House in the forest

This project begins with close to three hectares of barely touched forest. Only a short distance from Niseko’s ski slopes, the silence here is the antithesis of the vacation bustle that has turned several of the renown ski area’s towns into a haphazard sprawl of increasingly suburban dimensions.

Solitude Enchanted by the beauty of the region but disturbed by this relentlessly encroaching pseudo-suburbia, the owners, a large family, are seeking escape in the forest’s solitude. Consequentially, the brief is not for a house but for a time in and with the forest.

Trees The site is an almost perfect square with 160-metre-long edges, filled with tall pine trees. As we approach, a mound prevents any views into the site: The only access, a small rural road running along the northern boundary, was lowered many years ago. After we climb up this mound, we stand between the trees. A gentle slope leads down towards the south for about 100 metres before the top of a steep acclivity demarcates the site’s southern border. About half-way in, there’s a clearing at the site’s western boundary.

Instinct Moving between the trees evokes curiosity. We are probing the surroundings. Every subtle movement changes the depth of our perception. The clearing that we have discovered is the site’s only place where the distance turns the trees into an abstract background. Yet instead of placing the building in the middle of the clearing (which would result in 360 degrees of background), we keep meandering between the trees at the edge to the clearing, protected by the trees around us.

Forest The building branches out horizontally. Moving through the house is moving through the forest. As our views keep changing from far to near, the forest is both distant background and tactile environment. The end of each branch is cut open. The closer we move to the extremes (the end of the branches), the more we are drawn into the forest. While the protection of the inside separates us physically from the experience of the forest, the focus and scale of the windows to the forest intensifies it. We are sitting in the forest. In the house’s central spine, this focus of selection is replaced by a multi-faceted instantaneity. As a multitude of views of the forest around us are filling the space, the original experience inside the forest is always present.

Dialogue The House in the Forest is not about a fixed form but an ever-changing dialogue with the forest. The eventually built is merely the result in a process of probing and responding to the surroundings to create a place where the family can be both together and by themselves, where they can become part of the forest.

숲을 횡단하는 길을 닮은 주택, 숲속의집

이 프로젝트는 3헥타르에 가까운 드넓은 숲 속에 자리한다. 니세코의 스키장에서 얼마 떨어진 곳에서, 고요함을 간직한 이 주택은 몇몇 유명한 스키 지역의 무질서하게 늘어진 바캉스 붐과는 반대되는 모습을 보여준다.

독립 건축주는 이 지역의 아름다움에 매료되었지만 교외의 생활방식에 혼란스러움을 느껴 숲의 고독으로부터 탈출하고자 했다. 결과적으로, 이 집에서 머무는 짧은 시간은 집이 아닌 숲과 함께 하는 시간이다.

나무들 주택은 키가 큰 소나무들이 들어찬 넓은 광장에 놓인다. 언덕에 둘러싸이면서, 우리가 주택에 접근할 때에 모든 시야가 차단된다. 유일한 통로는 북쪽 경계를 따라 흐르는 작은 시골길이다. 이 언덕을 올라서면 나무들 사이에 서있게 된다. 완만한 경사를 따라 남쪽으로 100m 가량 내려가면 가파른 경사의 정상이 대지의 남쪽 경계를 만든다.

본능 나무의 사이사이를 걸어다니는 것은 호기심을 불러 일으키는 프로그램이다. 건축가는 주변을 조사하며 게획을 짰다. 모든 미묘한 움직임은 인식의 깊이를 변화시킨다. 광장은 나무로부터 약간 떨어지며 나무를 추상적인 배경으로 바꿔주는 유일한 위치다. 하지만 건물을 360도 둘러싸는 배경의 중앙에 놓음으로써 거주자는 나무들 사이를 굽이칠 수 있고 주변 나무들에 의해 보호를 받는다.

삼림 이 프로젝트는 수평으로 갈라져 있다. 집을 통해 이동하는 길은 숲을 통해 이동하는 느낌을 준다. 시점이 먼 곳에서 가까운 곳으로 계속 변화함에 따라, 숲은 먼 배경이 되기도 하고 가까운 촉각 환경이 되기도 한다. 각 분지의 끝은 잘려져 있어 양 극단으로 갈수록, 거주자는 숲으로 더 끌려간다. 내부는 숲으로부터 물리적으로 분리되어있지만, 숲으로 향하는 수많은 창문들의 집중력과 규모는 숲의 영향을 강화시켜준다. 집 안에서 거주자는 동시에 숲에 앉아있다. 중심이 되는 집의 척추에서, 이러한 건축적 제안의 초점은 다면적인 순간성으로 대체된다. 주변의 숲이 무수한 경치로 공간을 가득 채우기 때문에 숲의 경험은 항상 집 안에 들어서있다.

대화 숲 속의 집은 고정된 형태가 아니라 숲과의 변화무쌍한 대화를 만들어낸다. 최종적으로 만들어진 주택은 단지 가족들이 함께 하는 공간이 아닌, 그들이 스스로 숲의 일부가 될 수 있는 장소로 작동하며 주변을 조사하고 반응하는 대화의 과정에 끌어들인다.
