PROFUNDITY CROW

 

The Seoul Metropolitan Government's plan to transform the Dangin-ri Power Plant into a cultural complex was enough to create a new wave in the surrounding neighborhood, but most of the residents are elderly and there was pressure of change, so it feels like they are back to 20~30 years ago.

 

This place, which I visited before the design of the office building, was somewhat difficult to access because it was difficult to plan due to the uneven boundaries of the land and because it was deep in the alley. However, the South, which is used as a parking lot site nearby, was rather difficult to access the building from the road, but it had an unexpected charm to see the building well. In addition, if you climb more than three floors, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the Han River and the National Assembly building far away, so it was a difficult condition in many ways, but it was a worthwhile attempt.

 

As a long-time resident, the owner of the building had a special affection here, so he asked us to make detailed plans so that the existing residents of the old residence would not be burdened with privacy and other burdens. Someone quietly built a new nest here, which was left empty in an old neighborhood. There is a black building between several old houses consisting of red bricks and gray granite. The building, full of strange feelings that cannot be known whether it was hoped to stand out or whether it was a stranger who came to the wrong place, will give a mysterious feeling with a strong contrast and strong presence compared to the surroundings. Not only the exterior wall, but also the roof tilted by the sun's rays, the curtain wall window opened by the Han River, all of which are black, are reminiscent of a crow. The crow was also called the auspicious sign of direction when it lost its direction in the open sea, so as a subject that evokes the aging atmosphere of this neighborhood, he hoped to draw someone's eyes with a strange atmosphere as if they were standing in a nice tuxedo in the wilderness. Omyo has an artificial sense of proportion that is quite different from the surrounding buildings. The height of the high front and terrace railing design, which are designed to be as sharp as possible within the legal limit, is completely different from the height proportion of a neighborhood full of three-story multi-family houses. In addition, as the material and color of the surface are applied in the same tone as the whole, the black lump, which looks relatively large, is very unfamiliar. The twist doesn't end here. You may think that the interior is vaguely dark following the outside, but in fact, the interior space has a bright atmosphere in contrast to this. The space, which will be used as an office, solves basic indoor lighting by maximizing the open side of the front with a wide electric window extending from the first to fourth floors, while the adjacent building is planned to minimize privacy infringement with existing residents.

 

Likewise, the continuous sequence combined with shape, material, and space gives misconception of confronting strange object escaping from familiarity so that it rather gives an effect of immersion and standing out. It is hoped that it will lead to a new trend that will draw more attention to the aging neighborhood as an act of making the scenery of the neighborhood face-to-face, which has been so familiar so far.

 

 

 

 

오묘 烏妙_ 묘한 까마귀 

 

오래전부터 당인리발전소를 문화복합공간으로 변모하겠다는 서울시의 계획은 주변 동네의 새로운 물결을 일으키기에 충분했지만, 주민의 대부분이 노인들이라 변화에 부담이 있어 이 골목에 들어서면 마치 2~30년 전으로 돌아간 느낌이다.

 

사옥 설계에 앞서 찾아간 이곳은 대지 경계가 울퉁불퉁하여 계획이 난해한 땅인데다가 골목 깊숙한 곳에 있는 탓에 접근이 다소 어려웠다. 하지만 인근에 주차장 부지로 사용되는 남측이 열려있어 오히려 차로에서 이 건축물로 접근하기 어려웠지만, 이 건축물을 잘 볼 수 있는 반전 매력이 있었다. 게다가 3층 이상 올라서게 되면 저 멀리 한강과 국회의사당이 보일 정도로 탁 트인 전망을 누릴 수 있을 듯하니 여러모로 어려운 여건이지만 해볼 만한 시도였다. 건축주는 오랜 주민으로서 이곳에 특별한 애정이 있었던 터라, 우리에게 기존의 오랜 주거지 주민들에게 프라이버시를 비롯한 여러 부담이 되지 않도록 섬세한 계획을 요청했다.

 

오래된 동네에 빈집으로 남겨져 있던 이곳에 조용히 누군가가 새로운 둥지를 틀었다. 붉은 벽돌과 회색의 화강석으로 이루어진 여러 낡은 주택들 사이로 새까만 건축물이 자리한다. 돋보이길 바란 것인지, 잘못 찾아온 이방인인지 그 의도를 알 수 없는 생경한 느낌이 가득한 이 건축물은 주변과 비교하여 강한 대비 감과 강한 존재감으로 오묘한 느낌을 줄 것이다. 외벽은 물론이거니와 일조 사선에 의해 기울어진 지붕, 한강으로 열린 커튼월 창, 이 모든 것이 거뭇한 이 건축물은 마치 까마귀 한 마리를 연상시킨다. 까마귀는 망망대해에서 방향을 잃었을 때 방향을 알려주는 길조로 불리기도 했기에, 점점 낡아가고 있는 이 동네 분위기를 환기하는 주체로서 황야에 턱시도를 멋지게 차려입고 서 있는 듯한 묘한 분위기로 누군가의 눈길들을 끌어내길 바랐다. 오묘는 주변 건물과 사뭇 다른 인위적인 비례감을 가진다. 법적인 한계 내에서 최상층의 지붕을 최대한 뾰족하게 계획하여 만들어진 높은 정면과 테라스 난간 디자인을 변형하여 편집한 높이는 오랫동안 3층 다가구주택으로 가득한 동네가 가진 높이 비례와는 전혀 다른 느낌이다. 게다가 전체적으로 입면의 재료와 색감을 같은 톤으로 적용하다 보니 상대적으로 커 보이는 검은색 덩어리 감은 매우 낯설게 다가온다. 반전은 여기서 끝나지 않는다. 외부에 이어 내부도 막연히 어두우리라 생각하겠지만 실제로 내부 공간은 이와 대비되는 밝은 분위기로 연출하였다. 사무실로 사용될 이 공간은 기존 주민들과의 프라이버시 침해를 최소화하기 위해 인접 건축물이 있는 면은 창을 작게 계획하되 전면부의 탁 트인 면은 1층부터 4층까지 이어지는 넓은 전창으로 극대화하여 기본적인 실내 채광을 해결했다. 

 

이렇듯 형태와 재료, 공간이 복합된 연속된 시퀀스는 친숙함에서 벗어나 낯선 대상을 마주하는 듯한 착각을 주어 오히려 몰입하게 하고 돋보이게 하는 효과를 가져온다. 지금껏 너무나 친숙한 나머지 무심코 지나쳤던 동네의 풍경들을 새롭게 대면하게 하는 행위로서 낡아가기만 한 이 동네를 좀 더 주목받게 하는 새로운 흐름으로 이어지길 희망한다
