GANGMUNAE GUEST HOUSE REMODELING AND INTERIOR

A place where pine trees, the sea, and Daegwallyeong are visible Gangmun Ae Guest House was opened after the renovation of the entire building and a new interior design. The five-story building, was used as a restaurant on the first floor, a house and some guest rooms on the second floor, a guest house on the third and fourth floors, and a restaurant on the fifth floor. If the original building had cluttered colors, the newly remodeled Gangmun Ae Guest House has a simple yet clean image in black and white.

The café on the fifth floor had a dark atmosphere with somewhat outdated wooden louvers. Interior work was needed to change the overall atmosphere of the Gangmun Ae Café. First, the existing wooden louvers were cleaned after leaving only a part on the ceiling. The remaining wood grain on the ceiling tells us that the time of the building stays together here. The indirect light installed where the wall meets the ceiling creates a subtle and luxurious interior atmosphere. The existing space, from which the beautiful surrounding scenery could not be seen, was fitted with a large folding door window. Visitors can see the pine forest in front of the building and the sea spreading beyond from inside the building. On the other side, there is also a window where you can quietly enjoy the view of the Daegwallyeong Mountains. In a space that was once somewhat boring, the active and bright feeling of the guesthouse was completed by adding furniture and accessories selected by the architect and the owner. The use of the second floor has been significantly changed, and rooms and linen rooms have been added to the space that belonged to a single-family house. Additional shared shower rooms have also been constructed.

Retrospection of an Architect 

Most projects are developed in a similar situation, but within a limited budget, by coordinating between what is impossible and what is not, “Design” is recognized as a part of the overall work of architecture. Sometimes, many constraints cause the creation of an idea. For the Gangmun Ae Guest House project, I was able to address some of the concerns as an architect. I thought about the direction and vision of the business together with the owner, suggested the best design within the limited budget, and further tried to find a reasonable way through numerous variables that could occur at the construction stage. In addition, the role of the architect throughout the architectural work by coordinating between the owner and the contractor was remarkable. I also realized that the better the coordinating role was, the better the results would be. The process of thinking and selecting furniture and props to be placed in each space together was as part of the architect’s role.

강문애 게스트하우스 리모델링 및 인테리어

건축가의 회고 강문애 프로젝트의 건물은 총 5개 층이며, 1층은 일반음식점, 2층은 단독주택(일부 객실), 3, 4층은 게스트하우스(숙박시설), 5층은 휴게음식점이었다. 그 중 2층의 단독주택을 객실, 린넨실, 그리고 부족했던 공용 샤워실을 계획하는 것으로 용도변경하면서 전체적인 건물의 리모델링 및 인테리어를 수반하는 업무였다.

대부분의 프로젝트마다 비슷한 상황으로 전개되지만, 한정된 예산 내에서 가능한 부분과 그렇지 않은 부분을 조율하면서 ‘디자인’은 전체 설계 작업의 일부임을 인정하게 된다. 때로는 많은 제약들이 아이디어를 낳기도 하는데, 강문애도 5층의 경우가 그러하였다. 준공년도가 그리 오래 지나지 않았음에도 불구하고, 목재 루버로 마감된 카페는 그 공간이 가지고 있는 주변의 훌륭한 경관을 빛내주지 못하고 있었다. 전체적인 분위기 전환을 위해 기존 목재 루버가 갖고 있던 결을 천정에서는 그대로 남기고, 내부의 벽은 깨끗하게 마감을 다시 입히고, 벽과 천정이 만나는 부분에는 간접등을 넣어 고급스러움을 더하고자 하였다. 전체 건물이 가지고 있던 산만한 여러 요소들을 정리하기 위해서 색은 블랙과 화이트만을 사용하고, 나머지 가구와 소품으로 심심함을 달래보았다. 전체적으로 밝은 분위기가 완성되었고, 소나무 숲 너머로 바다를 볼 수 있는 폴딩도어 반대편에는 아름다운 대관령을 감상할 수 있는 경관 창을 나란히 두었다.

강문애는 건축가의 역할에 대해 고민했던 바를 일정 부분 실천할 수 있었던 프로젝트였다. 사업의 방향과 비전을 함께 고민하고, 한정된 예산 안에서 가장 최선의 디자인을 제안하며, 나아가 공사 단계에서 발생할 수 있는 여러 변수들에 대응하면서 합리적인 방법을 찾고, 건축주와 시공자 사이를 조율하는 것까지, 건축 행위 전반에 걸친 건축가의 적절한 개입이 결과물에 미치는 영향이 어떠한 지를 확인할 수 있는 작업이었다. 또한 보통 다른 프로젝트와 달리 각 공간에 배치될 가구와 소품 하나까지 함께 고민하고, 선정하면서 평소의 작업에서는 굳이 세세히 보지 않았던 요소들까지 두루 살펴보게 되는 계기가 된 프로젝트였다.
