It is the reconstruction project for the house of the client’s mother. She had lived in a shabby cottage which belonged to the large field of her own farmland. The original house was more than 70 years old. At the first visit to the site, I recognized that the most important is duration of her life. In spite of the inconvenience and inadequacy of the old house, abrupt replacement of familiar environment would harm to her emotional comfort. The spatial program of the new house is actually the same with old one. Small courtyard which can be a workspace, covered outdoor space with water supply, and two storage for corps all correspond with the old house.

Different from the continuity of outdoor spaces, I tried to draw the interior plan on the blank paper just conveying the basic principle of function and coziness. Dining and kitchen is separated from the living in order to achieve the functional completion of living room; bedroom has several windows with different size and height from each other for a traditional lifestyle. On occasion of family gathering at weekend or annual holidays, the additional space such as attic can be a guest room. Client who has visited his mother every weekend loves books, so there is a large bookshelf on the wall of the living room and attic. Large bay window in attic catches the great scenery of Palbong mountain.

서산 농가서택

일제 강점기부터 존재하던 농촌의 구옥을 철거하고 같은 자리에 새로 지은 어머니를 위한 집이다. 자녀들을 서울로 내보낸 채 홀로 남은 노모의 시골생활에서 가장 우선적으로 고려했던 점은 평생에 걸쳐 같은 방식으로 이어져 온 그 삶의 지속성을 새집이 침해하지 않았으면 하는 것이었다. 이는 곧 노동과 가사가 혼재한 농촌의 삶을 그대로 공간으로 치환해 놓은 듯한 구옥의 기능적 분할이 새집에서도 지속되어야 함을 뜻했다. 새로 마련한 집을 이루는 부분들이 본래 있던 집의 그것과 거의 직설적으로 일대일 대응을 이루고 있는 이유다. 물을 쓸 수 있는 집안의 마당과 창고, 집 밖에 있는 더 넓은 마당 겸 일터에서 모두 접근할 수 있는 또 다른 두 개의 창고들이 대표적이다.

외부공간이 구옥의 구성을 그대로 가져온 것과 달리 내부는 기능과 안락함이라는 기본 조건에 최대한 충실하려 했다. 혼자 식사하는 일상을 생각해 주방과 식탁 자리를 거실과 적당히 분리하고, 안방은 다양한 높이로 창을 두어 좌식 생활에 대응하였으며, 주말이나 명절과 같이 외지의 가족들이 모이는 경우를 생각하여 건넌방과 다락의 형태로 여유 공간들을 배치했다. 주말에 모친을 방문하는 아들 내외는 책 읽고 공부하는 것을 즐겨하므로, 농가이면서도 집 안에 많은 책을 두고 편히 읽을 수 있도록 거실로부터 다락으로 이어지는 복층 부분을 서가로 가득한 장소로 만들었다. 책장이 이어져 있는 다락에는 인근의 팔봉산 절경이 한눈에 들어오는 큰 창을 두었다.
