White Brick House is a detached house located in Gachang-myeon which is on the outskirts of Daegu. It is nestled on a warm site where the sun always enters deeply. Centered around the house are landscapes of open fields to the south and north, Mt. Chungnyungsan to the east, and Mt. Choejeongsan to the west. Here, where the land is mostly flat and village roads stretch to the east and south sides, houses of old age sit here and there like old men. The clients are a young couple with two young children, who wanted a space for the children to jump and play and a small hobby space to make a pottery and earthenware.

First, the site was divided into two parts, south and north. On the north side is a workshop for personal activities and a parking space that can be used for small projects; a residential space for the client couple is planned on the south side. One of the reasons for forming the north workshop with two box forms that have low floor heights, then separating it while maintaining a certain distance from the south residential section with a high floor height, was to show consideration for the amount of sunshine of the neighbors to the north. The ground floor includes a spacious living and kitchen space for guests, a courtyard leading to the living room. The first floor is separated spaces for the privacy of the family, and has a small living room and bedroom exclusively for the family.

A piloti structure is used for the courtyard on the ground floor, which leads to the living room, allowing the users to avoid rain and strong sunshine during outdoor activities. The family can enjoy a variety of activities in this roofed courtyard, such as barbecue parties and swimming in a portable pool for children in the summer. In addition, all living rooms, bedrooms and family space are oriented to the south, ensuring natural light. The north corridor on the first floor, is always bright and warm with constant light. As it is a house with high floor height, we made sure to take care of insulation for heating and cooling. An external insulation system, which satisfies the legal standard, and a thermal insulation method using water-based soft foam were applied to this house. The high-efficiency triple windows and separate boilers for the ground and first floors were installed. A heat exchanger that circulates outside air without opening windows is also adopted to minimize heat loss.

하얀벽돌집

하안벽돌집은 대구 근교 가창면에 위치한 단독주택으로, 항상 깊숙이 햇살이 들어오는 따뜻한 대지에 자리 잡았다. 집을 중심으로 남, 북측에는 넒은 들판, 동측으로는 척령산, 서측으로는 최정산의 풍경이 자리한다. 경사가 거의 없고 동측과 남측으로 마을 도로가 지나가는 이 곳은 세월을 머금은 주택들이 곳곳에 터줏대감처럼 자리를 잡고 있었다. 건축주는 슬하에 어린 두 자녀가 있는 젊은 부부였다. 부부는 아이들이 마음껏 뛰어놀 수 있는 공간과 도자기와 토기를 만들 수 있는 작은 취미공간을 갖고 싶어 했다.

먼저 대지는 남, 북측 두 부분으로 영역을 나누었다. 북측으로는 개인 활동을 위한 공방과 작은 작업을 겸할 수 있는 주차장, 남측으로는 건축주 부부의 주거공간을 배치했다. 북측의 공방을 낮은 층고를 가진 두 개의 박스형태로 구성하면서 높은 층고를 가진 남측 주거부분과 일정거리를 유지하여 분리시킨 이유는 북측 이웃주민의 일조량에 대한 작은 배려이다. 남측의 주거공간은 외부인을 초대할 수 있는 넓은 거실과 주방 공간, 그리고 거실로 이어지는 마당, 가족의 프라이버시를 위한 별도의 공간들로 계획됐다. 1층은 거실과 주방, 거실로 이어지는 마당 공간이 자리하며, 2층은 가족만 사용하는 작은 거실과 침실이 있다.

1층의 외부마당은 필로티 구조를 활용하여 밖에서도 비와 강한 햇살을 피할 수 있도록 계획됐다. 거주자 가족은 이 지붕이 있는 마당에서 바비큐 파티, 여름철 어린 자녀를 위한 이동식 수영장 등 다양한 활동을 할 수 있다. 또한, 모든 거실과 침실, 가족을 위한 공간은 남향으로 배치되어 자연채광이 확보됐다. 북측 채광이 스며드는 높은 2층의 복도는 일정한 빛이 흘러내려 항상 밝으면서도 따뜻한 분위기를 갖는다. 높은 층고를 가진 단독주택인 만큼, 냉난방 보온과 단열성 부분도 놓치지 않았다. 법적인 기준을 만족시키는 외단열 공법과 수성연질폼을 이용한 내단열 공법이 모두 이 집에 적용됐다. 뿐만 아니라 고효율 삼중 창호와 1, 2층에 분리된 별도의 보일러를 사용했다. 창을 열지 않아도 외부 공기가 순환되는 열교환기도 채택하여 열손실을 최소화했다.
