The “Zipdaesung” was a multiplex housing we were commissioned in Shindaebang-dong right next to Boramae Park. It built under the basic conditions that above all, the possible maximum area had to be secured from the small site about 186㎡ as well as the site condition of pentangular shape.

The client, who had already received several design proposals from other architects, happened to have had received proposals in common for a diagonal building with an inclined plane complying with the limitations to receiving sunshine due to facing north to secure the maximum volume. He did not want a diagonal shaped building design, and demanded for a design of a multiplex house which is profitable, with a differentiated design.

In this project, we were inspired by the served space and servant space concepts showcased in Louis Kahn’s Pruchter House and the Richards Medical Research Laboratories and arranged the 5 rectangles parallel to each side of the pentangular land by overlapping them. We first arranged the served space such as bedrooms and living rooms in the rectangular space, and then arranged the servant space such as kitchens, restrooms and dressing rooms so as to maximize the efficiency of the interior space.

From the quantitative aspect, rather than the qualitative aspect of the space, the total volume is smaller for the inclined part when compared to diagonal line type buildings. But the outdoor terraces on each floor and the exterior stairs are arranged in these terraces, thereby decreasing the common area and the area for exclusive use of each household is increased.

Also, through the brick handrail wall, the house would have the volume of the size beyond the due north access to sunlight diagonal line limitation, and due to this, it would also become a bigger building than a diagonal building in appearance. The bright-colored brick facade emphasizes the formativeness through the Shadows made of various openings.

Buildings set-back terraced due to the due north sunlight diagonal line limitation are very common, but the appearance of the building stacked with the cuboids differing in the directions and heights arranged parallel to each side of the pentangular land is the unique image created by the unfavorable condition of the land and creates the differentiated formativeness that cannot be easily borrowed. Due to the location of the building located in the hilly, the adjacent Boramae Park can be viewed from the terrace of each floor.

다섯 볼륨이 섞이며 만들어진 집, 집대성

신대방동 고지대에 위치한 “집대성”은 협소한 오각형 대지에 들어선 다세대주택이다. 건축주는 최대 볼륨을 확보하기 위해 정북일조사선제한을 따르는 경사면을 가진 사선형 건물을 타 건축가들에게 여러 번 제안 받았으나, 사선형 건물 디자인을 원하지 않았다. 아뜰리에준 건축사사무소는 건축주가 원하는 최대 볼륨을 만족시키면서, 이곳에 들어설 수 있는 차별화된 설계안을 제안했다.

건축물은 오각형 대지의 각 변에 평행한 5개의 직사각형을 중첩시키고, 그 높이와 크기 별로 강약조절이 된 모습을 하고있다. 이 디자인은 루이스 칸의 작품인 프루흐터 하우스와 리처드 의학연구동의 서브드 공간(Served Space)와 서번트 공간(Servcant Space)에서 영향을 받은 것이다. 거실과 침실에 해당되는 서브드 공간은 직사각형으로 우선 배치되고, 부엌, 화장실 등의 서번트 공간은 삼각형, 사다리꼴의 자투리 공간을 채우고 있다. 이는 최대면적을 확보하기 위해 대지의 형태를 맹목적으로 따르는 비효율적인 평면을 거부하고, 열악한 조건에서 공간의 질을 높이기 위한 건축가의 세심한 배려다. 각 층마다 마련된 테라스는 보라매공원을 조망하기에도 알맞다.

이렇게 다섯 볼륨이 섞이며 만들어진 “집대성”은 밝은 색의 벽돌로 마감되어 건축물에 드리우는 그림자가 더욱 뚜렷하게 보인다. 이 그림자들은 건축물의 조형성을 돋보이게 한다.
