Drawing on the V&A’s world-class collections of art, design and performance, this is the museum’s first permanent home for its material relating to comedy. ‘Laughing Matters:The State of a Nation’ reflect on the role of humour in debates around identity, empire and power over the past two hundred years. Four thematic sections are arranged in four richly variegated wallmounted displays, arranged in cellular cabinets that extend from each corner of the room.
A major inspiration for the decoration and treatment for Gallery55 is the work of celebrated British interior design David Hicks. His work suggests a particular blend of traditional values and modern invention, such as the suggestion of Tudor ‘timbers’ as an aesthetic device alongside modern, utilitarian tiles. Bold colours and intense patterns produce a contemporary impact while referencing historic styles, particularly from British design and architectural eras.
The V&A has also redesigned and reinvigorated Room121 to create a museum living room. Located directly above ‘Laughing Matters: The State of a Nation’, this space looks into the room below. With comfortable seating, toys, games, and plugs for phones and laptops, it provide a place for visitors to relax and re-charge their batteries. While in Gallery55 the arched alcoves act as a vehicle for display, in Room121 a corner alcove unit becomes a space of inhabitation, allowing individuals, or a couple to sit in a semi-enclosed space. Desks at different heights for adults and children occupy another corner.
'웃음 소재 : 국가의 상태’ 전시장
V&A의 세계적 수준의 예술, 디자인 및 공연 콜렉션을 기반으로 하는 이곳은 희극과 관련된 자료를 보유한 최초의 박물관이다. ‘웃음소재 : 국가의 상태’는 지난 200년 동안의 정체성, 제국, 권력에 관한 논쟁에서 유머의 역할을 반영한다. 4개의 주제별 섹션은 각 모서리의 화려한 벽걸이형 디스플레이로 배치되어 있다.
Gallery55의 주요 영감은 영국의 유명한 인테리어 디자이너인 데이비드 힉스(David Hicks)의 작품에서 얻었다. 그의 작품은 전통적인 가치와 현대 발명의 특별한 조화를 제안한다. 대담한 색상과 강렬한 패턴은 특히 영국 디자인과 건축의 역사적인 스타일을 참조하면서 현대적인 영향을 만들어 낸다.
V&A는 또한 Room121을 재설계하고 재활성화 했다. ‘웃음소재 : 국가의 상태’ 전시장 바로 위에 위치한 이 공간은 Gellary55를 들여다 볼 수 있다. 편안한 좌석, 장난감, 게임, 휴대폰 및 노트북용 전원 플러그가 구비되어 있어 방문객들로 하여금 휴식을 취하고 재충전 할 수 있게 한다.
Gallery55에서는 아치형 벽장이 전시공간 역할을 하는 반면, Room121에서는 코너의 공간이 머무를 수 있는 공간이 되어 혼자 온 사람이나 커플이 반 밀폐된 공간에 앉을 수 있다. 또한 성인과 어린이를 위한 높이가 다른 책상이 각 모퉁이를 차지하고 있다.
