San No Lu, the space is containing Nature

Olle Trail Route Originally, this was not a terrain that attracted passers-by. Rather, it was a primeval forest, which refused any access. We focused on the low, endless topography, the dark red color of the site, and the trails that pass through the sunshine, wind, and land of Jeju. If you walk along Jeju Olle Trail Route 13, you will meet the three red brick buildings of Sannolu at the mouth of Hangyeong-myeon.

Green Tea Jeju is one of the world’s three largest green tea producers. Sannolu develops and promotes Korean high-quality green tea culture through the manufacture, processing, and selling of tea produced in Jeju tea fields. The design focuses on the fundamental values through plain and simple architectural language that mixes and reveals the environmental context as a place of production and the handicraft work process that is consistent from the beginning to the end of the tea-making process. The dark red earth and brick shining in the bright sunshine create a complementary contrast with the colors of the green tea, and we tried to emphasize the material (of tea) itself rather than the language (of construction). The basaltic rock fences of Jeju, built with gaps, are intended to open the way for easy passage of wind rather than blocking it. Because of the unpredictable direction of rain or wind, things do not always go as planned in Jeju daily life, not even simple outdoor activities.

Wind We proposed a pinwheel-shaped space, an outside space surrounded by three building masses. The empty central space utilizes the advantage of being located in the middle of a flat natural terrain to allow natural light all day long. As a halting space, that is a mediating space for private spaces and public spaces for research experiments; it is enclosed while being the center of the facility open in all directions.
