Roly-poly Cotto is a project that involves and intervenes in all parts from naming, spatial planning and design, styling, product design, and even graphic design. Through analysis from various aspects, we set up the concept to identify positive, negative, and deficient images, and to overcome them. It is still very ironic, but we thought that we should make innovative, kind but strong, friendly but sensuous image. To do so, we thought that more complex than simple, more emotional than provocative, more analogue than digital, that would be the solution as a non-temporary and sustainable space. So, we hoped after the space become more familiar, it would be delivered to the uses step by step.

The key to the design is to combine the gardens hidden in two existing buildings into one, to secure the widest area in whole space, and to provide a medium. The scattered six spaces formed a relationship through this garden to perform each function. 7 spaces divided in the order of cave, cube, slope, shade, garden, hall, and sala, have different roles and heights, and provide various sequences.

The main material of the space is red brick. The red brick is a material that contains universality and persistence and builds the structures with gathering small cells. The bricks, which are built with about 100,000 blocks, are like the conservative nature of materials that has kept over the years, and the meaning of the corporate spirit which has developed steadily.

The roly-poly cotto was the project of understanding and transforming the two different buildings into once concept to create synergy. To do that, we gave the meanings to each 7 space that was used for unrelated purposed each other, so that they could relate to each other in context over the new story. The materials used inside were with wood, fabric, and ceramics that are suitable with the bricks, the main material. However, we used stainless steel for the rhythm of the material, thus, we cut every single segment so that it could feel the temporality. The various different levels of the floor inside the space help users produce various scenes and understand space more in three dimensional ways. 롤리폴리 꼬또 롤리폴리 꼬또는 네이밍에서부터 공간기획 및 공간디자인, 스타일링 그리고 제품디자인, 그래픽디자인까지 모든 부분을 관여하고 개입한 프로젝트이다. 다양한 측면에서의 분석을 통해 긍정적 이미지, 부정적 이미지 그리고 결여되어 있는 이미지를 확인하고 이를 극복할 수 있는 개념을 설정하였다. 넌센스이게도 변함없지만 혁신적이고, 착하지만 강하며, 친근하지만 감각적인 이미지를 심어야 한다고 생각하게 되었다. 그러기 위해서 단순하기보다는 복합적으로, 자극적이기보다는 감성적으로, 디지털하기보다는 아날로그한 방법으로의 디자인이 일시적이지 않고 지속가능한 공간으로서의 해결책이 될 것이라고 생각했다. 따라서 시간이 흘러 공간이 무르익으면서 사용자에게 공간의 언어가 느린 호흡으로 전달되길 바랐다.

기존 두개의 건물에 숨겨져 있는 정원을 하나로 합쳐 전체 공간 내의 가장 넓은 면적을 확보하고 매개역할을 부여하는 것이 설계의 핵심이라고 할 수 있다. 흩어져 있는 여섯개의 공간들은 이 정원을 통해 관계를 맺으며 각각의 기능을 수행하도록 하였다. 케이브(cave:동굴), 큐브(cube:상자), 슬로프(slope:언덕), 쉐이드(shade:그늘막), 가든(garden:정원), 홀(hall:연회장), 살라(sala:거실)의 순서로 구분된 7개의 공간은 역할과 높낮이를 달리하며 다양한 시퀀스를 제공한다.

공간의 주된 재료는 붉은 벽돌이다. 붉은 벽돌은 보편성과 지속성을 내포하며 작은 셀들이 모여 견고하게 구축되는 소재다. 약 10만장으로 구축된 벽돌은 오랜 세월이 흘러도 쉽게 변하지 않는 소재의 보수적인 특성, 그리고 꾸준히 발전해 온 기업 정신과 맥을 같이한다. 벽돌의 다양한 구축방식과 패턴들은 보수성을 극복하는 퍼포먼스다. 내부에 사용된 소재는 주 소재인 벽돌에 어울리는 나무나 패브릭, 세라믹 등을 매칭하였다. 단 물성의 리듬감을 위해 스테인레스스틸을 사용하였으나 수작업으로 일일이 갈아내어 시간성이 느껴지도록 하였다.

롤리폴리 꼬또는 크게 보면 다른 두개의 건물을 하나의 개념으로 이해하고 변화시켜 시너지를 만드는 작업이었다. 그러기 위해서 서로 무관한 용도로 사용되고 있었던 7개의 공간이 새로운 이야기 위에 서로 맥락을 갖고 관계할 수 있도록 각각의 성격을 부여하였다. 전체를 지배하는 견고한 벽돌의 이미지는 오뚝이의 동그란 형태감에서 유추된 곡선들로 중화되며 공간의 균형을 이룰 수 있도록 디자인하였다. 공간 내의 변화무쌍한 바닥의 레벨차는 사용자에게 다양한 장면들을 생산하고 공간을 보다 입체적으로 이해할 수 있도록 도와준다. 결국 이 모든 관계들은 시각적 유희와 경험을 만들어 내고 브랜드의 새로운 이미지를 심는 하나의 역할을 수행할 것으로 기대한다. 글 제공 : 스튜디오 베이스
