Besides the general fact that the house is in itself introvert, the name ‘Endogenic’ means that this house was generated from inside. In formal point of view, the house consisted of two elements: the one is robust brick wall outside and the other is floating masses containing programs inside.

The client had a clear image about his own house. It is a kind of castle in which his personal dedication .i.e. music and books are stuffed in very special and intimate way. Without the freedom he endowed during the design period, exceptionally thick and hallow wall surrounding the suspended masses and complex non orthogonal plan was impossible. The 1st floor is relatively public. For the large and open space, small functional units such as washroom or storage were put into the peripheral thick wall. As a result, there is no partition or structural elements interrupting the spatial continuity. Instead of party walls, it is the variation of floor levels and ceiling height that articulates the functional territories.

The raison d’etre of lines going off the orthogonal grid is not formal but functional. Close observation of behavior and circulation of people reveals that orthogonal geometry is not so efficient to make human space as we believe in. Opposite from the introvert character of the envelope, the rooms inside have windows to the common space. They provide varying visual connections among them.

대전 내생주택

집이란 것이 본래 내향성이지만, 이 집의 이름 내생(內生)은 그 생성이 특별히 내부로부터 시작됐음을 뜻한다. 건축주는 처음부터 명확한 집의 이미지를 가지고 있었다. 책과 음악이라는 몰아의 대상을 집 안 깊숙이 채워 넣은 성채같은 집이었다. 그리고 내생의 구현으로 귀결된 공간을 품은 두터운 벽체와 그 안의 정형을 깬 평면은 일반적인 경우보다 훨씬 더 큰 재량과 자유를 부여받았던 작업의 조건에서 비롯됐다.

상대적으로 공적이라 할 수 있는 1층을 최대한의 크기로 열기 위해 물리적 분할을 요하는 방들은 모두 외주부의 두터운 벽체 속으로 밀어넣고, 평면 중심부에는 구조체나 벽체가 존재하지 않도록 했다. 1층에서 기능적인 영역의 분할은 벽이 아니라 바닥면과 천장면의 높이차가 만들어낸다.

평면을 이루는 부정형의 선들은 그 자체의 형상이 아니라 기능단위가 필요로 하는 치수, 그리고 동선을 수용하기 위한 변형에서 비롯된 것이다. 직교의 기하는 사람의 움직임과 밀접하게 부딪치게 되는 거주 공간에서 생각 외로 비효율적이다. 시공의 경제성을 제외하고는 거의 모든 다른 요구조건들에 대해 공간적으로는 비경제적이기 때문이다.

1층과 전혀 다르게 기능 단위들이 빛이 떨어지는 보이드를 사이에 두고 매달려 있는 2층의 사적 공간들은 모두 닫힌 공간들이다. 주계단의 첫 단 챌판을 없애서 1층 바닥과 계단을 분리한 것은 이종의 공간 사이를 나누는 인지상의 경계다. 전체 집이 외부를 향해 가능한 한 닫혀 있는 것과는 달리 내부 벽면들에는 창이 많아 집 안의 공간들 사이에서는 시각적인 연결이 다양해지도록 했다. 방들을 지나 도달하는 동선의 종착점에 천장 전체가 천창인 압도적인 공간감의 서재와 오디오룸이 있다.
