ZIGZAG HOUSE

The site is a land on a quiet beach in Tongyeong. It is a sloped terrain with a 12m height difference, as well as a seascape that blends with the mountains to the south. The client was a teacher near retirement, and they wanted to reside there and run a farmhouse pension. They requested a small but comfortable pension with a pool, and a space where the beach can be variously enjoyed. They wanted their house to be small, have a yard, and be separated from the pension. The project began with the question: How should the relationship between the seascape and the house, and the relationship between the ordinary life and extraordinary life meet?

The zigzag form of the building obtained from the condition of the inclined terrain reflects the site’s flow of force. As it is constantly organized from the relationship with the seascape, diverse places are created throughout the site. The programs of the floors were separated using the 12m high terrain, and terraces were created on each floor. The linearity of the twisted natural terrain becomes the power of creating a zigzag form as the masses of each floor are warped. The spaces between the created masses and the terrace spaces are combined as if the building’s interior and exterior are permeated, showing a landscapized building.

As the architecture becomes the landscape and the landscape becomes the architecture, a middle boundary point between architecture and landscape is created. This building that is like a boundary point portrays a landscape of peculiarity as the difference created from moving up and down along the terrain. In other words, if some places shrink and gain cohesiveness of a strong gaze that includes the landscape, some places stretch out and expand the force that forms a relationship with the landscape. What is notable here is the fact that the extraordinariness of traveling and the spaces of various levels created by the terrain work simultaneously. Thus spaces have the potential to generate various events. Just as if it is a place where the ordinariness of residing and the extraordinariness of traveling are organized into a new relationship.

Everyone thinks of an extraordinary life in an ordinary life. What is a house? Here, the house wants to exist not as a machine that efficiently performs the functions of an ordinary life, but as a medium that variously communicates the meaning of an ordinary life. In the terrain and landscape, the architecture is ceaselessly dismantled by its owner and guests, as well as its ordinariness and extraordinariness, and is escaped as a new organization. While communicating numerous meanings, and with the accumulated memories of time, architecture will be able to become the object of meaning.

지그재그 하우스

대지는 통영의 한적한 바닷가의 땅이다. 남쪽으로 산들과 어우러진 바다 풍경이 보이고 12m 높이 차가 있는 경사진 지형이다. 클라이언트는 몇 년 후 은퇴를 앞둔 선생님으로 본인이 거주하면서 농가형 펜션을 운영하고자 했다. 풀장을 가진 펜션이면서, 작지만 편안하고 다양하게 바다를 즐길 수 있는 공간을 요구했다. 자신의 집은 작고 마당을 둔 곳으로 펜션과는 분리된 곳이길 원했다. ‘바다 풍경과 집의 관계, 그리고 일상과 탈일상의 관계가 어떻게 만나야 하는가?’란 질문으로 프로젝트는 시작됐다.

경사 지형의 조건에서 얻어낸 건물의 지그재그 형태는 대지가 가진 힘의 흐름을 반영한다. 계속해서 바다 풍경과의 관계에서 조직되어 대지 전체에 다양한 장소를 생성한다. 12m 높이의 지형을 이용하여 층별 프로그램을 분리하고 층층이 테라스를 만들었다. 비틀어진 자연 지형의 선형은 층층의 매스가 틀어져 지그재그의 형태를 만드는 동력이 된다. 생성된 매스들 사이 공간과 테라스 공간은 건물의 내부와 외부가 스며들 듯 합쳐져 풍경화된 건축을 보여준다.

건축은 풍경이 되고 풍경은 건축이 되면서 건축과 풍경의 중간 경계점이 만들어진다. 이러한 경계점 같은 건축물은 지형을 따라 오르내리면서 발생하는 차이로 특이성의 풍경을 연출한다. 즉 어떤 곳은 수축되어 풍경을 담는 강한 시선의 응집력을 가진다면, 어떤 곳은 펼쳐져 풍경과 관계 맺는 힘이 확장된다. 이때 주목할 점은 여행이라는 탈일상과 지형이 만드는 다양한 레벨의 공간이 동시에 작동한다는 점이다. 이에 따라 공간은 다양한 사건들을 발생시킬 수 있는 잠재력을 가진다. 거주의 일상과 여행의 탈일상이 새로운 관계로 조직되는 장소인 것처럼 말이다.

우리가 살면서 누구나 일상 속에서 탈일상을 생각하게 된다. 집이란 무엇일까? 여기서 집은 일상의 기능을 효율적으로 수행하는 기계가 아니라 일상의 의미를 다양하게 소통시키는 매체로서 존재하기를 원한다. 지형과 풍경 속에서 건축은 주인과 손님으로 일상과 탈일상으로 끊임없는 해체되고 새로운 조직으로 탈주된다. 이렇게 수많은 의미를 소통시키면서 시간의 의한 축적된 기억으로 건축은 의미의 대상이 될 수 있을 것이다.
