This project is about turning old houses into cafes. The relationship between the newly made and the old roof was important. It wasn't about conservation, it was about the simple fact that different times meet.

There are so many cases of meeting old houses. In addition to the renovation of houses in Japan, many houses are now transforming into commercial spaces in Seoul. What was important was that the 1980s and 2020s were completely separated by the boundaries of roofs and walls. The roof was already finished, so I thought that the new things that were created at the bottom of the wall should be very modern. There may be tastes in this intention, but the problem of characteristics or individuality is greater in terms of the project being a commercial space. As I said earlier, there are numerous home renovation projects in Seoul, and many of them focus on retro or retro. Or someone else who completely overpowers the building's miscellaneous history by the time it is now. I am not criticizing these two attitudes for being wrong. I just want to show an attitude of simply acknowledging the existence of the history of the building, and to take an attitude of using it rather than respecting or restoring it.

Here, users drink coffee, sometimes read books, tap their laptops, and talk like I do now. And you have to share that space with others. In that respect, the wall structure nLDK plane is really challenging. A small room where one person can barely lie down and sleep, where the family sits together and probably watches TV, and the couple's master bedroom doesn't know You have to transform into a space that you have to share with people. I think that this new act is going to take place on an existing room scale, no matter what the decorations are I don't know exactly what kind of mind it is when I see it unfold, but I think of uncomfortable feelings in my body. Is it because I feel like I'm having a meal at someone else's house? I wanted to get rid of this inconvenience, but I couldn't get rid of all the walls. They had to do minimal structural reinforcement and maintain most of the floor plan. Then, a 300mm extension wall was built on the central wall. So that it doesn't look like a familiar plane. I don't really know how effective it was with just this level of intervention. Still, some spaces are meant for someone It may feel uncomfortable because it feels like a room. But when I'm done making it, I feel that the taste of the house is lessened. As you work on it, sometimes you can't completely overcome or solve it completely through design. But the relaxation is satisfactory to some extent. Active intervention would have made the space of 70 square meters narrower and narrower. I had to decide between "getting rid of the taste of the house" and "wide," and I decided to be a little closer to "wide."

보존의 문제라기보다는 ‘서로 다른 시간이 만난다.’ 라는 단순한 사실에 관한 문제였습니다.

오래된 주택을 만나는 사례는 너무나 많습니다. 일본의 주택 개조뿐만 아니라, 현재 서울에서도 수많은 주택이 상업 공간으로 변신하고 있습니다. 중요하게 생각했던 것은 지붕과 벽을 경계로 1980년대와 2020년대가 완전히 분리되는 것이었습니다. 지붕은 이미 완성되어 있으니, 벽 하부에 새로 생성되는 것들이 지극히 현재의 것이 되어야 한다고 생각했습니다. 이 같은 의도에는 취향도 있겠지만, 프로젝트가 상업 공간이라는 측면에서 특성 혹은 개성의 문제가 더 큽니다. 앞서 말했듯 서울에는 수많은 주택 개조 프로젝트가 존재하고, 그 중의 대다수는 복각이나 레트로에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 혹 다른 누군가는 그 건물의 미시사를 지금의 시간으로 완벽히 제압하기도 합니다. 이 두 태도가 틀렸다고 비판하는 것은 아닙니다.
다만 저는 건물 역사의 존재를 단순히 인정하는 태도를 보이고, 그 역사를 존중이나 복원보다는 그저 사용하는 태도를 취하기를 원할 뿐 입니다.

이 곳에서 사용자는 커피를 마시고, 가끔 책을 읽고, 지금 저처럼 노트북을 두드리기도 하고, 대화하기도 합니다. 그리고 그 공간을 다른 사람들과 공유해야만 합니다. 그런 면에서 벽 구조 nLDK 평면은 참으로 곤란합니다. 한 사람이 겨우 누워 잘 수 있는 작은 방, 가족이 모여 앉아 아마도 TV를 봤을 거실, 부부의 안방이 모르는 사람들과 공유해야 하는 공간으로 변신하여야 합니다. 저는 이 새로운 행위가 (어떤 장식이 붙든) 기존 방 스케일에서 펼쳐지는 것을 보면 어떤 마음인지 정확히 알지는 못하지만, 몸속에서 불편한 감정이 떠오릅니다. 남의 집에서 밥상을 핀 기분이 들어서일까요?
이 불편함을 없애고 싶었지만, 모든 벽을 다 없앨 수는 없었습니다. 최소한의 구조 보강을 하고, 방의 평면을 대부분 유지해야만 했습니다. 그 후, 중앙 벽에 300mm 정도의 연장 벽을 만들었습니다. 익숙한 평면처럼 보이지 않게 하기 위함입니다.
겨우 이 정도의 개입으로 얼마나 효과적이었는지는 사실 잘 모르겠습니다. 여전히 어떤 공간은 누군가에게 방처럼 느껴져 불편할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 다 만들고 보니, ‘집 맛’이 덜 해졌음을 느낍니다. 작업을 하다 보면, 어떤 날에는 설계를 통해 완전히 극복하거나 완벽히 해결할 수 없기도 합니다. 하지만 완화된 것만으로도 어느 정도는 만족스럽습니다. 적극적인 개입은 70제곱미터의 공간을 점점 좁게 만들었을 것입니다. 저는 ‘집 맛을 없애는 것’과 ‘넒음’ 사이에서 결정해야 했고, ‘넓음’에 조금 더 가까운 태도를 가지기로 했습니다.
