Little Shelter is located in Chiang Mai where its old cityscape and vernacular architecture are characterized by wood structure with shingle pitched roof. The hotel roof form inspired by traditional hip roofs as homage to the local architecture has a little reinterpretation with an asymmetrical form blending naturally with the surrounding tree top silhouette. The wood shingles are used on the roof and side walls. On the river facade, polycarbonate sheets are cut into the same size as wood shingles and constructed to become the architectural translucent facade. On the entrance facade, the upper portion is composed of solid wood shingles and they trickle down to mixed with polycarbonate shingles on the lower part. Although working with the traditional shingle system, the uninterrupted translucency surface is achieved by a special detail design using translucent studs and special transparent screws.
The design has explored a possibility to fuse new materials into a system to create a contemporary architectural surface yet deeply rooted in tradition. The facade is glittering in the sun as the light touches different materials, from the solid wood shingles to the different translucency levels of the polycarbonate shingles. The public area interior complements the exterior simplicity, gives a gallery-like feeling that accommodates the site-specific installations inspired by the famous Boh–Srang umbrella, and creates delicate and dramatic silhouettes expressing contemporary interpretation of the local handicraft.
Different image of important places of Chiang Mai are placed on each guestroom ceiling infinitely reflected onto the two long walls cladded with small mirror shingles, giving a surreal borderless sensation.
리틀 셸터 호텔
리틀 셸터(작은 안식처)는 오래된 도시 풍경과 목구조, 경사진 지붕 널의 주택 양식이 특징적인 치앙마이(Chiang Mai)에 있다. 현지 건축에 대한 오마주로서 전통적인 지붕 형태에서 영감을 받은 호텔의 지붕 형태는 비대칭적인 형태로써 부분적으로 재해석되어 주위의 나무 꼭대기 실루엣과 자연스럽게 어우러진다. 목재 지붕 널은 지붕과 측면 벽에 사용되었다. 강을 마주하고 있는 면은 건축적으로 반투명한 입면을 실현하기 위해 폴리카보네이트 판을 목재 지붕 널과 동일한 크기로 잘라 시공하였다. 입구의 상단부는 온전한 목재 지붕 널로 이루어져 있으며, 폴리카보네이트 지붕널과 하단부에서 혼합되어 흘러내린다. 전통적인 지붕 널 체계를 사용했음에도 불구하고, 끊기지 않는 반투명 표면은 반투명 스터드와 투명 나사를 사용한 특수한 디테일 설계에 의해 가능했다.
디자인은 전통에 깊이 뿌리 박혀 있으면서도 현대적인 표면을 만들기 위해 새로운 재료들을 시스템에 융합시킬 수 있는 가능성을 탐구했다. 빛이 순수한 목재 지붕 널부터 서로 다른 반투명 폴리카보네이트 지붕널까지 여러 소재에 닿을 때마다 입면은 햇빛에 반짝인다. 공공 공간의 인테리어는 유명한 보-스랑 우산에 영감을 받아 갤러리와 같은 느낌을 주면서 현지 수공예 작품에 대한 현대적인 해석을 보여주는 정교하고 극적인 실루엣을 조성하여 외부의 단순성을 보완한다.
치앙마이의 주요 장소들에 대한 여러 이미지는 각 객실의 천장에 수놓아져 작은 거울로 덮인 두 개의 긴 벽들로 무한히 반사되며 경계가 없는 듯한 비현실적인 느낌을 준다.
