K BUILDING

The site is located at a place where you can enjoy the distant view of Mt. Bukhansan and appreciate the nearby Eunpyeong Historical Hanok Museum and Hanok Village at a glance. You can savor the incredible beauty of nature. We tried to be open and get closer to the space to enjoy the four seasons.

In order to bring the Mt. Bukhansan view into the building, a terrace was created on every floor and added to the fun of enjoying the scenery from the inside and outside of the building. There is a different sense of space through the terrace with and without a roof, depending on the needs of the space. The first basement level consists of a wine bar (WITH), and the ground and underground spaces are connected through a sunken staircase in the front. This has created an underground area where both lighting and ventilation are possible. In addition, it is composed of spaces that are directly connected to the outside through independent entrances in consideration of different business hours. The brunch café (Long Bread) connects the first and second floors through an open space and you can view the scenery of Mt. Bukhansan from different heights through the internal stairs and panoramic balconies.

The heights of the offices on the third and fourth floors were lifted and these offices offer a view of Mt. Bukhansan through a large window. Also, there is a meeting room where staff can have tea and visit that provides a view of Mt. Bukhansan. The mass on the fifth floor was built to protrude as much as possible without pillars, creating a space closer to Mt. Bukhansan and a large balcony with a roof at the lower part created the best place to enjoy a view of mountain. The open spaces on the fifth and sixth floors are connected around the stairs, and there is a large deck and rest area on the roof, which will serve as a shelter. It is no exaggeration to say that the terraces, void space, inside and outside spaces, and the locations and required functions of every space has been made breathable because of Mt. Bukhansan and the external shapes created by these spaces make up the exterior of the building.

The architect placed the work “Mr. K runs today, too” at the canopy’s entrance of the building. This work is a collaboration with the installation artist Hyunggil Choi. The figure has an unusual proportion with a large head, blue suit, and flying red tie. He is running all over the house full of thought. This work is so sympathetic to architects who are always full of architectural thoughts, and it seems to be the image of our living in modern times. It was decided to install “Mr. K” in the K building. While building the K building with the artist Choi, he shared the installation location and concept to create a work. It was completed and installed “Mr. K” on the canopy. Then, as a new space it is a new attempt for the artist, the architect, the building, and the work.

대지는 북한산을 원경으로, 은평역사한옥박물관과 한옥마을을 근경으로 한눈에 감상할 수 있는 위치로, 산과 박물관, 마을이 어우러진 곳이다. 사계절에 따라 바뀌는 아름다운 경관을 건축물에서 맘껏 누릴 수 있도록 공간을 열어내고 가까이 다가갔다.

북한산을 건축물 안으로 들여오기 위해 건축물의 모든 층마다 테라스를 만들었고, 공간의 필요에 따라 지붕이 있고 없는 테라스를 통해 건물의 안과 밖에서 풍광을 다른 공간감으로 누릴 수 있는 재미를 더했다. 지하 1층은 와인바(WITH)로 구성되어, 전면의 선큰 계단을 통해 지상과 지하의 공간이 연결된다. 채광과 환기가 동시에 가능한 지하 공간을 만들었다. 독립된 진입공간을 통해 오픈 시간이 다른 것을 고려하고 외부에서 직접 연결되는 공간으로 구성했다. 1, 2층은 브런치 카페(LONG BREAD)로 두 층을 오픈된 공간(VOID)을 통해 연결하고, 내부 계단과 탁 트인 발코니를 통해 북한산을 층별로 다른 높이에서 바라볼 수 있도록 했다. 3, 4층의 사무실은 층고를 높이고 큰 통창을 통해 북한산과 함께하는 장소로 구성했다. 북한산을 바라보며 차 한 잔을 하며 대화할 수 있는 회의공간을 만들었다. 5층은 매스를 기둥 없이 최대한 돌출시켜 북한산 쪽으로 더 가까운 공간을 만들고 하부는 지붕이 있는 넓은 발코니를 두어 가장 좋은 위치에서 여유롭게 북한산을 즐길 수 있다. 5층과 6층의 오픈된 공간은 계단을 중심으로 연결되어 있고 옥상에 넓은 데크 및 휴게공간이 있어 쉼터의 역할을 한다. 이처럼 테라스와 보이드 공간 그리고 내부와 외부 공간을 그 위치와 요구되는 공간의 기능을 모두 조합하여 북한산과 함께하는 숨 쉬는 공간들을 만들고 이로 인해 생겨난 외부의 형태들로 건축물의 외형이 만들어졌다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

평상시 좋아하는 설치미술 작가인 최형길 작가와 협업하여 건축물의 캐노피 입구에 “Mr. K는 오늘도 달린다”라는 작품을 전시했다. 작품은 비율이 맞지 않는 큰 머리와 파란 양복, 빨간 넥타이를 휘날리며 온통 집 생각이 가득한 채로 달리고 있는 모습을 하고 있다. 늘 건축물 생각으로 가득한 건축가에게는 너무나도 공감 가는 작품이기도 하며 현대에 살아가는 우리의 모습을 보는 것 같다. 최 작가와는 설치 위치와 개념을 공유하여 건축물을 지을 때부터 작품을 만들어갔다. 건축물의 설계와 미술 작품은 공유되어야 한다. 건축물이 완성되고 입구 캐노피 위에 Mr. K를 설치한 것은 작가와 건축가에게도, 건물로도, 작품으로도 새로운 공간과 새로운 시도다.
