The roadside area of Jayu-ro in Paju Book city is filled with printing offices that mostly perform printing functions than publishing. Jyoni is a is a printing company that specializes in special printing. The demands of Jyoni for the design of the printing factory were for them to be able to review the arrangement pattern considering the circulation of work by reviewing the layout of the printers, and to structurally and mechanically examine the equipment's weight, vibrational absorption, etc. in advance while considering the precision of the printing equipment.

Despite the fact that Paju is a design city, the word 'design' felt shameful as the printing factories, which are gathered in one area, are all gray box buildings. Built in such a place, Jyoni's office building factory is like a symbolic flag fluttering with a brown steel plate in a line of a gray quadrilateral legion, and its visibility is highlighted from the entrance road as well as the rapid Jayu-ro. The serrated mass windows are not merely elements for the design of marking the awareness of boredom. Since all printing factories of the Book City are facing the western roads, the light that permeates through the west to the sensitive digital equipment is an element that must absolutely be blocked. Therefore, in order to block light in consideration of expensive digital equipment and to adequately utilize ventilation as well as natural light, a continuous serrated changing window was planned towards the south.

In contrast to this, horizontal light wedges were sculpturally installed to the office space on the second floor to allow the flow of the Han River beyond Jayu-ro to be felt. Looking out from the second floor horizontal light wedges not only implies the sensibility of 'diffusion' that embraces the vastness of the West Sea before going out to the West Sea, but also is implicit of 'accuracy' as if flashes of light are shining on the brown factory mass as being seen. The horizontal light wedges are a symbol of the futurity of Jyoni, a cutting-edge digital printing company.

On the other hand, since the factory mass itself is large, skylights were placed to induce the flow of indirect daylight to the areas in which daylight does not reach, even though the factory mass is the living room of the working environment. This is a case where a landscape that provided rhythm to the dullness of surrounding printing factories by reflecting the element of light to the windows of factory architecture was created. The people of Jyoni’s office building are always cheerful, as the sculptural "ritornello" vitalizes them to the rhythm of the repeated printers.

조우니

파주 출판도시의 자유로변 지역은 출판보다는 주로 인쇄기능을 수행하는 인쇄소 집합지다. (주)조우니는 특수 인쇄를 전문적으로 하는 인쇄전문업체다. 조우니 측에서 인쇄 공장 설계의 요구 사항은 인쇄기들의 레이아웃을 검토하여 작업 동선을 배려한 배치패턴을 찾아내는 것과 인쇄 장비의 정밀도를 고려하여 사전에 장비들의 하중, 장비의 진동흡수 등에 대한 구조적, 기계적 검토가 있어야 하는 것이었다.

파주는 디자인 도시임에도 불구하고 한 일대에 모여있는 인쇄공장들이 한결같이 회색의 박스 건물로 ‘디자인’이란 말이 무색하게 느껴졌다. 이러한 곳에 세워진 조우니 사옥 공장은 도열된 회색의 4각 군단에 갈색의 강판으로 펄럭이는 상징 깃발 같으며, 진입도로와 자유로의 속도감 있는 도로에서도 시인성이 부각된다. 톱니형의 매스 창은 단순히 지루함에 대한 인식성의 표식을 위한 디자인만을 위한 요소는 아니다. 출판도시의 모든 인쇄공장이 서측 도로면을 향하고 있어, 민감한 디지털 장비들에 서향으로 침투하는 빛은 절대 차단해야 하는 요소다. 이와 같이 디지털 고가 장비들에 대한 배려로, 빛을 차단하고 환기와 적절한 자연광을 활용하기 위해 남향의 톱니형 연속 변화창을 계획했다.

이에 대비되어 2층 사무공간은 자유로 너머 한강의 흐름을 느끼도록 수평 슬릿창을 조각적으로 설치했다. 2층 수평 슬릿창에서 바라봄은 서해로 나가기 전 서해의 넓음을 수용하는 ‘확산’의 감성뿐 아니라, 바라보이는 시선으로서 갈색 공장 매스에 섬광이 꽂히는 것과 같이 ‘정밀성’의 함의를 내포한다. 수평 슬릿창(Light wedge)은 첨단 디지털인쇄의 조우니 사의 미래성의 상징이다.

한편, 공장 매스는 덩어리 자체가 크므로 사무환경의 거실임에도 불구하고 주광이 미치지 않는 곳에는 천측창을 두어 간접 주광 유입을 유도했다. 공장건축에 빛의 요소를 창호에 반영하여 주변 인쇄공장의 무미건조함에 리듬을 부여한 풍경이 창조된 하나의 사례다. 반복되는 인쇄기의 리듬에 맞춰 조형의 “리토르넬로”가 활력을 불어넣어 조우니 사옥의 사람들은 항상 경쾌하다.
