The site is situated at the corner of a large parking lot that is hidden within a block in Ganghwa-daero. Although it is located in the center of Ganghwa-eup, it cannot be seen from the main street, and the side street that is consistently used by local residents goes across the parking lot. Since it is also connected to the small alley behind the site, it is a place that is frequently visited by the neighborhood. Furthermore, as it is surrounded by large and small houses as well as commercial facilities, its geographical and environmental benefits and drawbacks of the program (commercial facilities and houses) are mixed.

Each space serves as a layer for the next space. The cafe on the first floor is hidden by rough walls. Since it faces the parking lot and the five-story commercial facility, a space where the view is focused to the inside was needed rather than a space that is open to the exterior. The rough concrete wall provokes the curiosity of those passing by, and creates a space that is silently surrounded for visitors. The transitional space between the concrete wall and the cafe space allows light into the interior space and protects it from the complicated exterior. When the cafe hall is entered, another hidden exterior space appears inside. This small garden just for visitors creates a visual expansion of the interior space and allows the change of seasons to be felt.

The living room and bedroom of the two-story detached house are joined and divided through the doors (opening walls). In a living space, a structure with a variable nature allows the expansion of a limited space. The 100m² house has a -shaped structure that is divided into the kitchen- living room and rooms-balcony, but it extends into a single space through the doors (opening walls). This, in particular, allows the sun in the daytime and the setting sun at nightfall to be included in the living room.

The curved facade that meets the balcony protects the living space from the outside, and at the same time, allows natural light to be brought into the inside. The shape of the light and shadow created in the bedroom by the curves allows the change of time to be felt and paints colorful pictures in the small house space. As the high ceiling created along the sloped roof vertically expands the area of the narrow horizontal space and provides a sense of openness to the living room and kitchen, and as the morning sunlight illuminates the bedroom space at the end of the slope, an ample space is created.

The form language of the horizontal and vertical, as well as the straight and curved lines were portrayed based on the placeness of the land. On a site, the horizontal and vertical lines that mark the beginning and the end are facing forward as if to shelter the neighborhood. Those who pass the existing side street see a new milestone of the neighborhood, and those who approach through the alley perceive a vertical symbolism due to the curve. Each element has its own outer skin. The walls that form the horizontal sides were finished with rough concrete, the volume of the curves with bricks and the roof with zinc, and this allows an overall sense of unity to be felt and completes the architectural language.

궁금증을 불러오는 곡선과 직선의 벽, 라 메종 시크릿

대지는 강화대로에서 한 블록 안에 숨어있는 넓은 주차장 모서리에 자리 잡고 있다. 강화읍 내의 중심에 위치하지만, 대로변에서는 보이지 않고, 지역 주민들이 자주 이용하는 생활도로가 주차장을 가로질러 지나간다. 대지 뒤쪽의 작은 골목길과도 연결되어 있어, 주변 이웃들의 이동이 잦은 장소다. 또한, 주변은 온통 크고 작은 주택, 상업시설로 둘러싸여 있어 프로그램(상업시설과 주택)의 지리적, 환경적 장단점이 서로 섞여 있는 곳이다. 이러한 제약과 환경은 장소의 성격을 만들어내고, ‘이 동네에 없는 디자인’이란 요청에 대해 ‘이곳에서만 가능한 디자인’이라는 답변을 찾아냈다.

각각의 공간은 다음 공간을 위한 켜(Layer)의 역할을 한다. 1층 카페는 거친 벽에 의해 숨겨져 있다. 주차장과 5층 높이의 상업시설을 마주 보고 있어, 외부를 향해 열린 공간보다는 내부로 시야가 집중되는 공간이 필요했다. 거친 콘크리트 벽은 그 앞을 지나가는 이들에게는 궁금증을, 방문객들에게는 고요하게 둘러싸인 공간을 만들어준다. 콘크리트 벽과 카페 공간 사이의 작은 전이공간은 내부공간으로의 채광을 가능케 하고, 복잡한 외부로부터 보호한다. 카페 홀로 들어서게 되면 안쪽에 숨은 또 다른 외부공간이 나타난다. 방문객들만을 위한 이 작은 정원은 내부공간의 시각적 확장성을 만들어주며, 계절의 변화를 느끼게 한다.

2층 단독주택의 거실과 침실은 문(열리는 벽)을 통해 합쳐지고 나눠진다. 거주공간에서 가변적 성격의 구조는 제한된 공간의 확장성을 갖게 한다. 30평 남짓한 단독주택은 부엌-거실과 방-발코니로 구분된 一자 구조이지만, 문(열리는 벽)을 통해 하나의 공간으로 확장된다. 이는 특히 거실에서 낮의 해와 해질녘 석양을 모두 담을 수 있게 한다. 발코니와 만나는 곡선 입면은 외부로부터 거주공간을 보호하고, 동시에 내부로의 자연채광을 가능케 한다. 곡선에 의해 침실에 그려지는 빛과 그림자의 모양은 시간의 변화를 느끼게 하여 작은 주택 공간에 다채로운 그림을 그려낸다. 경사지붕을 따라 만들어진 높은 천장고는 협소한 수평 공간의 면적을 수직적으로 넓혀 거실과 부엌에 개방감을 주고, 경사 끝자락의 침실은 아침의 햇빛으로 공간을 밝히기에, 충분한 공간을 만들어낸다.

수평과 수직, 직선과 곡선의 형태 언어는 땅이 가진 장소성을 바탕으로 그려졌다. 대지 뒤편 서로 다른 방향의 종착점과도 같은 땅에 시작과 끝을 알리는 수평과 수직의 선은 주변 마을을 감싸듯 정면을 바라보고 있다. 기존의 생활도로를 지나가는 이들은 마을의 새로운 이정표를 보게 되고, 작은 골목을 지나 접근하는 이들은 곡선으로 인한 수직적 상징성을 인지하게 된다. 각각의 요소는 자기만의 표피를 갖는다. 수평의 면을 만드는 벽은 거친 콘크리트, 곡선의 볼륨감은 전벽돌, 지붕은 징크로 마감하여 전체적인 통일감을 느낄 수 있게 하고, 그 형태 언어를 완성시켜준다.
