Alley House, a multi-family housing and neighborhood living facility project, is located in an area where multiplex houses and neighborhood living facilities are congested. In the process of Seoul’s rapid urbanization, nature has often been pushed out of priority and neglected, and the phenomenon of nature negligence is particularly extreme in the area of concentrated neighborhoods where various desires are all mixed in one place.

The area, with the scale of a land where the legal landscape area isn’t even applied, forms a city structure where only the legal minimum space between buildings are maintained. When closely observed, one can see while walking around this town that green life is growing in the corner of the gaps between buildings in each alley even in barren places untouched by architects or the public.

The scenery of the natural pattern, which is created by the truly spontaneous greening and the resident’s desire for greenness, is growing in between gaps of the desolate environment in their own way. The Alley House project provides a crevice for relaxation and nature in the margins of the buildings and communal spaces based on the observation of the spontaneously appearing natural greening in the alley.

While overcoming the existing local limitations, an alternative was placed to encounter nature, though plainly, in the neighborhood living facilities as much as possible in everyday life with the concerns about the living environment of the area where neighborhoods are dense. The facade that faces the main access alley, which is entered by turning from the 8-meter roadside, acts as a new face of the building.

The main access side, formed with red and blue old bricks and Living Bricks, forms a space of vegetation by the depth and gaps created while drawing a slight diagonal line towards the 8-meter road. The vegetation spaces along the depth of the surface and the alley are reclaimed as the facade and landscape of the privatized area as well as a communal environment that enlivens the alley.

The main access alley is vertically connected to the inside of the building through the open exterior stairways created in the gaps between studios. This staircase acts as not only a mode of transportation but as a small park for the people who live in desolate conditions called studios.

A space where vegetation can grow is secured in the niche spaces, which were formed by adjusting the width of the stairs and stair landings, and a communal space where people can rest is created.

This approach, which was suggested based on the spontaneous vegetation patterns created without an architect, presents a possible alternative from the stairs of the desolate conditions.

Through this, the previously dark and inconveniently accessed alley becomes an alley that welcomes the approach of people and becomes a part of the more improved city structure.
