5BLDG is a small building that was built on about 89.25m² sloped land in an alley in Sajik-dong while overcoming the small construction area of 7m*7m. It has a shape that looks like concrete cubes were stacked like steps and a cone with its upper part cut off was put on top, and the exterior was wrapped with aluminum mesh. The windows that shine beyond the colorful lattice patterns and the metal envelope that changes color depending on the light also add to creating a unique form. The geometric shape of the building that was built using the height of the hill also changes depending on the angle in which it is viewed.

The interior of the five floors, which is made up of one space, is organically connected through silver stairs. The first floor, which is a semi-basement, is a space that embraces the light and shadows that pour around the staircase that was installed by raising the floor height. Moreover, a sense of openness was provided to the second floor, which is the entrance, as well as the third and fourth floors by placing horizontally long windows. When the fifth floor is reached after ascending the small spiral staircase, the landscapes of the surrounding Seoul Fortress Wall, Inwangsan mountain and the city shimmer through the gaps of the mesh wall. As we ascend to the rooftop, our senses and intellect are also enhanced, and due to this, we leave the vigor and speed of the crowded city behind and pay attention to ‘being here, right now.’ In this way, 5BLDG sends us a high-five that encourages us to newly discover and live our lives in the cold-hearted city life that heartlessly repeats.

Architect Kaichun Kim has experimented with intelligent and artistic architecture that allows lives of undefinable sizes, forms and amplitudes to be enjoyed. Jeongtosa(2000) and Manhae Village(2004) were challenges of ‘Non-architecture’ that exists separately-together with the surrounding nature through restrained lines, lumps and light. Hankan House(2014) was an attempt on ‘Transparent Architecture’ that maximizes the beauty of everyday life as the interior and exterior are crossed using simple devices such as sliding doors and whole windows. He continuously moves to break down the wall between daily/non-daily (religion, art, philosophy) life, and to create spaces that open the prospects of new thoughts, perceptions and experiences. He also portrayed a cultural space full of vitality for 5BLDG. Hence, in the middle of a high-priced plot of land within the four main gates of Seoul, where everything is organized according to profit and function, a small but brilliant building that immerses in its own fragrance and grain was born. This place, which stands tall after overcoming the altitude restriction, the boundary of the road and the narrow inclined gap that made it difficult for the construction equipment to even enter, continues to move while interacting with the sky, wind and stars. Furthermore, it will continue that cosmic day as well as bring about a fresh breeze to the culture of the surrounding alleyways.

Within this metropolitan space of cutting edge capitalism and infinite competitions that push us to buy this, do that, and go there for a better future, how much attention are we paying to the little things of the present? Just as a small seed can become a fir, but a fir cannot become a seed, everything big is born from something small, and everything small requires slowness. In this gasping land where big lands, big houses and big cars become happiness and power, 5BLDG, which is enjoying its smallness and speed, seems to be asking again what the conditions and forms of a truly happy life are.   Text: Ilmin Nah(Kookmin Univ., Critic)

삶을 축하하고 격려하는 하이파이브의 건축, 파이브빌딩

비평   파이브빌딩은 사직동 어느 골목 비탈지 27평의 터에 7m*7m(15평)의 작은 건축면적을 딛고 선 꼬마 건물이다. 계단식으로 쌓은 콘크리트 큐브에 윗동이 잘린 고깔모자를 씌운 모양이고, 외부는 알루미늄 메시로 감쌌다. 여기에 다채로운 격자 무늬와 빛에 따라 색을 달리하는 금속 외피 너머 비치는 창문들까지 더해 독특한 조형이다. 언덕의 높낮이를 활용해 지어진 건물의 기하학적 형태 역시 바라보는 각도에 따라 달라진다.

5층 모두 한 칸으로 된 내부는 은빛 계단을 통해 유기적으로 연결했다. 반지층인 1층은 층고를 높여 설치한 계단 주위로 쏟아지는 빛과 그림자를 품은 공간이며, 입구인 2층과 3, 4층은 가로로 긴 창을 내어 개방감을 주었다. 작은 나선형 계단을 타고 5층에 오르면 메시벽 틈새로 주위의 서울성곽과 인왕산, 도시 풍경이 일렁인다. 옥상까지 오르는 동안 우리의 감각과 지성도 함께 고양되는데, 덕분에 번잡한 도심의 기운과 속도를 떠나 ‘지금, 여기 있음’에 주목하게 된다. 이렇게 파이브빌딩은 무정하게 반복되는 메마른 도시의 일상에서 우리 삶을 새롭게 발견하고 살게 격려하는 하이파이브를 보낸다.

김개천 건축가는 한정할 수 없는 크기와 형식, 진폭의 삶을 누리게 하는 지적이고 예술적인 건축을 실험해왔다. 정토사(2000)와 만해마을(2004)은 절제된 선과 덩어리, 빛을 통해 주변의 자연과 따로-같이 존재하는 ‘비-건축’의 도전이었고, 한칸집(2014)은 미닫이문, 통창과 같은 간소한 장치들을 활용해 내/외부를 넘나들며 일상의 아름다움을 극대화하는 ‘투명한 건축’의 시도였다. 일상/비일상(종교, 예술, 철학)의 벽을 허물고 새로운 사유와 인식, 경험의 지평을 여는 공간을 빚기 위해 그는 끊임없이 움직여 다닌다. 파이브빌딩을 위해서도 생명력 넘치는 문화적 공간을 그렸다. 그렇게 모든 것이 수익, 기능에 따라 조직된 서울 사대문 안 금싸라기 땅 한복판에서도 스스로의 향기와 결에 몰두하는 작지만 빛나는 건물이 탄생했다. 건설장비가 들어가기조차 힘든 비탈지 좁은 틈새와 도로의 경계, 고도제한을 극복하고 우뚝 선 이곳은, 하늘과 바람과 별과 상호작용하며 계속해서 움직이고 있다. 그리고 그 우주적 하루를 이어가며 주변 골목길 문화에도 신선한 바람을 일으킬 것이다.

더 나은 미래를 위해서 이것을 사라, 저것을 해라, 그리로 가라고 떠미는 첨단자본주의와 무한경쟁의 대도시 공간에서 우리는 얼마나 현재의 작은 것들에 주목하고 있을까. 작은 씨앗이 전나무가 될 수 있지만 전나무가 씨앗은 될 수 없듯이, 모든 큰 것은 작은 것에서 태어나고 모든 작은 것은 느림을 요구한다. 제 작음과 속도를 즐기고 있는 파이브빌딩은 큰 땅과 큰 집, 큰 차가 행복과 권력이 되는 숨 가쁜 이 땅에서 진정으로 행복한 삶의 조건과 형식은 무엇인지 되묻고 있는 듯하다.   글 : 나일민(국민대학교 교수, 문화예술비평)
