인도 케랄라의 조용한 길가에 자리잡은 두 번째 집(The Second Home)이 있다. "열대의 눈에 띄지않는" 브루탈리즘을 떠올리도록 고안된 스튜디오다. 팀은 사무실이 아니라 우리가 일하고, 공유하고, 협력하고, 성장하는 시간을 보내는 "제2의 집"이 되는 것이라는 핵심에 매우 일찍 동의했다.
디자인 팀은 공간의 잠재력을 극대화하기 위해 다양한 레이아웃 옵션을 탐색했으며, 궁극적으로 상호 작용과 협업을 장려하는 오픈 플랜 배열에 정착했다. 스튜디오는 일과 개인의 삶이 현대적으로 혼합된 모습을 반영하여 일과 사회의 영역으로 구분된다. 아뜰리에 공간의 역동적인 특징인 타공판 벽은 지속적인 변화와 적응을 촉진한다. 이 레이아웃은 또한 지속적인 성장에 대한 스튜디오의 철학과 일치하면서 여러 학문 분야의 학습을 촉진했다.
재료들은 지속가능성과 쓰레기 관리에 초점을 두고 이러한 미적 특질을 반영하기 위해 사려 깊게 선별되었다. 시멘트 콘크리트, 고밀도 섬유판, 그리고 연강봉은 그들의 다용도성, 내구성, 그리고 환경적인 이점들로 선택되었다. HDF로 만들어진 샘플 보관 보드는 지속 가능한 디자인에 대한 스튜디오의 헌신을 나타내는 중심적인 특징이다. 스튜디오의 혁신, 영감, 영향의 기질을 구현하는 역동적이고 촉각적인 중심축 역할을 한다. 100여 종의 열대 식물 화분을 창의적으로 통합함으로써 구성원들의 웰빙을 증진시킬 뿐만 아니라 사생활 보호, 분위기 개선, 공기의 질 및 자연적인 소리 흡수에도 기여한다. 스튜디오에는 시멘트 산화 마감이 된 독특한 240cm x 120cm 크기의 페로시멘트 테이블이 특징으로 있어 협업을 촉진하면서도 개인 작업 공간도 가능하다. 자연 환기 및 공기 정화 식물을 활용해 에어컨 사용을 최소화해 에너지 소비를 대폭 줄였다.
WOA 두번째 집은 현대 작업 공간에서 지속 가능하고 혁신적인 디자인의 증거로 서 있다. 자연의 통합, 재료의 신중한 사용, 동적인 디자인 요소들은 시각적으로 자극적이면서도 기능적으로 우수한 환경을 만들어낸다. 환경을 의식한 디자인의 모델로 작용하여 맥락적으로 관련성이 있고 지역적으로 공명하는 지속 가능한 건축 관행에 대한 보다 폭넓은 논의를 자극한다.
Tucked away in a quiet side street in Kerala, India, is The Second home. Designed to evoke “tropical low-key” Brutalism, the studio space embraces an open plan. The team agreed very early on that the key was to not be an office but a “second home” where we spent our time — working, sharing, collaborating, growing.
The design team explored various layout options to maximize the potential of the space, ultimately settling on an open-plan arrangement that encouraged interactions and collaboration. The studio is divided into work and social zones, reflecting the modern blend of work and personal life. The peg board wall, a dynamic feature in the atelier space, facilitates constant change and adaptation. This layout also facilitated cross-disciplinary learning, aligning with the studio's philosophy of continuous growth.
Materials were thoughtfully curated to reflect this aesthetic, with a focus on sustainability and waste management. Cement concrete, High-Density Fibreboard, and mild steel rods were selected for their versatility, durability, and environmental benefits. The sample storage board, made from HDF, is a central feature representing the studio's commitment to sustainable design. It serves as a dynamic, tactile centerpiece, embodying the studio's ethos of innovation, inspiration, and impact. The studio's approach to materials, like using HDF for tabletops and showcasing its inherent beauty, emphasizes sustainability and waste reduction. This creative integration of over 100 potted tropical local plant species not only enhances the well-being of the members but also contributes to privacy, mood elevation, air quality, and natural sound absorption. The studio features unique 240 cm by 120 cm ferrocement tables with a cement oxide finish, promoting collaboration while allowing private workspaces. The design minimizes the use of air conditioning by leveraging natural ventilation and air-purifying plants, significantly reducing energy consumption.
WOA Second Home stands as a testament to sustainable, innovative design in the modern workspace. Its integration of nature, thoughtful use of materials, and dynamic design elements create an environment that is both visually stimulating and functionally superior. It serves as a model to eco-conscious design, stimulating broader discussions on sustainable architectural practices that are contextually relevant and locally resonant.
