태국의 피티티 사라피 주유소는 치앙마이 장인의 손길로 리노베이션된 지역 주민을 위한 특별한 공간이다. 피티티 주유소의 디자인을 주관한 PTTOR의 파일럿 프로젝트로 진행된 피티티 사라피 주유소는 지역 사회에 공헌하는 공간을 목표로 시작됐다. 건축가는 공예에 중점을 두고 다양한 스케일의 프로젝트를 수행하며 기존 건물의 구조는 유지하되 기와를 사용한 새로운 외피 디자인을 적용했다. 기와를 건축 재료로 선정한 이유는 란나(Lanna) 건축 양식에서 사용되는 진흙 기와에서 감명을 받았기 때문이다. 기와 세라믹은 외벽에 흔히 쓰이는 재료여서 외장재로 사용하기 적합했다. 또한 다양한 공예품을 만드는 장인이 모여드는 치앙마이의 지역 특색을 반영하여, 장인이 수공예 기술을 발휘할 수 있는 재료를 선택할 수 있었다.

 

기와의 곡면은 하늘의 색을 반사하고, 이에 따라 건물의 외벽은 하루의 시간 변화에 따라서 시시각각 변화한다. 반사를 표현하기 위해 진주광택 유약을 입혔는데, 공예품의 매력은 여기에서도 드러난다. 수작업으로 완성된 타일은 각자 다른 색깔을 지니고 있어 외벽에 리듬감을 부여한다. 셔 메이커는 외벽 디자인을 구현하기 위해 치앙마이 공방 세 곳과 협업했다. 채체이왓 스튜디오는 목업과 초벌 작업을 맡았고 기와 전문가인 메림 세라믹은 디자인 컨설팅을 진행했다. 진주광택 코팅 등의 최종 공정은 주유소와 같은 지역에 있는 사라피 세라믹 아츠앤디자인에서 담당했다. 진주광택 기법은 이곳의 전문 분야이므로 외장재 생산 시스템을 갖출 수 있었다. 피티티 사라피 주유소는 지방 도시의 인력과 기술을 적용하여 지역 상생과 발전에 이바지한 유의미한 프로젝트이다.

Thailand’s PTT Saraphi Gas Station is a special space for local residents, renovated by the hands of Chiang Mai craftsmen. A pilot project by PTTOR, the firm behind the design of the PTT gas station, PTT Saraphi Gas Station was initiated with the goal of creating a space that contributes to the local community. The architects focused on craftsmanship and carried out projects of various scales, maintaining the structure of the existing building but applying a new skin design using tiles. The architects chose tiles as the material because they were inspired by the mud tiles used in Lanna architecture. Tile ceramic is a common material for exterior walls, so they were suitable for use as exterior materials. It also reflects the regional characteristics of Chiang Mai, which is home to artisans who make a wide variety of crafts, so a material that would allow them to showcase their handcraft skills was chosen.

 

The curved surface of the tiles reflects the colors of the sky, and as a result, the exterior wall of the building changes from moment to moment according to the time of day. A pearlescent glaze was applied to create reflection, and the charm of the craft is revealed here as well. Each handmade tile has a different color, giving the exterior walls a sense of rhythm. Sher Maker collaborated with three workshops in Chiang Mai to realize the exterior wall design. Chatchaiwat Studio was responsible for the mock-ups and rough drawings, while tile expert Maerim Ceramic provided design consultation. The final process, including the pearlescent coating, was done at Saraphi Ceramic Art & Design, located in the same area as the gas station. The pearlescent technique is a specialty of the company, so it was able to set up a production system for the exterior materials. The PTT Saraphi Gas Station is a significant project that contributes to regional coexistence and development by applying local manpower and technology.
