Montreal-based yh2 introduces TRIPTYCH, a three-pavilion residence carefully nestled in lakeside surroundings. The house, with its crisp lines and sober palette, was built on a sloping site overlooking a small lake in the Laurentian Mountains, one hundred kilometres from Montreal. The architects designed this building with a classical triptych in mind. It features a central piece, with direct views of Lac St-Cyr, and two side pavilions meant to be in more intimate contact with the nearby trees. The project is about the idea of fragmentation; it evolved from the desire to integrate three discrete shapes among existing trees on naturally sloping grounds.

Each one of the three volumes sets the stage for a specific natural tableau, framed by the building’s geometry. The roofs, which slope up in three directions from the centre of the house, accentuate the views. The kitchen and an adjoining office occupy the central block with generous openings towards the lake. The living room is accessed through a glass link, located east. The room’s highest point is at the window and attracts the eye towards the sky. The master bedroom, exposed to the morning sun, is directly below the living room and sits firmly on the ground thanks to the site’s natural slope. It is reached through a sculptural staircase that appears to be floating in the air with its suspended last step.

Looking west, a second side pavilion is set at a slight angle from the rest of the house. It allows for separate quarters available for friends and guests. Located in close proximity to the house’s main entrance, the guest suite is more private than the rest of the building and is signalled by a switch in floor materials, from hardwood to polished concrete. The interior parking garage and a secondary entrance are located below. The three pavilions are linked together through two glassed-in passageways, which create a formal separation between the project’s main elements. The front door is discreetly inserted in the passageway leading to the guest suite. The entrance area is lined with the same material as that used on the facades, blurring the boundaries between interiors and exteriors. On the opposite side of the central pavilion, the passageway which leads to the living room doubles as a dining space and is totally open to the outside. Night lighting is provided through a suspended aluminum ceiling, which has been carefully cut to create a sensation of being under a forest canopy.

TRIPTYCH features mostly natural materials. The facades are sheathed with Eastern cedar planks, treated to appear weathered by time. Interior walls and ceilings are either gypsum board or white cedar while the floors are white oak or polished concrete. Wide patio doors, with black aluminum casings, frame the ever-changing views. A patio area extends from the kitchen and dining spaces towards the lake. The building’s geometry creates a theatrical stage for the surrounding nature.

몬트리올에 기반을 둔 yh2는 호숫가 주변에 신중하게 자리 잡고 있는 3개의 레지던스인 TRIPTYCH를 소개한다. 선명한 선과 수수함이 있는 이 집은 몬트리올에서 100 킬로미터 떨어진 로렌시아(Laurentian) 산맥의 작은 호수가 내려다 보이는 경사지에 지어졌다. 건축가는 이 건물을 고전적으로 석장이 이어진 그림(triptych)처럼 디자인했다. 그것은 Lac St-Cyr를 직접 내다 볼 수 있는 중앙부와, 근처의 나무들과 더 친밀하게 접촉하는 두 개의 측면 전시관을 특징으로 한다. 이 프로젝트는 조각화에 관한 것이다; 이는 자연적으로 경사진 땅에 있는 기존의 나무들 사이에 세 개의 분리된 모양을 통합하려는 열망에서 발전했다.

3개의 각기 다른 볼륨은 건물의 기하학으로 프레임 된 자연을 예술 작품의 무대로 설정하도록 한다. 집 중앙에서 세 방향으로 기울어 진 지붕은 전망을 강조한다. 부엌과 인접한 사무실은 호수 쪽으로 나 있는 큰 출입구를 지닌 채로 중앙 블록에 자리잡고 있다. 거실은 동쪽에 있는 유리 링크를 통해 접근 할 수 있으며 방의 가장 높은 지점에는 창문이 있고 하늘 쪽으로 시선을 이끈다. 아침 햇살이 드는 주요 침실은 거실 바로 아래에 자리 잡고 있으며 대지의 경사면으로 인해 바닥 면에 단단히 자리 잡고 있다. 그 공간으로는 매달린 채 공중에 떠 있는 것처럼 보이는 조각 같은 계단을 통해 도달할 수 있다.

서측을 보면, 두 번째 측면 파빌리온이 집의 다른 부분으로부터 약간 기울어진 각도로 세워진 것을 알 수 있다. 그 곳은 친구와 손님들을 위한 별도의 숙소이다. 집의 정문에 가까이 위치해 있는 객실은 그 건물의 나머지 부분보다 더 사적인 공간으로 단단한 목재에서부터 광택이 나는 콘크리트에 이르기까지 바닥 재료의 전환을 보여준다. 내부 주차장과 보조 입구는 아래에 위치해 있다. 이 3개의 파빌리온은 유리로 된 2개의 통로를 통해 서로 연결되며, 동시에 프로젝트의 주요 요소를 공식적으로 분리한다. 정문은 객실로 이어지는 통로에 신중하게 삽입되어 있다. 입구 공간은 외관에 사용 된 재료와 동일한 재료로 되어있어 내부와 외부의 경계를 흐리게 만든다. 중앙 파빌리온의 반대편에 있는 거실로 연결되는 통로는 식당 공간을 겸하고 있으며, 외부로 완전히 개방되어 있다. 야간 조명은 숲 속의 캐노피 아래에 있는 듯한 느낌을 주기 위해 조심스럽게 잘라낸 알루미늄 천장을 통해 제공된다.

트립틱은 대부분 천연 재료를 사용한다. 입면은 동부의 삼나무 판자로 덮여있고, 시간이 지나면서 풍화된 것처럼 보인다. 내부 벽과 천장은 석고 보드나 흰 삼나무로 되어 있고, 바닥은 흰 참나무 또는 광택이 나는 콘크리트로 구성되어 있다. 검은색 알루미늄으로 된 넓은 테라스 문은 끊임없이 변화하는 시야에 프레임이 되어 준다. 안뜰은 부엌과 식당에서부터 호수 쪽으로 이어진다. 건물의 기하학적 구조는 주변 자연을 위한 연극 무대를 조성한다.
