This project proposes the identity of the Faculty of Architecture with an element called a ‘Link’. The element is divided into four: a ‘Creative Link’, which is a variable space that will create creative ideas and cultures, a ‘Community Link’, a student-centric community space where various exchanges and communications will take place, a ‘Cozy Link’, a space that emits coziness as it is surrounded by green nature, and a ‘Connection Link’, an organic connection space between the existing Faculty of Architecture and the Extension Building. These four links are closely related to each other, and are created as a combined space for the Department of Architecture as well as all students of Korea National University of Transportation.
The Architecture Building is located on a straight line from the main gate, and is at the center of the campus. At the existing Architecture Building, a sense of security and comfort could be felt as the surrounding large trees embraced the building. This project presents a new Architecture Building that becomes a part of nature by taking advantage of these characteristics of the existing Architecture Building. The green belt of the building’s surrounding was extended into the site and attracted to the building, and with a room environment plan that overlooks the green colors, the students’ creative ideas were induced. On the first floor of the existing Architecture Building, a multi-purpose hall where exhibitions, information, publicity, lectures, etc. can be held was reconstructed.
The extended building is separated into the design rooms area and the professors’ offices space. The design rooms area is a student-centered community space where design, discussion and relaxation take place. The design studios of the second and third floors are connected to the hall on the first floor through corridors. The studios, where the creative design works of architecture students are done, are variable spaces. The space, made of variable walls, is flexibly used in consideration of the education operation method, student scales, etc. The first floor hall is entirely made of glass, allowing the exterior landscape to be seen even from the design rooms of the second and third floors.
The deck of the professors’ offices area as well, serves as a space of relaxation and communication that is connected to the exterior. The circulation that connects the existing building and the Extension Building was planned to be safe and convenient. The existing Architecture Building and the Extension Building are connected through the first floor’s exterior courtyard and the second and third floor bridges. The second and third floor bridges are used as external community decks, and can also be used as a space of communication in addition to playing the role of a simple passage.
Considering future enlargements, a space, structure and equipment system that allows vertical expansion are also provided. For the harmony with the existing building, red bricks and traditional bricks were used as the materials for the elevation. A dynamic facade that enables visual communication while ensuring the space’s inner and outer openness was also embodied.
본 프로젝트는 링크(Link)라는 요소로 건축관의 아이덴티티를 제안한다. 요소는 창의적인 아이디어와 문화를 만들어낼 가변적 공간인 ‘크리에이티브 링크’, 다양한 교류와 소통이 이루어지는 학생 중심의 커뮤니티 공간인 ‘커뮤니티 링크’, 푸르른 자연에 둘러싸여 아늑함을 주는 공간인 ‘코지 링크’, 기존 건축관과 증축관의 유기적 연결 공간인 ‘커넥션 링크’로 구분된다.
이 네 가지 연결고리는 서로 긴밀하게 관계 맺으며 건축과와 교통대 학생을 위한 통합 공간으로 탄생한다. 건축관은 정문으로부터 곧게 뻗은 직선상에 위치하며, 캠퍼스 중심이다. 기존 건축관은 근처의 울창한 나무들이 건물을 감싸 안고 있어 안정감과 아늑함을 느낄 수 있었다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 기존 건축관의 특징을 살려서 자연의 일부로 자리 잡는 새로운 건축관을 제시한다. 건물 주변의 녹지를 대지 안으로 연장하여 건물까지 끌어들이고, 녹색을 바라보는 실 환경 계획으로 학생들의 창의적인 아이디어를 이끌어낸다. 기존 건축관 1층은 학과 행사를 위한 전시, 안내, 홍보, 강의 등이 가능한 다목적홀이 개축됐다.
증축된 건물은 설계실 영역과 교수연구실 공간으로 나뉜다. 설계실 영역은 설계·토론·휴식이 이뤄지는 학생 중심의 커뮤니티 공간이다. 2층과 3층의 설계 스튜디오는 복도를 통해 1층 홀과 연결된다. 건축과 학생들의 창의적인 설계 작업이 이뤄지는 스튜디오는 가변형 공간이다. 가변형 벽으로 만들어진 공간은 교육 운영방식과 학생 규모 등을 고려하여 유연하게 이용된다. 1층의 홀은 통유리로 만들어져 2, 3층의 설계실에서도 외부의 풍경을 바라볼 수 있다.
교수연구실 영역의 데크도 외부와 연결된 휴식과 소통 공간의 역할을 한다. 기존 건물과 증축관은 연결하는 동선은 안전하면서도 편리하게 계획됐다. 기존 건축관과 증축관은 1층 외부 중정과 2, 3층 브리지를 통해 연결된다. 2, 3층의 브리지는 외부 커뮤니티 데크로 쓰이며, 단순한 통로의 역할이 아닌 소통의 공간으로 이용 가능하다. 추후 확장을 고려하여 수직 증축이 가능한 공간 및 구조, 설비 시스템도 마련되어 있다. 입면에 쓰이는 재료는 기존 건물과 조화를 위해 적벽돌과 전벽돌이 사용됐다. 공간의 내외부 개방감을 확보하면서 시각적 소통이 가능한 다이나믹한 파사드도 구현됐다.
