CEDAR HOUSE, PAJU

This house was made with cedar: gigantic cylinder clad with cedar veneer interior and envelope surface clad with cedar shake exterior. The cylinder space is a private gallery in which one of the greatest transcendental artwork [Indala] by Atta Kim. The gallery can be opened or closed occasionally to both sides. Dining direction is through the large opening with folding door and Living room direction is through window type. When closed, the inner space of the gallery is tranquil only lit by the ambient natural light filtered by 1m deep cedar grid louver. When opened, the 1st floor changed to the space having no partitions physically. Cedar cladding is not painted so that you can feel the delicate scent of cedar even if it will last just one or two years. The cedar shake outdoor is not painted either in order to make its color changing slowly.

Complex inner space comes not only from the unusual program as a house but also from the slope of adjacent road. From the entry level half story above the ground to the attic level, floor slabs moves into 7 different height. The alcove space next to the living room is in between these slabs. Although both the design and construction team fully recognized that large span, several voids, curves on plan, and corner openings were extreme challenge, the structure is lumber framing.

파주 삼나무집

삼나무집이라는 이름은 이 집의 한 가운데를 삼나무로 마감한 거대한 실린더가 관통하고 있어서다. 예술애호가인 건축주가 소장한 김아타 선생의 사진작품 인달라가 위치할 갤러리 공간이다.

주방과 거실 사이에 독립적으로 놓여 있는 갤러리 공간은 양쪽으로 개방할 수 있는데, 주방쪽으로는 문, 거실쪽으로는 창의 형식으로 되어 있어 좌우등가는 아니다. 닫았을 때 갤러리 내부는 1m 춤을 갖는 삼나무 격자 루버를 통과한 은은한 산란광만으로 채광이 이루어지는 고요한 공간이 된다. 열어 놓으면 1층은 전체가 격벽 없이 물리적으로 이어진 하나의 공간으로 바뀐다. 삼나무 마감 위에는 도료를 칠하지 않아 비록 한두 해만으로 그칠 일일지라도 나무향이 집안에 은은하게 퍼지길 기대했다. 외장재 역시 삼나무 널판으로, 따로 도료를 칠하지 않아 자연스럽게 세월이 지남에 따라 변해가도록 하였다.

주택으로는 이례적인 갤러리 공간과 더불어 인접도로의 경사가 만들어내는 대지조건 역시 복잡한 내부공간을 있게 한 출발점이었다. 주차장과 같은 높이에서 시작하는 지하 AV룸부터 다락에 이르기까지 내부공간의 바닥면은 모두 일곱 개의 서로 다른 높이로 나뉘어 있고, 이로써 거실 옆의 평상과 같은 색다른 공간들이 만들어졌다. 큰 규모나 복잡한 공간, 넓은 경간, 코너를 여는 커다란 창 등과는 그다지 어울리지 않을뿐더러 꽤 용감한 도전이었던 바, 이 집의 구조는 경골목구조다.
