The city’s streets provide various sceneries. The streetscape that we often see is composed mainly of architecture, but going just a bit further from the city center we are welcomed by various scenery. These various landscapes are recognized with a certain speed, if you will, depending on the means of movement.

The site is located on the side of a street that goes from downtown Gangneung to the entrance of Gangneung IC. There is an overpass lined with pine trees in front of the site, and behind it is a small hill with a community of pine trees, surrounding it like a folding screen. The open view of the front and rear, seen from the second floor is very attractive.

The project is the office building of “5D”, an interior company, and the owner wished for the building to show its own image or story on the roadside. We wanted the building to be easily recognized as a design firm, but also for it to blend in with the surrounding landscape environment. We also wanted for employees, who spend most of their day in the office, to be able to work in a happy and pleasant environment.

In order to realize the above two things, firstly, we designed a clear and simple form so that the building can be recognized immediately by cars passing the highway. The overpass is not a pedestrian space, but acts as a street only for cars that travel at high speed. This is because a person’s attention, or “speed of scenery” is fast, so we used a simple mass design and red bricks to make the building noticeable.

In addition, we designed the elevation to show the story of each space, so that it tells its own story. The curtain wall mass in the center of the building is an architectural device designed to project the clean image of the design company to the outside and to draw the surrounding landscape into the interior. The significance lies in the interior and exterior providing the richness of space to users. As a resting space for staff, the balcony communicates with the exterior environment, and we installed a folding door to allow the printing room and meeting room to be used in various ways.

We hope that the 5D building, which blends in nicely with the autumn leaves, can contribute to the existing landscape, and also for the happiness of those who use this space

도시의 가로(街路)는 다양한 풍경을 제공한다. 우리가 흔히 접하는 도심의 가로풍경은 건축물이 주를 이루고 있지만, 도심에서 살짝만 벗어나도 가로는 다양한 풍경으로 우리를 맞이한다. 이런 여러 풍경은 이동의 수단에 따라 인식에 일종의 속도를 가지게 된다.

대지는 강릉 도심에서 강릉IC로 진입하기 위해 빠져나가는 대로변에 위치하고 있다. 대지 전면에는 소나무를 가로수로 하는 고가도로가 있으며, 뒤로는 소나무 군락이 있는 나지막한 야산이 병풍처럼 대지를 감싸고 있어, 2층 높이에서 펼쳐지는 전후면의 열린 전망이 아주 매력적이다.

본 프로젝트는 “5D”라는 인테리어 회사의 사옥으로, 건축주는 건물이 가로변에서 자신만의 이미지, 혹은 이야기를 보여주고 싶어 했다. 건축가는 디자인회사 사옥으로서의 이미지를 강렬하게 인식시키되, 주변 가로환경과 어우러지는 건축물이 되기를 바랐다. 또한 하루의 대부분을 회사에서 생활하는 직원들을 위해 쾌적하면서도, 행복하게 업무를 볼 수 있도록 하고자 했다.

위 두 가지를 실현시키기 위해 첫 번째로, 고가도로변을 지나는 자동차 안에서 건물이 빠르게 인식될 수 있도록 형태를 단순하고 명쾌하게 디자인하였다. 고가도로는 보행의 공간이 아니라 오로지 속도를 내는 자동차를 위한 가로로써 작용한다. 이는 사람의 시선, 즉 “풍경의 속도”가 빠르기 때문인데, 단순한 매스 디자인과 붉은색 벽돌을 사용하여 건축물이 쉽게 인식될 수 있도록 하였다.

더불어 각 공간의 성격을 고려한 입면을 구성하여, 자신만의 이야기를 보여주고자 했다. 건물 중앙의 커튼월 매스는 디자인회사의 깨끗한 이미지를 외부로 투영하는 동시에, 주변 소나무 풍경을 내부를 끌어들이기 위해 만든 건축적 장치로서, 내외부의 소통이 사용자에게 공간의 풍요로움을 제공하는 데에 그 의미가 있다. 발코니는 직원들의 휴게 공간으로써 외부 환경과 소통할 수 있으며, 폴딩도어를 활용하여 주변의 출력실, 회의실 함께, 그 공간의 쓰임이 다양하도록 했다.
