This detached house built for a young couple in Sunndal who wanted to build a small home they could afford with limited funds. At the same time, they envisioned that their family would grow and they therefore wanted the building to be easily expandable, depending on how life developed. The man wanted a romantic and cozy building while his wife, who is a deer hunter, wanted a building that was practical with room for guns and other hunting equipment. Both saw the need to think simple, especially due to economic concerns, but at the same time they wanted to think about the future so there would be no big leaps for making changes as their family changed.

The insulated part of the building has two floors, both with an area of 50 square meters. The uninsulated utility space (the outdoor space under the roof) has about twice that area. The former part responds to the need the couple has for living space today, and this area will probably be able to accommodate a family increase of one or two children. The latter part is the part that has potential for expansion. In the meantime, the veranda functions as a storage room, garage, workshop, banquet hall and not least, as space for butchering deer. The windows in the insulated section are organized in a traditional way, albeit with a somewhat larger format than usual in such buildings, while the hall/veranda has a more industrial and temporary design.

The simple economic concept is that the owners have now built the part that they could afford, while the rest has untapped potential for what life might bring. By completely extending the roof at the beginning of the project, they significantly reduce the work for adding space when needed, and they have the area under the roof as a resource in the meantime.

The floorplan of the insulated part is organized around a warm core on both floors. On the ground floor the entrance, kitchen and living room encircle the laundry room, while on the second floor the storage space, bedroom, second living room and TV room are arranged around the bathroom. The front door is facing the courtyard while the back entrance is from the hall/veranda via the laundry room.

The roof over the utility space is help up by tilted glulam columns. These are built into the wall panels, but help define the openings towards the views of the landscape. Under this roof you get an indoor/outdoor feeling – the space is both open and closed at the same time. Due to its expressive form, you also get dramatic framing of views in different directions. The utility space has a scale somewhere between housing and industrial, and the experience alternates between large and small.

Because of the simplistic design, the building appears a little abstract. The similarity between concept model and the finished building is striking. From the driveway, the building is dominated by the insulated part while the utility space disappears behind. Seen from the sides, the relationship between the two is fairly balanced – one is big and light while the other is small and heavy.

One of the most interesting things about this building is that in the future it may end up resembling a completely traditional local farm house, once all the potential area has been converted. As such, something that started as an unusual building will gradually develop to become more traditional. The only remaining traces will be the tilted glulam columns from the former hall/veranda. These will be built into the exterior walls and only appear in the window openings, in a way reminiscent of the transept chapel buttress of Gloucester Cathedral.

이 단독주택은 한정된 예산으로 감당할 수 있는 작은 집을 짓고 싶어하는 선달(Sunndal)의 젊은 부부를 위해 지어졌다. 그들은 가족의 성장을 대비해 확장이 용이한 집을 원했다. 남편은 낭만적이고 아늑한 건물을, 사냥꾼인 아내는 총이나 사냥 장비를 위해 실용성이 뛰어난 건물을 원했다. 건축주는 경제적인 면을 위해 단순한 생각을 필요로 했지만 동시에 미래에 대한 대비 또한 함께 할 수 있기를 바랐다.

건물은 단열처리가 된 2층 주택과 단열처리가 되지 않은 옥외 공간으로 나뉜다. 주택부는 50m²의 건축 면적을 가졌고 옥외부는 약 2배의 면적을 차지한다. 주택부는 부부에게 당장의 생활공간을 제공해 1~2명의 아이의 가족구성원 증가를 수용할 수 있을 것이다. 옥외부는 확장성을 위한 공간이다. 확장 이전에는 창고, 차고, 작업장, 사교모임을 위한 공간 등의 기능을 수행할 것이다.

경제성을 고려해서 건축가는 건축주에게 당장 수용가능한 공간인 주택부를 제공했고, 옥외부에 잠재력을 남겨두었다. 지붕의 확장으로 추후의 확장에 필요한 작업을 대폭 줄이고, 그 이전에는 지붕 아래의 옥외부를 활용할 수 있도록 했다.

주택부의 평면도는 난방의 코어를 중심으로 구성되어 있다. 1층에는 출입구와 주방, 거실이 세탁실을 둘러싸고 있고, 2층에는 욕실 주변에 수납공간과 침실, 제2 거실과 TV실이 배치되어 있다. 현관문은 안뜰을 향하고 뒷문은 복도와 베란다에서 세탁실을 거쳐 나올 수 있도록 배치되었다.

옥외부의 지붕은 기울어진 글루램 기둥을 따라 들어올려진다. 벽체의 패널에서 뻗어나오는 이 패널은 경관을 향해서 개구부를 뚫는데 도움이 된다. 이 지붕의 아래에서 실내와 실외의 공간이 동시에 열리고 닫히는 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 동시에 극적인 시야의 프레임을 제공한다. 옥외부는 주택과 작업 사이, 큰 규모와 작은 규모 사이 여러 방면에 걸쳐 다양한 경험을 준다.

이 주택의 가장 흥미로운 점 중 하나는 미래에 모든 잠재된 공간이 확장되면 전통적인 농가와 비슷한 모습이 될 수도 있다는 점이다. 특이한 모습의 건축물로 시작되었던 것이 확장되고 발전되는 것을 거듭하며 전통의 모습으로 찾아갈 것이다. 남게 되는 것은 옥외부의 기울어진 기둥뿐일 것이다. 이 기둥은 외벽을 감싸며 글로스터 대성당의 예배당 버팀목을 연상시키며 창문에 나타날 것이다.
