Junghwa-dong Golmog house, a multi-family house leading to the stairs, between alleys The blocks of standardized land sized about 100㎡ in Junghwa-dong are proof that the neighborhood is an old planned city. The neighborhood, which was planned as a neighborhood for detached houses, spent many years being transformed from one of detached houses to multi-family houses, so its landscape is probably different from when it was first formed. As seen in the last scene of the Korean drama series “Reply 1988”, Ssangmun-dong was recognized as a neighborhood to leave someday, and the houses rapidly grew old. Not long after, small changes began to take place in the neighborhood. With maximum gross floor areas and number of houses desired by different individuals, the neighborhood is changing bit by bit, like dentures that do not fit.

We decided to locate the house on the site as if it were stepping away from the road. The border between the road and the house was removed. The “Golmog(It means ‘alley’ in korean.)” from outside runs deep into the building, reaching each home. The “Golmog” created in this building captures the image of the neighborhood where several houses are gathered. It is like a landscape where you meet your house and the neighbor’s house as you go up the stairs of a poor hillside village. If you walk along the “Golmog”, you will pass neighborhood facilities on the ground floor and go up to the first floor from the far end of the house. Climbing the corner in front of the client’s house reveals the second floor, which has room for two families. The third floor has a front courtyard for two families. The “Golmog” is designed to wrap around the outside of the house and allows users to climb each floor. The changing landscape of each floor that is visible as you turn the corner provides a small pleasure as you go up to the third floor. Thanks to the “Golmog” attached to the exterior of the house, every household has a reasonable distance from the neighboring houses. In addition, the privacy of the occupants was protected by window plans that protect you from the gazes of passersby.

As in the words of Elton John’s song ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, like Dorothy’s yellow brick road that she walked with three companions towards Emerald City, it’s a laborious home with no elevator on a small plot of land, but it provides small pleasures to its residents.

중화동 골목집

골목 사이, 계단으로 이어지는 다가구주택 중화동의 약 100㎡의 규격화된 필지의 모습은 동네가 오래된 계획 도시임을 말해준다. 단독주택 단지로 계획된 이 동네는 세월을 보내며 단독주택에서 다가구로 몸집을 불려가다 보니 동네 풍경은 처음의 아기자기한 모습과 달라졌을 터이다. 드라마 ‘응답하라 1988’ 속 쌍문동의 마지막 모습처럼 언젠간 떠나야 할 동네로 인식되면서, 집은 나이를 먹고 빠른 속도로 늙어갔다. 대규모의 재개발이 아닌 ‘각자도생(各自圖生)’이 시작되고 오래지 않아 이 동네는 꿈틀대기 시작했다. 각자가 욕망하는 최대 용적과 집의 개수로 입에 맞지 않는 틀니를 억지로 끼워 넣듯 그렇게 동네의 모습이 조금씩 달라지고 있다.

집은 가급적 길에서 물러나 있는 것처럼 대지에 앉히기로 했다. 길과 집의 경계는 없앴다. 밖에서부터 이어지는 “골목길”을 건축물의 깊숙한 곳까지 이어서, 각자의 집에 다다르도록 만든다. 이 건물 안에 만들어진 “골목길”은 하나의 집이 아닌 여러 집이 모여 사는 동네의 모습을 담아낸다. 마치 달동네 계단 골목을 오르다보면 나의 집과 옆집을 함께 만나는 하나의 풍경같이. “골목길”을 따라 걸으면, 1층 근린생활시설 앞을 지나 집의 안쪽 끝에서 2층으로 오르게 된다. 2층 건축주 집 앞에서 모퉁이를 돌아 오르면 두 가구가 살 수 있는 3층이 나타난다. 4층에는 두 가구를 위한 앞마당이 마련되어 있다. “골목길”은 집의 바깥쪽을 감싸면서 각 층을 오를 수 있도록 만들어져 있는데, 모퉁이를 돌 때마다 보이는 각 층의 달라지는 풍경이 꼭대기인 4층까지 오르는 길에서 느낄 수 있는 작은 즐거움이다. 집의 바깥쪽으로 붙어 있는 “골목길” 덕분에 가구마다 인접 대지의 집들과 적당한 거리를 가질 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라, 외부의 시선으로부터 벗어난 창문 계획은 거주자의 사생활도 보호한다.

엘튼 존의 ‘Goodbye yellow brick road’라는 노래에 나오듯, 도로시가 세 명의 동반자와 에메랄드 시를 향해 걷던 노란 벽돌길처럼, 작은 대지에 흔한 엘리베이터조차 없는 수고스러운 집이지만, 사는 이들에게는 소소한 즐거움이 발견되는 집이다.
