The inspiration for the design came from the staple of British vernacular postwar architecture - the ‘Formica caffs’, which first appeared in London’s West End in the 1950s, several of them surviving intact to this day. Typically established by Italian immigrant families, those coffee bars served simple snacks and drinks in a pared-back modernist setting featuring laminate surfaces, pastel colors and cosy seating nooks and crannies. This was the beginning of the ‘cafe culture’ in London with King’s Road, attracting writers, musicians, photographers and bohemian characters of all styles.

The interior is clad in wall-to-wall pink Formica which continues along counter fronts and across tables tops. The rhythmic pattern is highlighted with cherry wood framing each laminate panel. The designers worked with Formica factory to recreate the original ‘linen’ pattern design popular in the 1970s, opting for a suitably ‘Millennial pink’ shade. “We have long been attracted to the cinematic quality of London’s ‘Formica cafes’, the duality of Modernist design language and the playful, almost cartoonish spirit. This project aims to create a contemporary version of this unique typology” - commented Chieh Huang and Alexey Kostikov, the founders of Child Studio. The restaurant sits behind a characterful period timber shopfront. The facade was stripped back from the later additions to reveal the original features, including the ornate cast iron grilles. The long and narrow floor plan informed the layout with a long banquette seat flanking one side and a 5.5m display counter located along the opposite wall. An Illuminated cherry-clad light box frames the ‘open kitchen’ counter towards the rear of the space, creating a cinematic focal point whilst offering a glimpse behind the scenes and celebrating the food making process focused on plant-based ingredients.

디자인의 영감은 1950년대 런던 웨스트엔드(West End)에 처음 등장한‘ 포르미카 카페(Formica caffs)’라는 건축 양식에서 비롯되었다. 영국의 세계2차 대전 이후의 건축 양식인 포르미카 카페는 그 중 일부가 현재까지 남아있다. 이 카페는 라미네이트 표면, 파스텔 톤의 아늑한 좌석으로 현대적인 분위기를 이루고 있으며, 간단한 스낵과 음료를 제공했다. 런던의 중심지인 킹스로드(King’s Road)와 함께‘ 카페 문화’가 시작된 이곳은 모든 스타일의 작가, 음악가, 사진가 및 보헤미안 캐릭터를 끌어 들였다.

내부는 카운터 앞면을 따라 테이블을 가로지르는 벽까지 분홍색의 포르미카(Formica)로 덮여 있다. 리듬 패턴은 각 판넬을 체리 우드 프레임으로 강조했다. 디자이너는 포르미카 공장과 협력하여 적절하게 ‘밀레니엄 핑크’ 색조를 선택하고 1970년대에 인기있었던 ‘린넨’ 패턴 디자인을 재현했다. “우리는 오랫동안 런던의 ‘포르미카 카페’의 영화예술적 질, 현대적인 디자인 언어의 이중성, 장난스럽고 만화에 가까운 정신에 매료되어 왔다. 이 프로젝트는 독특한 유형학의 현대적 버전을 만드는 것을 목표로 했다.”고 차일드 스튜디오의 치 후앙과 알렉시 코스티코브는 전했다. 이 레스토랑은 개성 있는 목재 매장과 마주하고 있다. 그래서 정면은 화려하게 장식된 주철 그릴을 포함하면서 본래 특징을 드러내기 위해 추가 장식물을 두었다. 길고 좁은 평면으로 한쪽 측면에 긴 좌석과 반대쪽 벽에 5.5m 길이의 디스플레이 카운터를 배치했다. 체리우드로 장식된 조명 박스는 공간의 뒤쪽을 향해‘ 열린 주방’을 비춘다. 이것은 배경을 한 눈에 볼 수 있게 해주고 음식을 만드는 과정을 영화 같은 장면으로 만든다.
