Houses, House over House, House and House. A house where people live together

HeimHeim was not rental housing for the general public, but was a community house for nurses focusing on living “together.” It is three-story building. The first floor is a home for four family members with a yard, and the second and third floors consist of one-bed room units for residents who will be living with the family. Each mass looks as if they are all connected. The owner’s residence, the first floor, is finished with cement bricks, and a part of the mass is projected to have an attic with a gable roof. If you look at this building from a distance, the white multi-family house looks like it has been added onto the single-story gray house. The second and third floors are finished with white stucco and have two gable roofs, and some units use the flat and protruding parts of the first floor as terraces. A special space for the residents of this multi-family house is the small space between the roofs. This space, which is connected to the outside after passing through the corridor with a height up to the third floor, allows residents to feel nature. The small empty space is used for relaxation and various activities in the community.

Retrospection of an Architect 

As I work on the architecture, I imagine the finished image from the design stage. Then, as the overall concept of the building naturally comes to a conclusion, a “kind of stubbornness” may occur in choosing materials and colors for the finish. At that time, I finished the exposed concrete for the staircase. And the doors of each unit were painted dark grey, producing a monotone inside the space. I thought that the exposed concrete should only be covered with transparent protective paint allowing the original color and texture to be seen. However, the owner did not like the result. After I visited the site, I noticed that a wall, which was constructed to save the exposed side, was painted in “light pink.” However, when I went into the space, I felt warm and invigorated. The smoothly finished walls and warm bright colors seemed to bring some vitality to the interior space. In addition, each door on the second floor was painted in deep green and dark wine colors. This was a color combination which I had never thought of. “HeimHeim” was a work that made me think about things other than design. In the end, “architectural work” is not an architect’s “work” activity, but a project that has to be done “together” with many people who participate to complete it.

하임하임

집집. 집 위의 집. 집과 집. 함께, 그리고 모여 사는 집. 하임하임은 불특정 다수를 대상으로 하는 일반적인 임대 주택이 아닌, 간호사들의 공동 주거 공간이자, “함께” 살아가는 장소다.

건축물은 크게 1층과 2, 3층으로 구분된다. 1층은 전원 마당같은 외부 공간이 포함된 4인 가족을 위한 곳이며, 2층과 3층은 이 가족들과 함께 할 입주자를 위한 원룸들이 각각 배치되어 있다. 이 각각의 매스들은 서로 연결된 모습을 하고 있다. 건축주의 거주지인 1층은 시멘트 벽돌로 마감됐으며, 박공 지붕을 가진 다락공간을 가지도록 매스의 한 부분이 돌출된 모습이다. 멀리서 바라본다면, 단층의 회색 단독주택 위에 흰색의 다가구주택이 올라가 있다. 대지와 흰색 스터코로 마감된 2, 3층은 두 개의 박공 지붕으로 마감되어 있으며, 일부 집은 1층의 평평하고 돌출된 부분을 테라스로 사용한다.

이 다가구주택 거주자를 위한 특별한 공간은 지붕과 지붕 사이, 작은 공간에 있다. 3층까지 층고를 높이 띄운 복도를 지나 외부와 접하는 이곳은, 지붕이 덮이지 않아 자연 그대로를 느낄 수 있는 곳이다. 작은 공간은 거주자들의 휴식과 커뮤니티 안의 다양한 활동이 생겨나는 곳으로 쓰이고 있다.

건축가의 회고 건축을 하다보면, 설계 단계에서부터 마감 후의 이미지를 그리게 된다. 그러다보면 자연스럽게 건축물의 전체적인 콘셉트가 도출되어, 마감의 재료와 색상에는 ‘일종의 고집’같은 것이 생겨난다. 당시 나는 계단실에 노출콘크리트 마감하고, 각 세대의 출입문에는 짙은회색으로 마무리하여, 모노톤의 전체적 내부 공간을 생각하고 있었다. 노출콘크리트는 당연하게도 투명한 보호 페인트로 본연의 색과 질감을 그대로 연출하는 것이 맞다고 생각했었다. 하지만 건축주의 의견은 달랐다.

이후 현장을 방문했고, 노출된 면을 살리기 위해 공들여 시공된 벽면에는 ‘연핑크색’ 페인트가 칠해져 있었다. 막상 그 공간 속으로 들어가니 예상과 달리 느낌이 따뜻하면서도 생경했다. 매끈하게 마감된 벽면과 따뜻하고 밝은 색의 공간은 내부 공간의 어떤 활기를 가져오는 듯 했다. 뿐만 아니라 2층의 각 출입문들은 딥그린색과 짙은와인색으로 칠해져 있었다. 전혀 생각하지 못했던 색 조합 역시 이미 이곳의 일부로 자리 잡고 있었다. ‘하임하임’은 건축적으로 디자인 보다 다른 것을 생각하도록 만드는 작업물이다. 결국 ‘건축 작업’이라는 건축가의 일은 자신의 생각으로만 작업하는 ‘작품’ 활동이 아니라, 건축물이 완성되기 까지 모든 과정에 참여하는 모든 사람들과 ‘함께’행해져야 하는 일임을 크게 느낄 수 있는 프로젝트다.
