Featuring a view of a wall of dense green foliage, Okra is a brunch cafe where its patrons, even vegans, can comfortably enjoy a tranquil recess. A space that provides a retreat from the exhausting overconsumption of today’s cosmopolitan existence.

Okra’s design intent was to spotlight its rich natural light which, in turn, emphasizes the space and its surroundings. Stepping foot into Okra, the surroundings displayed through the windows are instantly eye-catching. The natural light weaves its way through the brimming foliage of the metasequoia trees lining the Yangjaecheon Metasequoia Road.

Although windows in all directions are indeed good for daylighting, in order to accentuate the impact of the green leaves, the windows on the side were concealed into the wall. Disadvantaged in terms of illumination, however, it clears the stage for the mysteriousness of natural light to take its lead role.  Even as vehicles pass by, the light reflects off the cars shimmers on to the ceiling, creating a luminous performance unique to Okra.

As competing bold colors may create unwanted clutter and bury the focal green, an achromatic color was elected for the interior. The walls, floors, and even furniture are finished with tones of gray in concert. This sense of unity from floor to ceiling, not only, enhances the views of Metasequoia Road, but also the complexion of the food Okra’s offers.

The ‘Fountain’ takes its position in prominence and is an objet d’art that is the embodiment of Okra. To curtail disposable waste, such as wet wipes, the client desired a washbasin for patrons to wash their hands. Functionally, the ‘Fountain’ satisfies this requirement and does so in artistic elegance. The ‘Fountain’s’ natural rock-like form was sculpted from lightweight foam and visually supported by twin sea stacks that display ingredients used in Okra’s menu.

The most critical consideration for the space design was to harmonize the internal with the external.  Utilization of sunlight is key in creating this organic environment.  Where natural light is lacking due to Okra’s physical location, the meticulous selection of lighting colors and tones helps to make the most of the Metasequoia Road, while natural light for the seating area was deemed as unnegotiable.

The use of traditional Korean paper met with natural light was purposed to soften the character of the windowless wall.  The traditional Korean paper was pasted on only a modest part of the wall, while the window it covers allows for sunlight to pass, adding a touch of tradition to the natural lighting.

By being able to welcome in and engage the natural elements from its outside, Okra has manifested its brand philosophy of waste reduction into its interior design.
