Artist Alice Trepp models sculptures with her hands, immortalizing moments in time. Artists work on their subject while architects get people to live inside what they build. The Trepp Atelier was developed for a person but also for a place. Designing an Atelier to mirror the thought and philosophy of an artist has long fascinated generations of artists and the architects charged with the task.

Located near Origlio, a village overlooking the lake of the same name, Alice Trepp’s Studio is both a place of work and a home. Atelier Trepp is built to slot as naturally as possible into the contour lines forming the morphology of the site. Placed mainly underground, it takes its cue from ancient Greek theaters that were molded to fit into the natural morphology of their context. Wedged into the two highest upward-curving contour lines, the building fits seamlessly into the sinuous lie of the land. The volume takes shape rising like leaves out of the ground to make the architecture appear a natural landscape feature. An iconic touch has been added by pivoting the construction around a ‘cenote’, in acknowledgement of the artist’s Ecuadorian origins. Built around this core, the two stories intersect, creating a dynamic play of transparency and visual permeability. Interior and exterior spaces blend and re-form, constantly interacting with the light and the surrounding countryside.

The cenote in Atelier Trepp is a space of contemplation and communion with nature. Reflected, refracted light playing on water is conducive to a multi-sensorial awareness of the passing of time. The cenote marks out the passing of time as the day proceeds and the light changes, capturing the fleeting moments of the day. The freshness coming off the water, the light breeze that gently sways the sweet-smelling overhanging vegetation, the twittering of birds, and the view of the passing clouds conjure up visions of the artist lying on the gravel of the shallow water immersed in a moment of sensory exploration - the search for the sublime in the everyday, a moment of contemplation for the artist before, during and after the creation of a work of art.

초목으로 덮인 작업실, 아틀리에 앨리스 트렙 

예술가 앨리스 트렙(Alice Trepp)은 손으로 조각품을 모델링하여 시간의 순간들을 불멸하게 만든다. 예술가들은 그들의 대상에 대해 작업하는 반면, 건축가는 사람들이 자신이 만들어 내는 공간에 살게 하는 작업을 한다. 초목으로 덮인 앨리스 트렙의 작업실(Trepp Atelier)은 예술가 뿐만 아니라 건축적 공간을 위해 디자인됐다. 작업실의 설계란 예술가의 생각과 예술적 철학을 반영하는 공간이여야 했다.

건축가는 같은 이름의 호수가 내려다 보이는 마을, 오리글리오(Origlio) 근처 앨리스 트렙의 이 작업실은 일을 하는 공간과 거주를 위한 공간, 두 가지 기능을 한다. 이 곳은 부지의 형태를 형성하는 등고선에 자연스럽게 자리를 잡고, 등고선의 형태와 일치하도록 세워졌다. 건축물의 대부분 공간은 지하에 배치됐으며, 그들 문맥 속 자연 형태에 맞게 고대 그리스 극장에서 유래된 모습을 하고 있다. 두 개의 가장 높은 둥근 등고선에 묻힌 이 건물은 땅의 구불구불한 지형에 완벽하게 들어맞는다. 자연적인 지형의 특징의 일부로 보이도록 땅에 떨어진 나뭇잎처럼 상승하는 모습을 하고 있다.

에콰도르 출신의 앨리스 트렙을 고려하여, ‘세노테(Cenote, 물로 가득 차 있는 둥근 돌리네를 가리키는 말)’ 주위로 건축물을 회전시켜 상징적인 공간이 만들어져 있다. 이 코어를 중심으로 두 이야기가 교차하여 투명성과 시각적 투과성의 역동적인 역할을 만들어낸다. 내부 및 외부 공간은 빛과 주변 전원과 끊임없이 상호 작용하면서 조화를 이루고 재구성된다. 작업실의 세노테는 자연과 사색하고, 친교하는 공간이다. 물 표면에서 반사되고 굴절된 빛은 시간의 흐름에 대한 다채로운 감각을 심어준다. 세노테는 하루가 흐를 때 마다, 시간이 지날 때 마다, 변화하는 빛과 하루의 한 순간들을 포착하게 끔 만든다. 물에서 나오는 신선하고 달콤한 향기가 초목을 부드럽게 흔들고, 이 산들 바람과 새들의 지저귀는 소리, 지나가는 구름의 모습이 세노테에 담겨, 일상의 숭고한 부분을 비춰내도록 만든다. 앨리스 트렙이 예술 작품을 만들기 전, 작품을 만드는 도중 또는 작품을 만든 후, 예술가가 생각하는 모든 순간, 감각적인 그 순간은 얕은 물 잠긴 자갈처럼 누워있다가, 상상을 일깨우도록 만든다.
