The client couple took us to a green tea farm that can only be seen after ascending along the farm road across the river and going past the farthest house. They had purchased land after settling their city life and coming down here in 2015, and that they wanted to build a house now. That was winter 2017. It was a space with a level difference of about 4m, and it had a land form that could draw architect’s interest. The requirements of the couple were specific. Firstly, they did not desire a large area. However, since they were running a study room for children in Hwagae there, they said that “We would like for children to be able to take lessons at a better place”. Secondly, they wanted a building shape that consists of sides that are straight as if they were sliced with a knife. The third point was considering a Gudeulbang (a room with underground heating) as well as the construction cost.

As the requirements, I decided to design a simple and efficient house. Since the natural environment of the surrounding was extraordinary, not only the habitability of the interior space but also the sensual area were made to be extended to the exterior, even though the physical area is small, with a suitable window plan from each space. As for the overall shape of the mass, we aimed to enrich the living room space, which will also serve as a study room for children, and avoid going against the lines of the surrounding mountain shape by having the living room maintain a high ceiling height through the placement of a level difference to the roof. So, the external insulation system of STO was chosen as the exterior material for a building form consisting of straight sides, which increases the building’s general degree of completion and was one of the clint’s requirements. The external insulation, commonly used as dryvit, are easily contaminated. Of course, the nature of the materials may be a cause but the biggest cause of contamination is the absence of detail. Beads are used around the windows, at the lower part of the facade, at corners where sides meet, etc., in order to decrease the contamination.

As for the plan, the living room, kitchen, Gudeulbang (couple’s bedroom), bathroom and utility room were arranged on the first floor, and on the second floor, which is reached after ascending a staircase consisting of cantilevers, the guest room and sitting study room, library, dressing room and bathroom were planned. During the base excavation, the client were found rocks while digging into the ground of the enterance area. Therefore, the section plan was altered, and the entry into the living room from the front door gained a level difference of ascending and descending. Consequentially, a space that children enjoy was created.

The meaning of Sam Yeon Jae(然緣姸) is a house imbued with three (Sam) ‘Yeon’ letters with the following definitions: nature, relationship and beauty. Here, the Yean, which means “nature”, contained the desire of the house becoming a house that harmonizes with nature, and other Yeon, which means “relationship”, contained the gratitude towards the relationships formed after returning to Hwagae since the house was able to be completed with their help. Finally, the Yeon, which means “beauty”, was brrowed from the name of the client’s wife, and this was a gift celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary this year.

삼연재

건축주 부부는 우리를 하동군 화개면 강 건너 농로를 따라 올라가 가장 끝 집을 지나야 보이는 녹차밭으로 데려갔다. 2015년에 자신들의 도시생활을 정리하고 내려와 이 땅을 구입했으며, 이제는 집을 짓고 싶다 했다. 그때가 2017년 겨울이었다. 그곳은 약 4m의 레벨차가 있는 땅이었으며 건축가로서의 욕심을 발동하게 하는 대지 형태였다. 부부의 요구사항은 명확했다. 하나, 큰 면적을 원하지 않았다. 다만, 그곳에서 화개 아이들을 위한 공부방을 운영하고 있었기에 “아이들이 보다 좋은 공간에서 수업을 받을 수 있도록 하고 싶다” 했다. 둘, 칼로 자른 듯 반듯한 면들로 이루어진 건물 형태를 원했다. 셋, 구들방, 그리고 공사비를 고려하는 것이다.

요구에 따라 담백하고 효율적인 주택을 설계하고자 했다. 주변 자연환경이 좋은 곳이기에 실내 공간의 거주성뿐 아니라 각 공간의 적절한 창 계획으로 물리적인 면적은 작지만 체감하는 면적은 외부로 확장되도록 했다.

전체적인 매스의 형태는 지붕에 단 차이를 두어 거실이 높은 층고를 유지하도록 하고, 아이들의 공부방 역할을 겸하게 될 거실 공간을 만들어서 주변 산세의 선형을 거스르지 않고자 했다. 이렇게 건물의 전체적인 완성도를 높이고 건축주의 요구사항 중 하나였던 반듯한 면들로 이루어진 건물 형태를 위해 STO사의 외단열 시스템으로 외장재를 선택했다. 드라이비트(Dryvit)로 통용되는 외단열 시스템은 많은 분들이 오염이 잘 된다고 생각한다. 물론 자재의 특성도 있겠지만 오염이 되는 가장 큰 이유는 디테일의 부재다. 창 주변, 입면의 하부, 면과 면이 만나는 모서리 등에 비드(Bead)를 적절히 사용하여 오염도를 낮췄다.

평면은 지상 1층에 거실, 주방, 구들방(부부침실), 화장실, 다용도실을 배치하고, 캔틸레버로 이루어진 계단을 올라와 도달하는 지상 2층에는 손님방 겸 좌식 공부방, 서재, 드레스룸, 화장실을 계획했다. 기초 터파기를 하는 중 현관 부분의 땅에서 암(巖)이 나와 더 이상 파지지 않았다. 이러한 이유로 단면계획을 변경하고, 집 현관에서 거실로의 진입 부분에는 오르내림의 단 차이가 생겨났다. 결과적으로는 아이들이 재미있어 하는 공간이 만들어졌다.

삼연재는(然緣姸)는 자연(그럴) 연, 인연 연, 고울 연, 연자가 세 개 깃든 집이라는 뜻이다. 여기서 자연(그럴) 연은 집을 짓는 데 자연과 잘 어우러진 집이 되기를 바람을, 인연 연은 화개로 귀촌해 맺은 인연들의 도움이 있었기에 집을 지을 수 있었고, 그것에 대한 고마움을 담았다. 또한, 고울 연은 건축주 아내의 이름에서 가져온 것으로 올해 결혼 10주년을 맞이한 건축주에게 주는 작은 선물같은 것이다.
