De Beauvoir Block

London’s workspaces have transformed in the last decade. With the boom in freelancers, tech startups, small creative agencies and other entrepreneurial businesses, there has been an explosion in shared office spaces, start-up hothouses, and working hubs housing multiple companies and individuals. The ‘one business = one building’ set-up is becoming rarer by the day. De Beauvoir Block in Hackney is a case in point.

The one unit, Sella Concept were first asked to work on soon grew to three – the Block’s boardroom, its co-working space and the large, open café, lounge and reception area that now acts as meeting point, lunch venue break-out space and general social hub for everyone working in De Beauvoir Block. Taking the silky, smooth finish of a newly plastered wall as the starting point to develop the colour palette and atmosphere, Gayle and Tatjana explored ideas, plotted layouts, drew up furniture designs and, when construction was finally complete, brought their vision to life on site.

Around a central bar (operated by local hero De Beauvoir Deli), a melange of long wooden tables, early 20th-century plantation chairs, sofa-lined ‘living room’ zones, grid-like bookcases, bistro-esque dining areas, and ‘laptop and latte’ counters make the space extremely adaptable over the course of the day. With plaster-pink brickwork, smooth concrete floors, fresh colour accents and an abundance of greenery and cane, it’s a cross between a modernist living room and the kind of buzzing day-time hangout you’d find on the streets of Los Angeles. The long tables, topped with raw-edged slabs of wood, seem to float thanks to their inset industrial steel legs. Lighting has been carefully considered to complement the natural light that floods in through huge warehouse windows on either side of the room.

보부아르 블록

런던의 사무실은 지난 10년간 프리랜서의 증가, 기술 스타트업, 작은 규모의 창의적 기업 그리고 또 다른 기업의 사업들로 인해 공유 사무 공간, 스타트업 핫 하우스(온실), 여러 회사와 개인을 수용하는 작업 허브 등의 폭발이 일어나고 있다. ‘하나의 사업 = 하나의 건물’ 이라는 설정은 오늘날 거의 찾아보기 힘들다. 해크니(Hackney)에 있는 보부아르 블록은 이러한 점에서 중요한 사례이다.

셀라 콘셉트가 처음 작업을 요청받은 공간은 보부아르 블록의 이사회실, 공동작업공간, 크고 열린 카페, 만남의 장소, 점심식사 및 휴식공간, 보부아르 블록에서 일하는 모든 사람들을 위한 사회적 허브 역할을 하는 라운지, 그리고 리셉션 영역 등으로 확장되었다. 색채 팔레트와 분위기 조성을 위한 출발점으로 벽에 비단같이 부드러운 마감을 사용했고, 게일(Gayle)과 타트야나(Tatjana)는 아이디어를 탐구하고 레이아웃을 계획하고 가구 디자인을 만들었다.

가운데에 있는 바(bar) 주변의 긴 목재 테이블의 혼합, 20세기 초반의 농장 의자, 소파가 놓인 거실, 격자형 책장, 비스트로식 식사 공간, 그리고‘ 노트북과 라떼’ 카운터는 이 공간을 하루 일과 동안 매우 적응력 있게 만든다. 석고로 된 분홍색 벽돌, 부드러운 콘크리트 바닥, 신선한 색감의 강조, 그리고 초록색 잎과 줄기의 풍성함으로 가장 현대적인 거실과 LA 거리에서 발견할 수 있는 와글거림의 장소가 된다. 조명은 실내로 들어오는 자연광을 보완하도록 매우 신중하게 고려됐다.
