스럽게 기둥과 슬라브로 그리드가 만들어지고, 좀 더 반듯하고 정갈한 느낌을 위해 벽을 덧대어 규칙적인 패턴을 구성하였다. 오래된 동네의 복잡하고 불규칙한 선형이 배경이 되므로, 새롭게 들어설 건축물의 면을 정돈하고 장식은 최소화하면서 단순한 창의 반복으로 분명한 대비를 이루도록 만들었다. 특히 2, 3층은 백색 벽돌로 주변 건축물과 동일한 재료지만 하나의 덩어리라는 느낌을 주며 시선은 자연스럽게 위를 바라보도록 만들었다. 4층은 그리드의 연속적 패턴이 열주의 형태로 치환되며 건축물이 더 커 보이게 하고 테라스와 연계된, 그 공간만이 갖는 특별한 공간감을 부여하도록 설계했다.

 

무엇보다도 라임라임의 특징은 라임(Lime) 색상의 과감한 사용이다. 파리의 골목에서 느꼈던 클라이언트의 감성과 기억 한편에 컬러풀한 벽들이 존재했기에 수용할 수 있었다고 생각한다. 20년 가까이 신축이 없었던 골목의 낡고 칙칙하게 보일 수 있는 벽돌 건축물 틈에서 상큼한 뉴비가 등장한 것이다. 다소 강렬하지만 그러한 에너지와 활기로 인해 오래된 동네인 당인동에도 새로운 바람이 불길 바란다. 이미 골목의 오래된 주민들은 우리의 우려와 달리 뉴비를 반갑게 맞아주고 관심 가져주고 있으니 참 다행이다.
