The site is a single-family residence located in Dangha-dong of Paju City in the Gyeonggi-do district. It faces a 6-meter wide road that can be reached by car in the north side, and a cluster of around 15 smallscaled households is formed on both sides and across the site. The area of the land is 424㎡, however, since the building-to-land ratio was limited to 20%, the floor area was over 83m².

To follow the wishes of the owner, who wanted a two-story house of 165.2㎡ with a big yard, the building was placed near the road in the north and a large yard was provided in the south to be able to hold family events and the scenery.

The owner wanted high floor heights, and to secure as much living room and communal space as possible from each the first and second floors. Even with a wooden structure, the living room on the first floor obtained a wide span by the use of an engineering beam, and the couple’s bedroom, dressing room and the bathroom on the first floor were all placed towards the east and the north. In order to correspond to the demands of the owners, who have many ancestral rites, a multipurpose space was planned by opening up the kitchen and living room instead of dividing them, so that the rest of the spaces could be used alternately.

The second floor was designed as a space for the two children, and it is opened around the stairs allowing communication with the couple’s space on the first floor. With the living room in the center, rooms were placed towards the south at each end and the dressing room, bathroom and the office were placed towards the north to allow interaction with the living room and the terrace in the middle. The roof has a high floor height and tilts in different directions with respect to the diagonal line, expressing various senses of space in the interior and exterior.

The north side of the house faces the road and for privacy, it has a serene expression with only openings for minimum functions like ventilation and lighting. However, the house’s external mark is seen at the south side, presenting a twist. Unlike the north where gathered houses are faced, a wide yard and stretched out scenery is placed at the south, so large windows were installed on each floor for lighting and scenery, and to minimize the light from the summer sun with high altitudes or the westward lights in late afternoons, the facade was combined by protruding the eaves and Brick Fin.

Overall, the outside was finished with red bricks, and in order to emphasize the large opening at the south and the Brick Fin, white old-style bricks were used and so avoided sameness. After deciding that the Aluzinc, which is a common material, used on the roof did not look harmonious with the exterior’s bricks, the roof was adjusted into a slope so that it could not be seen from the road or the yard.

대지는 경기도 파주 당하동에 위치한 단독주택 필지로 북쪽에 차로 진입 가능한 6m 도로를 면하고 있고 양 옆 및 맞은 편으로 15세대 정도의 소규모 주택 클러스터를 이루고 있다. 대지면적은 424㎡지만, 건폐율이 20%로 제한되어 있었기 때문에 바닥면적은 25평 남짓 되었으며, 2층 50평의 주택과 넓은 마당을 갖고 싶었던 건축주의 뜻에 따라 건물을 북쪽 도로에 인접하도록 배치하고 남쪽으로는 넓은 마당을 제공하여 가족 행사 및 풍광을 담을 수 있도록 제안하였다.

건축주는 높은 층고와 1, 2층 각각에서의 거실 및 공용공간을 최대한 확보하기를 원했다. 1층 거실은 엔지니어링 빔을 사용하여 목구조이지만 넓은 스팬을 확보하였으며, 1층에는 부부 침실과 드레스룸 및 화장실을 동쪽과 북쪽으로 모아 배치하고 나머지는 제사가 많은 건축주의 요구사항에 부합하기 위하여 가변적으로 이용할 수 있도록 주방과 거실을 구분하지 않고 개방하여 다목적으로 공간으로 계획하였다. 2층은 두 아이를 위한 공간으로 계획되었고 계단을 중심으로 오픈되어 1층의 부부 공간과 교감을 가능케 한다. 거실을 중심으로 양 끝에 남쪽을 면하도록 방을 두었고 북쪽으로는 드레스룸, 화장실 및 서재를 두어 중앙의 거실 및 테라스와 소통하도록 계획하였다. 지붕은 높은 층고를 가지며 대각선을 기준으로 서로 다른 방향으로 기울어져 내부 및 외부에서 다양한 공간감을 표현하고 있다.

집의 북쪽은 도로를 면하고 있어 프라이버시를 위해 환기 및 채광 등 최소한의 기능을 위한 오프닝만으로 담담한 표정을 가지고 있지만 이 집의 외관상 특징은 남쪽에서 확연히 드러나며 반전을 선사한다. 북쪽의 마주보는 집들이 모여있는 조건과는 다르게 남쪽으로는 넓은 마당과 시원한 풍경이 자리하고 있어 각 층에서 채광과 풍광을 위한 커다란 창들을 배치하였고 여름에 고도가 높은 해나 늦은 오후 서향 빛을 최소화하기 위해 처마와 Brick Fin을 돌출시켜 입면을 통합하였다. 전체적으로 적벽돌을 사용하여 외부를 마감하였으며 남쪽에 커다란 오프닝과 Brick Fin을 강조하는 수단으로 백 고벽돌을 부분 사용하여 단조로움을 피했다. 지붕에 사용한 알루-징크는 흔한 재료이고 벽돌의 외관과 조화롭게 보이지 않는다고 판단하여 거리나 마당에서 보이지 않도록 경사각으로 조절하였다.
