Changping District is located 30 km north of Beijing and has a scene completely different from the cosmopolitan city. Lush mountains and mirror-like lakes provide a natural barrier against noise, attracting many homeowners. The original site contains a large courtyard and a European-style house. This contrast inspired the team to think again. The architect first decided to redefine the relationship between the house and topography, including multi-dimensional content such as ‘topography and building’, ‘architectural appearance and surrounding environment’, and ‘function and living experience’. On the premise of making full use of the site's 8m height difference and retaining the original architectural structure, the European-style facade was completely stripped away and replaced with simple geometric blocks and rustic northern red bricks.

The house was returned to its original form, revealing a simple and honest appearance. At the main entrance to the east, a screen wall concept and brick-laying techniques are skillfully combined to increase privacy and the existing front entrance is hidden behind the brick wall. The first floor is the main living area, and the second floor is for private lounging. Functions, structures, and materials are scattered irregularly in a minimalistic design language, making the interior space more interesting. Wood, glass, concrete and other materials represent the mountain environment. Red brick elements reflect the building. In order to create a relaxed living atmosphere, the designer placed the existing veranda on the first floor to allow a lot of sunlight to flow through this space, and installed folding doors to eliminate the boundary between inside and outside to enjoy nature. Meanwhile, a curved staircase in the garden leads to the interior space. When the folding door is fully opened, the distance between the dining room and the living room, and the tea room and the outdoor space disappears, allowing greater mobility and peace within the space.

The garden has a manicured atmosphere. The planter stand at the entrance adopts a herringbone frame, reflecting the roof shape of the building. Vines become its surface, as if ‘a green awning was installed’. Past the planter stand stands an old persimmon tree in front of the door, which seems to show an interesting life that goes through a kind of order. On the north side of the house there is a series of terraces that curve downwards, providing several playgrounds. Like two ‘floating islands’, the small observation deck and brick pavilion on the lower level are places good for chatting. In addition, the stone road outside connects the front and back yards, providing an oriental romance. The landscape design shows both openness and privacy. The designer invited WILD-SCAPE, a plant design team, to work together to add a wild and natural feel on the edge of the building site. Now, the ideal house has sweet memories and hopes, and the house becomes a multidimensional space that grows in the countryside.  As time goes by in this space, one can enjoy a deep rest that is free, full of breath, honest and true, as if you are in the wilderness.
