At the foot of Namsan mountain in Gangbuk, Seoul, the site is situated at a location that overlooks the N Seoul Tower, Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel and the hills of Itaewon. The site is located 9m below the neighborhood alley that continues from Namsan mountain’s Sowol-gil, and there is a 6m slope under the site. With the existing building, one had to ascend the staircase underneath and enter the 1.5th floor to get to the first floor. Therefore, the staircase was moved up to the northeast and the south was entirely opened to bring in the light and be able to face the traces of the site. As you go down from the third floor to the first floor, the depth of the staircase deepens, and the wide and high sense of space gradually becomes narrower and lower. When one reaches the first floor and goes out through the door, the vertical depth of the interior that descended through the stairs is felt once again at the exterior as the urban structures such as the stonework, bedrock, fences, walls, stairs and rails, and nature such as the tress of neighboring houses, that the land would have kept for decades, in other words, the traces of time, are intensely faced.

From the first floor, a split-level residential space for leasing, the urban view at the southwest can be seen as one goes up the steel staircase that leads to the second floor. The circulation leads from the small kitchen adjoining the stairs to the parlor, the living room and a long, narrow room. As for the kitchen and the parlor, they can be divided with glass walls, sliding doors, etc. in the future if an additional room is needed. The staircase and service spaces (boiler room, utility rooms, restrooms) etc. were arranged at the parts facing the northeastern stonewalls and bedrocks, considering their humidity and poor sunlight. The third floor was planned as a studio for the client, who is a photographer. The shooting and waiting spaces of the studio are separated with a 50cm level difference. Due to the level difference, part of the residential area on the second floor secures a high floor height (approximately 2.8m). The windows were made long and high from the east to the west, according to the request of the client, who wants to take portraits against the backdrop of urban landscapes that have different impressions depending on the brightness and intensity of the ever-changing light. If the photo shoot is held at the exterior parking lot, which is at the same level as the road, a different view will be able to be experienced under similar terms. The 1.3m square skylight becomes a vertical passage that connects the two worlds.

The bricks that have a similar color to the earth become lumps, and the concrete structure, bedrock, etc. reveal their natural appearance. Other elements (rails, doors, window frames, etc.) add artificial beauty as they are installed in white. Equipment such as pipes were colored in light grey to make it seem as if they were hidden. The building’s staircase and rooftop floor are important elements that determine the image of this building. The plan for the stair hall of the rooftop that soars up the deck was not easy since the elevation was a polygon. The whole appearance of the rooftop, which can only be seen by looking around and experiencing it, has a form that seems to have embodied a person in profile due to the northern sunlight diagonal line.

남산 자락에 자리 잡은 협소주택, 플라잉 페어리

서울 강북의 남산 자락, 남산타워와 하얏트 호텔, 이태원의 구릉지 전경이 바라다보이는 자리로 남산 소월길에서 연결된 동네 골목을 따라 들어오면 9m 아래에 그 대지가 있고, 대지 아래 다시 6m의 경사가 있다. 기존의 건축물은 아래 계단을 통해 올라오다가 1.5층으로 진입하여 건물의 아래와 갈 수 있는 구조였는데, 계단실의 위치가 북동쪽으로 올라가고, 남쪽이 온전히 열리면서 빛을 끌어들이고 대지의 흔적을 마주하는 공간으로 바뀌었다. 3층에서 1층으로 내려갈수록 계단실의 깊이는 깊어지고, 공간감은 넓고 높았다가 점차로 좁고 낮아진다. 1층에 이르러 문을 통해 밖으로 돌아 나가면 계단을 통해 내려온 내부의 수직적인 깊이는 다시 외부에서 수십 년간 대지가 지녔을 석축과 암반, 담, 벽, 계단, 난간 등의 도시구조물과 그리고 이웃집의 나무와 같은 자연, 즉 시간의 흔적을 강렬하게 대면하게 된다.

임대를 위한 복층 주거 공간인 1층은 2층으로 연결되는 철제계단을 통해 올라가면서 남서측의 도시뷰를 바라볼 수 있다. 동선은 계단에 면한 작은 주방에서 응접실, 거실, 그리고 좁고 긴 방으로 연결된다. 주방과 응접실은 추가로 방이 필요한 경우 추후 유리벽과 슬라이딩 도어 등을 통해 나눌 수 있다. 북동쪽의 석축 및 암반과 면한 부분은 습기와 빛이 잘 들지 않는 점을 고려해 계단실과 서비스 공간(보일러실, 다용도실, 화장실) 등이 배치됐다. 3층은 건축주인 사진작가의 스튜디오다. 매일 변하는 빛의 밝기와 강도에 따라 느낌이 다른 도시경관을 배경으로 인물 사진을 찍고자 하는 건축주의 요구에 따라 동쪽에서 서쪽으로 창을 길고 높게 냈다. 1.3m의 정사각형 천창은 그 두 세계를 잇는 수직적인 통로가 된다.

흙색과 유사한 벽돌은 덩어리가 되고, 콘크리트 구조물, 암석 등은 그 본연의 모습을 그대로 드러낸다. 그 외의 요소들(난간, 문, 창틀 등)은 대부분 백색으로 설치하여 인공미를 더한다. 파이프와 같은 설비는 밝은 회색(Light Grey)으로 감춰진 듯 보이도록 했다. 이 건물의 계단실과 옥탑층은 건물의 이미지를 경정하는 중요한 요소다. 데크 위의 솟아오른 옥탑의 계단실 계획은 평면이 다각형이기 때문에 쉽지 않았다. 돌아보며 경험해야만 전체의 모습을 알 수 있는 옥탑은 정북일조사선에 의해 그려진 형태가 마치 사람의 옆모습을 형상화한 듯하다.
