The reborn Hubei Foreign Language Bookstore is a brand-new image formed entirely from the basic structure of the old site. The facade of green hills separates the street view of Zhongnan Road with Hubei Foreign Language Bookstore. The designer created a light cone that runs from the roof to the 1st floor. It allows the changes in weather and time to permeate all corners of the bookstore with the pouring light. It creates an unreal experience in real site. It is the pyramidal cells of the bookstore, arousing ordinary people’s awareness of site and space, and thus stimulating readers’ imagination.

The bookstore of one basement level and seven floors has the light cone is the center and it is surrounded by book world. Around the light cone is the core of the bookstore. From the first floor, there are urban art living room, 24H study room, children’s library, humanity reading room and silk road reading room, art reading room and the future reading room, and the bookstore on the roof displaying rare books. On both sides of the core area are life-related spaces derived from bookstores. Bookstore is a complex system that are constantly growing and updating. Therefore, Hubei Foreign Language Bookstore is not only a bookstore, but also a cultural and creative combination of lifestyle and aesthetics.

When the design team took over Hubei Foreign Language Bookstore project, they found that it had gone through expansions and reconstruction in different periods. The first thing what to need is to remove a part of the unsafe expansions, followed by strengthening the each part of different periods into a solid whole. Moreover, reinforcement should also consider the safety of the light cone formed by cutting the floor in the core afterwards. The invisible basic work is also to clean up, increase elevators, how to make this 80’s bookstore meet the 2019 requirements on fire facilities.

80년대 중국의 옛 건물을 재활용하여 만들어진 화려한 빛의 서점, 호북성 외국어 서점

푸른색 타공판으로 중국의 산같은 풍경을 연출하는 파사드는 중난길(Zhongnan Road)에 새로 생긴 서점 건물의 것이다. 푸른색의 파사드는 거리에서 어쩌면 이질적으로 느껴지기도 하는데, 이는 거리의 대부분이 지어진지 꽤 오래된 특징없는 건축물들로 둘러싸여 있기 때문이다. 따라서 건축가는 이러한 거리에 새로운 컬러를 더함으로써, 분위기를 가다듬고 새로운 삶으로 향하게 만드는 서점이라는 공간으로 사람들을 이끌어 냈다.

지하 1층, 지상 7층 규모의 서점은 빛의 원뿔을 중심으로 책으로 둘러싸여 있다. 1층부터 도시 예술 리빙룸, 24시간 스터디 룸, 어린이 도서관, 휴머니티 열람실 및 실크로드 열람실, 예술열람실, 미래열람실, 옥상에는 희귀 도서를 진열한 공간들이 마련되어 있으며, 중심 공간 양옆에는 서점에서 파생된 생활용품 관련 공간이 있다. 내부의 중심에는 지붕에서 1층까지 이어지는 빛의 원뿔을 만들었고, 이 원뿔은 쏟아지는 빛이 서점 구석구석에 스며들도록 하여 날씨와 시간의 변화를 허용한다. 이 풍경은 지식을 상징하고 심지어 인간의 감성을 나타내는 풍경이다. 이러한 풍경은 실제 대지에서 비현실적인 경험을 만들어낸다. 이는 서점의 피라미드형 지하실로 대중에게 대지와 공간에 대한 인식을 불러일으켜 독자들의 상상력을 자극한다.

서점은 지속적으로 성장하고 업데이트되는 복잡한 시스템이다. 따라서 후베이 외국어 서점은 단순한 서점이 아니라 생활 양식과 미학의 문화 창조적 상호작용을 만들어낸다. 옛 건물은 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 증축되거나 재건됐었는데, 무리하게 증축된 부분을 제거하고 서로 다른 시기에 확장된 각 부분이 연결되어 견고한 하나의 공간이 됐다. 또한, 추후 중심부 바닥이 절단되어 만들어진 빛의 고깔에 구조적으로 보강됐다. 뿐만 아니라, 엘리베이터 부분을 늘리고, 현 시대의 소방 설비 시스템에 맞도록 조성됐다. 다시 태어난 후베이 외국어 서점에서 이전의 모습이나 형태를 조금도 찾아볼 수 없지만, 옛 건물을 바탕으로 한 새로운 문화공간이 됐다. 이렇게 새 서점 공간은 이 땅에 지어진 건축물의 정신을 계승하고 있으며, 무한의 문화적 등대로 새롭게 사람들과 만난다.
