GONGBECH - UNTOUCHABLE HEART

The site is located at the end of Dongbok-ri, a village on the northeast coast of Jeju Island. Two warehouses were inadvertently located in the landscape on the coastal hill, where trees and wild grass grew up toward the land due to unusually strong winds. The architect was fascinated by the silence when he first met the ruins, which had been left unattended for many years after being built as a freezer in 1982.

As with most regeneration projects, demolition was done first. Demolition is always a series of difficult choices because once you touch it, you can't go back to your original form. Everything seems meaningful, while meaningless as decoration. The most essential thing must be found. And I have no choice but to believe in that decision. The architect was convinced that it was the overwhelming sense of space given by the absolute size of the building and the regular repetition of the Ramen structure that heightened it. The newly created space meets the horizontal line of the sea through a series of low openings throughout the length of the building, and the high openings in the front capture the sky. The principles were the same for the second building. The inner partition wall was treated more like a piece of sculpture. However, the roof trusses and slotted slate roofs that are placed at intervals of 2m will be preserved as they are.

The purpose set by the client was a complex cultural facility, including a restaurant. At the beginning of the design, a large direction was decided to remodel the two warehouse buildings into multi-purpose spaces where various cultural events could be digested based on galleries and to build new buildings that accommodate cafes and bakeries. He hoped that the two galleries would be an impressive architecture of space itself. The design process was an attempt to build emotions rationally. The designer hoped that the silence of the fascinated ruins would still be discovered by visitors with a sense of place after the architectural intervention of demolition and reconstruction.

The theme set by the architect is about the process of finding oneself in ruins, intended to be described through a planned sequence across two buildings. The sea horizon on an infinite scale, the sky on an unreachable ideal, the overwhelming sense of space, the material properties of old materials that reveal the finiteness of time, the metal that glows with a momentary sharpness, and the forest that makes you lose direction. The environment and architectural space of the earth have been replaced with these various symbols, and reflective glass ambushed throughout the sequence becomes a mirror that reflects visitors themselves with the background.

대지는 제주 북동쪽 해안가 마을 동복리 끝자락에 있다. 유달리 바람이 많아 나무와 들풀이 육지를 향해 누워 자라던 해안가 언덕에는 두 동의 창고가 무심히 풍경 속에 자리하고 있었다. 1982년 냉동 창고로 지어진 후 이런저런 사연으로 오랜 시간 방치되었던 이 폐허와 처음 만났을 때 건축가는 그 적막함에 매료되었다.

대부분의 재생 프로젝트가 그러하듯 철거가 가장 먼저 이루어졌다. 한번 손대면 두 번 다시 제 모습으로 되돌릴 수 없기에 철거는 항상 어려운 선택의 연속이다. 모든 것들이 의미 있어 보이는 한편 장식처럼 무의미하다. 가장 본질적인 것을 찾아내야 한다. 그리고 그 결정을 믿는 수밖에 없다. 건축가는 건물의 절대적 크기가 주는 압도적 공간감과 이를 고조시키는 라멘구조의 규칙적 반복이 그것이라고 확신했다. 그렇게 새로이 만들어낸 공백은 건물 길이 방향 전체로 연속된 낮은 개구부를 통해 바다의 수평선과 만나게 되고 전면의 높은 개구부는 하늘을 담아낸다. 두 번째 건물의 경우에도 원칙은 같았다. 내부 칸막이벽은 차라리 조각에 가깝게 다뤄졌다. 다만 2M 간격으로 배치된 지붕 트러스와 구멍 난 슬레이트 지붕은 있는 그대로 보존하기로 했다.

사업주가 설정한 용도는 휴게음식점을 포함한 복합문화시설이었다. 설계 초기에 두 창고 건물을 갤러리를 기본으로 다양한 문화행사를 소화할 수 있는 다목적 공간으로 리모델링하고 카페와 베이커리를 수용하는 건물을 신축하는 큰 방향이 결정되었다. 그는 두 갤러리가 공간 그 자체로 감동을 주는 건축이 되길 희망했다. 설계과정은 감정을 이성적으로 구축하는 시도였다. 디자이너는 매료되었던 폐허의 적막함이 철거와 재구축이라는 건축의 개입작업 후에도 여전히 장소의 감각으로 관람객들에게 발견되길 바랐다.

건축가가 설정한 주제는 폐허에서 자신을 발견하는 과정에 대한 것으로 두 건물에 걸쳐 계획된 시퀀스를 통해 서사화 되도록 의도하였다. 무한한 척도의 바다 수평선, 도달할 수 없는 이상향인 하늘, 낯설게 하는 압도적 공간감, 시간의 유한함을 드러내는 오래된 재료의 물성, 찰나의 날카로움으로 빛나는 금속, 방향을 잃게 만드는 숲. 대지의 환경과 건축의 공간을 이러한 다양한 상징들로 치환하였고, 시퀀스 곳곳에 매복된 반사유리는 배경과 함께 관람객 자신을 비추는 거울이 된다.
