The work of the owner, which is made of iron, is intense yet delicate. Most works are exhibited with white walls as their background, and the shadow of the work that is casted on that wall becomes a planar layer and creates another piece of work. The iron sculptures connect and form a large circle and a sphere, or sometimes they become bushes of a windy field or trees. It seems like iron, which has a rough and selfish image, is talking about nature and humankind, as well as the eternity of relationships. We wondered what his gallery, which holds these works, should be like.

The expectations and thoughts of the sculptor on the gallery were as rich and diverse as his work. Since the site is located at a wide-open area, the obsession that something extraordinary needed to be created became stronger. In a situation where being under strain seems inevitable, we thought that we should create something impassive and flexible. Even though it is the background, we thought that a building that would make the presence of the object stand out was necessary. We had an impression that if this was possible, it could become something special even if it wasn’t special. We thought that a gallery that is impassive yet cozy, and therefore easily harmonizes with the works of art was needed.

First, the linear and decorative elements are excluded. We thought that it would be good if it was expressed just as a three-dimensional lump, where it seems like three heavy lumps of rocks are stacked. A long cantilever space is required, the windows need to be as deep as possible, and the windowless sides should be wide. The windows should be placed between the gaps of masses since they need to be used as elements that separate the masses. Windows must become sides rather than another opening. We would like the appearances of the four-sides to look all different through the threedimensional fusion between the masses.

We also would like for a small pond that reflects the building, and floating plates to stand on and admire the works. These wishes became sketches, arrangements and were made as a model. It should not be light, but it should also not be too reverent. We would rather have it be trustworthy like a rock that is always there. Initially, exposed concrete or bricks were the dominant external material. However, as the budget problem emerged gravely as always, stucco was chosen. If it were exposed concrete or bricks, the impression of the building would have been much heavier, more intense and monumental than it is now.

Since the three masses overlap three-dimensionally, the sides meet naturally as if by coincidence and large frames are formed. The texture and shape of these forms are well-shown through the light. As the personality of the light peculiarly changes, it creates more natural and abundant senses of color. Admiring these colors while moving around every corner of the building, is a small pleasure felt by only those who know. Sometimes, rather than the precisely intended aspects, the unexpected and accidentally created spaces and elements give unanticipated small gifts because specific functions and roles were not granted.
