CHODANG LEATHER STUDIO

Chodang-dong in Gangneung is one of Gangneung’s hottest tourist desitinations, with its indigenous village and modern architecture coexisting and being relatively closed to the shores of the East Sea. The site where the Chodang Leather Studio is located is also an area packed with restaurants near Chodang Soft Tofu Village, so the tourist population is quite high on weekends. Most of the commercial shops on the roadside around the site have parking in front of the site, and the building is located at the rear of the site. An alternative layout was proposed in the case of the Chodang Leather Studio.

The owner, who was running a leather studio near the site, wanted to build a warm, comfortable, but solid image building to serve as both a studio and a cafe. Since the indoor scale was not very large, he wanted to actively utilize the external yard to smoothly connect with the external travel route, but also wanted a space that could be protected from outside. Therefore, in order to have a surrounded and private yard, it was necessary to divide the minimum distance to the parking space and locate the building as close as possible. To the roadside. As a result, it was placed slightly in front of the other buildings, so it became more visible. This is beneficial in terms of getting recognition, which is considered to be a very important factor in commercial buildings.

In order to enter the building and the yard, you must pass through the piloti which serves as a kind of transition space. The events held in the courtyard of the yard are slightly visible through the open view of the piloti so that it causes curiosity in people passing by. As a result, the design of the three sides of the piloti was important, but I wanted to keep it simple without overdoing it. The walls are made of brick, which is the main finishing material of the outer wall, and there is an iron plate on the other side. The upper ceiling is attached to the iron plate, and indirect lighting was added where the wall and the ceiling come together to add subtleness. The piloti can be opened or closed as needed, and the wooden hanger door installed outside was one of the important elements of the facade design. Depending on the opening and closing of the door, the facade will have a different image.

The interior consists of a cafe on the first floor and a studio on the second floor run by the owner. While looking at the first and second floors at the same time, the owner wanted the spaces of the two programs with different personalities to be able to “appropriate interference” and “appropriate communication.” To accommodate his desire, a skip floor space was planned. The line of sight and travel line are naturally connected to each other, while blurring the boundary between the first and second floor spaces. In addition, the natural light that falls by opening a part of the floor and creating a skylight on the upper part transcends the floor, allowing the vertical spaces to be connected so that the entire building is recognized as one space.

Through the exterior wall finished with brick and metal, the tough, durable, solid, yet soft, complex image of the leather studio is projected to the outside. This is what the owner wished that the building be harmonized with the surroundings of Chodang-dong and exude calm and sophistication.

초당공방

건축가의 회고 강릉의 초당동은 동해 바다 해변가와 비교적 멀리 떨어져 있지 않으면서도, 그 고유의 마을 모습과 현대적인 건축물들이 서로 공존하고 있는, 강릉의 핫한 관광지다. 초당 공방이 위치한 대지 또한 초당 순두부 마을 근처의 맛집들이 밀집된 지역으로 주말이면 관광객의 유동 인구가 꽤 높은 곳이다. 주변 가로변의 대다수 상가들은 대지의 전면을 주차 공간으로 내어주고 건물은 대지의 후면에 배치가 되어 있다. 초당공방의 경우에는 그 컨텍스트를 거스르는 배치를 대안으로 제안했다.

주변에서 가죽 공방을 운영하고 있던 건축주는 공방과 카페를 겸하고자 했고, 따뜻하면서도 안락하지만, 단단한 이미지의 건물을 원했다. 실내 규모가 그리 크지 않은 관계로 외부의 마당을 적극적으로 활용하고자 하여 외부 동선과의 연결은 원활하지만, 불특정 다수의 시선으로부터는 일정 부분 보호받을 수 있는 공간을 원하고 있었다. 그래서 위요되면서도 프라이빗한 마당을 갖기 위해서 최소한의 주차 구획을 위한 거리만 이격하고, 건축물은 최대한 도로변에 위치하도록 했다. 그러다보니 다른 건물들보다 다소 전면에 배치되면서 규모에 비해 눈에 더 띄는 건물로 인식될 수 있었다. 이는 상업적 건물에 있어서 매우 중요한 요소라고 생각하는 인지성 확보 면에서 보다 유리하다 할 수 있다.

건물 내부 및 마당에 진입하기 위해서는 건물 전면의 필로티 공간을 통해야만 하는데, 이곳은 일종의 전이공간으로서 역할을 한다. 대지 내의 마당에서 열리는 이벤트는 피로티의 오픈 시선으로 외부에 슬릿하게 보여주게 되며 궁금증을 유발한다. 그러다 보니 필로티 3면의 디자인은 중요했으며, 다만 과하지 않고 심플하게 하고자 하였다. 벽은 외벽의 주 마감재인 벽돌을, 그리고 반대편에는 철판으로 상부 천정은 다시 철판을 이어 붙여 벽과 천정이 맞닿는 부분에는 간접등을 설치하여 고급스러움을 더하고자 하였다. 필로티는 필요에 따라 개폐가 가능하도록 하였는데, 외부에 설치하게 되는 목재 행거도어 또한 입면 디자인의 중요한 요소 중 하나였다. 도어의 개폐에 따라 입면은 다른 이미지를 갖게 되는 것이다.

내부는 건축주가 운영하는 1층 카페와 2층 공방으로 이루어져 있다. 건축주는 1, 2층을 동시에 살펴보면서 다른 성격의 두 가지 프로그램이 적절한 간섭과 적당한 소통이 이뤄지기를 원했다. 이 조건을 해결하는 방법으로 스킵플로어(skip floor) 공간을 계획하였고, 시선과 동선은 서로 자연스럽게 이어지게 하면서도 1층과 2층 공간의 경계를 모호하게 하였다. 또한 바닥의 일부를 오픈하고, 상부 천창의 자연 채광은 층을 초월하는 건물 전체가 하나의 공간으로 인식되도록 수직적 공간 연결이 가능하도록 했다.

벽돌과 금속으로 마감된 외벽을 통해서 가죽공방이 가지는 질기고 단단하면서 내구성 강한, 그러면서도 부드러운, 복합적인 이미지를 외부로 투영시키고자 했다. 이는 편안하지만 세련된 인상으로 초당동의 주변과 어우러지기를 바라는 건축주의 마음과도 맞닿아 있는 점이기도 하다.
